I still can't see the justification for removing the Korean qualifier but keeping the Japanese one. I don't know the five who made it through in Japan, but are any of them top 200? The complaint was that big names were not going to the Korean qualifier, but does the Japanese one generate a bunch of uber-qualified qualifiers?

Iwai (center) and Mikashima (far right) are proven winners and money makers within the last five years ... let's say the other three have speculative futures (although Sato finished in 2nd last week).

I looked over the qualifier field in Japan ... 112 players completed thirty-six holes and 39 of them were amateurs (about 35%). The old Korean qualifier was around 90% amateur. As for the pros who participated, the bulk of them were unknown to me, probably a lot of scrubs from the Step Up tour. There were ten WDs and one DNF, so this venue with 36 holes could have handled more than 123 players. What stopped Iron Cho from jumping the puddle to compete here? She jumped oceans to reach the KSA this year. The KGA sent players to ANWA, but sending one or two to Japan was too much trouble, I guess.

OK, but why should they have to go somewhere else to qualify? How many Korean players have won this event from outside the LPGA in the past few years? A Lim, In Gee, So Yeon, with Sung Hyun and Hye Jin both almost winning as well. I think if you want to have the best field, how can you not have a qualifier in the place where the most contenders come from?
Just for kicks, I looked the Japanese qualifier up. Here are their rankings.

Not terrible, but here's what we got last year for Korea:
Alicia Joo -6
Jeonghyun Lee -5
Minsol Kim -4
Youmin Hwang -4
They were all amateurs at the time, but we are talking at least two bonified top notch amateur stars in Hwang and Min Sol Kim, and Jeonghyun Lee is on that path but is younger.
Actually, seeing that it was these four has made me even sadder. I was expecting at least a few journeymen types as the qualifiers, not amateurs of this caliber.
