champs.usga.org/EntryForms/girls_junior_2016.pdfThis one runs the week of July 18-23, 2016 at Ridgewood CC in Paramus, NJ. They have three nine-hole courses there and parts of all three will make up the 18 holes in play. Qualifying will be completed later this week (details in the link above)...for all the good that will do; the successful qualifiers will get massacred by the exempt players. This one's a hike for me, but I might get up there for a day; never been there before. I'm much more interested in the US Womens' Amateur two weeks later in PA, which has me working on a golf road trip plan. Defending champ Eun Jeong Seong

How far is the Jr. and the Am for you?

Seong is better this year than she was last year; she's coming off a runner-up finish last week at the KLPGA's BC Card (and she probably should have won, had she not completely botched the final hole). She had another second place finish last year as well.
I wonder if anyone in this field can stand up to her?

How far is the Jr. and the Am for you? The Girls' Junior is about 50 miles, mostly on the GSP, which means getting up really early to avoid traffic jams. Not sure about my schedule that week...kinda blah about this one when I know I'll see a much better field two weeks later. Don't know about the miles regarding the Womens' Amateur and don't care. Ideally, I want to do a loop completely around Philadelphia and Camden...play golf on Tuesday, see the Am on Wednesday, watch the morning Am matches on Thursday, then play golf Thursday afternoon. No concrete plans yet, but I'm sad to report this is not $30/night territory.

No, I'm not talking about wishful thinking, I mean really, can anyone beat her?

A: Muni He, who is playing in the Rolex Tournament of Champions (AJGA) in Georgia this week. No, I'm not talking about wishful thinking, I mean really, can anyone beat her? All the "name" amateurs appear to be overage for this one...O'Sullivan, Brooks, Gillman, Galdiano... but not HYE JIN CHOI.Choi just shows up all over the place and excels. At the 2016 RACV Masters, she outplayed Seong in the qualifier (62 to 65) and whipped her in the tournament (284 to 296). WAGR has her at #17...she's probably a lot better than that! BTW, Muni He made the cut at this week's AJGA Rolex TOC, but will have to go low to get a top-ten. She was the first-round leader at last month's AJGA Thunderbird in Arizona, but faded to T-7. She received some coverage from the AJGA news hawks (0:23 thru 1:46):

I actually consider Hye Jin Choi to be the better of the two, at least right now. And she's won some big hardware, too. So yeah, she's definitely someone who could take her down. Looking forward to this!

Seong's advantage is length...especially in the Am ranks....and unless one has an overall game, distance isn't as great an advantage on the LPGA. I think Choi's younger too...so she has time to even further develop her game.

I don't think Golf Channel showed it last year, just the men junior.

Lucy Li is still around and won her qualifier with a 67 at Merced Golf & CC, which was the lowest score among all 37 qualifiers played around the U.S. She was recently successful in qualifying for the U.S. Women's Amateur.

67 at Lake Merced is crazy good...never mind for a 13 yr old girl.
I wonder when she was attending The Swinging Skirts this year if Stacy told her again she doesn't belong and took away her ice cream cone and told her to grow up.

The first 78 players are out of the gate for the two-day medal qualifying. EJ Seong is -2 thru 10, Muni He is E thru 14, and Lucy Li is E thru 11. Hye Jin Choi tees off in the afternoon. The top-64 scores make it to match play rounds on Wednesday and I can't see how any of the players I just mentioned can miss that. As of now, my plan is to hit the Wednesday matches, then maybe play some twilight golf in the area later. Jenny from the ROK won it in 2006: www.usga.org/videos/2016/07/17/160714-jenny-shin-girls-jr-first-person-mp4-5039090779001.html
