The purses for Australian tournaments, for both men and women, are surprisingly low for a country with a proud golf tradition. The purse for this tournament is $1,300,000 Australian dollars, not even US$1,000,000.00.
I don't know whether Australia has strange tax rules like in the UK, that players need to pay huge taxes independent of nationality.
It's a shame, because tournaments are held at world class courses that normally inspire good golf.

Nice job of finding the field, currently at 143...it's buried in the tournament's Aussie website and lpga.com doesn't have it yet. Next Tuesday's qualifier will select three more players...the ALPG will select nine more players...and there's one sponsor exemption left (Shin Ae Ahn is working out a few hundred miles NE of Adelaide, but I'm not holding my breath).
We shouldn't be too surprised about the absentees...the top players will get a bigger payout against smaller fields in Thailand and Singapore. Here's some more MIA history, courtesy of HF's website: For the 2005 BMO Financial Group Canadian Women's Open in Halifax, 28 of the top 30 players on the money list skipped it! Meena Lee went in as the top money player in the field and picked up her first win. Meena hit the skids last year, but she feels rich enough to skip Australia, too.

There are some great courses on the east coast of Canada...especially the new one built by the owner of Bandon....Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs....but many of these courses have no population to pull from....playing the 2005 BMO in Halifax was a mistake. The only cities the CWO should be played at s/b....Van City, Edmonton, Calgary (Alberta is hurting now with the price of oil....I wonder if this will affect attendance) and Toronto...especially if they can get St. George, Hamilton G&CC and Glen Abbey into the rotation.....the attendance in Montreal in 2009 was supposedly lame.

The Aussies are the only ones to blame...get some corporations to shell out a purse worthy of attending....maybe make it a limited field event too. The only thing they got right is playing the event on some great tracks as you noted.

3putt, Speaking of Van City I once played University at UBC. I thought it was pretty good for a school course but this was a long time ago. Just curious what the, say, 3 best courses are in Van so I can check them out on google maps.

Don UGC is not a 'school course' per se...it's privately owned and sits on leased Indian land. Yes...it's a pretty good course...but I play the other muni's in town for better value. I'm from the Toronto area.....but Van City is golf heaven....there are 9 full sized and 7 are really good courses.....only 30 minutes or less from downtown......all reasonably priced. I play closer to the city in the winter when we have reduced fees...but head out to the suburbs in the summer for cheaper golf. Two of the prettier in-town courses include Northlands (10 minutes from me...more of a tricked up course and only good in July/Aug...I don't play this course much) and Fraserview (I just played this yesterday and Burnaby Mountain on Tues). Three great private tracks include....Capilano (a bunch of racist WASP's), Shaughnessy, and Point Grey. In the summer, out in the suburbs in....I often play Swaneset....2 really tough 18's...and some good twilight rates....some of Happy Gilmore was filmed there along with other courses too....it has a HUGE stone clubhouse....lots of Koreans play there...heck...Koreans are everywhere here in Asia Central....I'm surprised kimchi isn't served at the half way hut at all the courses. Muni "Lily" He used to play there.....here she is as a 12 yr old at Swaneset...but seems like Muni is not that bright...her fav golfer is The Pink Diva???...I guess she has never met the phoney in real life. Looks like Muni was sporting R11 irons....I love those irons although I never owned them...Recari used them for a long time....looks like a R11 driver too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP4uwIVbo3oGo to all the course websites for pics too. I don't know if you've been to San Fran...seems like a rip off for public golf. I attended a corporate President's Club in Aug 2008 and played Harding Park (meh) twice and Presidio....IMO....both a scam...lol....especially for non-residents....luckily...I didn't put my hand in my pocket for the fees.....but you should have seen my taxable benefit for the trip...ouch. We don't charge an increased green fee for non-residents at our muni's...unlike you Yanks.....especially at the top tier Merican muni's. But I have played quite a few Merican hidden gem muni's where there were no surcharges.

That's interesting about University course. It's probably been 15 years. I've spent a lot of time in Van over the years (wife UBC) but never played much golf. The last time we were there we went to Courtenay. Any city you can ski and golf in the same day is alright by me. (And I'd never ski, it's just nice having the mountains to look at.) The munis you mention look pretty damn good! The best thing about Van is how late it stays light outside in the summer. It's not quite like Scotland in that respect but pretty close.

Yup...we have 3 local ski hills....only 15 mins each from where I live....so I can ski, golf, play tennis, bike, sail (no I don't have a boat) all in the same day...lol One of my best friends lives in Whistler...I have skied and golf in the same day there in the 3rd week in May...years ago. Yes....Mt. Washington is near Courtenay/Comox and there are some nice courses there too.....this area for golf is in a bit of a rain shadow....for drier winter conditions....it's a bit of a retirement community. Yes....I've can play till 945pm in June/July....I have played golf in Edmonton till 1045pm. My friend worked in Nunuvat for 2 months decades ago....he found it odd to leave a bar at 1am and find children playing in the playgrounds in the daylight....lol. I take looking at mountains and water for granted.

Dang, Swaneset looks cool, too. Great location. You'd have to try pretty hard to mess up a golf course in that setting. I was recently reading something from the Votaw Era, the 5 points of celebrity! Actually, just after that when Paula and Natalie came on the tour. In the comments it's crazy how gaga everybody was for Paula. I can understand it then when she was a fun rookie. Why they roll her on TV when she's 7 over now though is beyond me. Must be the aviator sunglasses. Anyway, love Van and BC. Best city in North America. US should take it over.
I guess technically we're still in the Votaw Era. Chief Marketing Officer.

I saw Votaw following Sophie at the 2008 Safeway Classic.....his conflict of interest with SG bode well for him career wise to jump to the PGA tour. Van City is great in the summer...buy really s_cks when it's raining in the winter....though I did play again today in 55*F weather...it was suppose to rain all day and was unexpectedly sunny too.....and a friend twisted my arm to play....lol.

Ya...many top names bailed....but the tour has come a long way in just a few short years. Of the 151 players...only eight I'd watch...yet at the CP CWO...I never really watched any of my fav's....spent most of my time watching players I'd never seen previously.
