No question that distance does have it's advantages.
IMO.....when the LPGA is mandated to assist with course set up...I don't think they set it up necessarily in favor of the bombers. If they did....the courses would be set-up and played at 6700-6800 yards.
Typically courses at 6700-6800 yards....one would generally find a few par 4's at 440-460 yards and at least a couple of par 3's at 195-215 yards. The bombers wouldn't have much issue with these lengths...but it would put a lot of strain for the average/shorter hitters.
Although we do see LPGA events with 'posted' yardages at 6300-6600 yards.....they very seldom...if never...... play to the posted yardages. These are typically the 'blue' tee blocks. Yet we rarely see the LPGA pros playing a par 3 at say....210 yards.....and about 50% of 'blue' tees......have a par 3....195+ yards.
So many courses are really playing 6200-6400 yards....with quite a few par 4's at 340-380 yards.....and many of the bombers play a fairway wood off the tee to put their approach shots to an ideal wedge distance that they favor....so they have their distance advantage (driver) removed from their hand on the tee block.
At the end of the day....it's drive for show....putt for DOUGH or the WIN. Look at how sloppy Lexi's short game is.....Lexi's flat stick was on fire at the KNC. I really like Lexi and it's a shame that her short game looks so uncomfortable.....she's the US pro that would be a great #1 Merican pro.

I hope there are NO Majors this year with negligible rough! Totally agree. I don't know if the Cali drought had an affect with watering the course at Mission Hills.....it's been fairly absent of rough the last couple of years. The USWO and Women's PGA Championship will be played on classic parkland tracks....I hope the USGA & PGA grow the rough and pinch in the fairways. It would be a shame if the PGA of America was not able to negotiate to make sure the gals play on the West course at Westchester. Let's see how the LGU sets up the WBO in 2015....though it's hit and miss with the WBO.....it's the weather that really makes the event fun to watch....but can be no fun for the players. Hope the LET sets up the Evian tough.

They don't "water" the rough, like with sprinklers. Mother nature must do that, and they tried to let the rough grow. But no rain. I think the US Open did it on purpose though, with their "brown is the new green" BS.

I'm not saying driving distance doesn't have its advantages, but you need a good shot game if you want any shot at success. I bet Brittany Lincicome would love to give up a few yards for some more accuracy with the putter.
You guys were right about Pinehurst, though. They really screwed up such a classic track.

MR3putt I was not talking about the overall distance of the course. When there are long par fours and short par fives, wide fairways, and no rough. The course is set up to favor long hitters "period" If they can't take advantage of it, too bad for them. I never said they would automatic score low, only that it favors them.

Here are questions on lpga members receiving sponsor exemptions:
1) how many can they accept?
2) does the money won as a sponsor exemption count as "official" official?
I noticed Lydia Ko had a sponsor exemption to this years Thailand Open and the monies she won did NOT count as "official" money. Same happened to Michelle Wie 2 years ago.
thank you ahead of time.

I noticed Lydia Ko had a sponsor exemption to this years Thailand Open and the monies she won did NOT count as "official" money. Same happened to Michelle Wie 2 years ago. thank you ahead of time. 1) A player can accept up to 6 sponsor exemptions/year. It used to be 2/year until Wie came along, after which so many sponsors wanted her in the field that they upped it to six. Note that the 6 does not include events the LPGA does not control, like the US Women's Open. One of my peeves is that more popular players can max out their exemptions and earn membership on tour if they play well enough at those events. Players like Pressel, Hull and Wie did get a big advantage over good but not so popular players in trying to earn a tour card that way. If it were up to me, you would only be allowed to earn a card from a sponsor's invite if you won the event. 2) I always thought the money counted as official if you were a tour member, regardless of whether you needed an exemption (however, if you get into an LPGA field because of status on another tour, your money doesn't count as official I think). Is this correct?
