So what did everyone think of the mass start speed skating? I liked it. So funny to watch some of the wash-out burst out early...only to run out of gas. The Japanese female winner didn't even looked tired. The Korean male winner should pay his team mate 30% of his endorsements to set him up for the win.

Well, the gold medal game turned out not to be that great for the Garlic Girls, and their fairytale run ended with an 8-3 defeat. It just felt like they didn't have their best stuff, and Sweden, who had won the gold several times in the past, were ready to take advantage. I'm a tad disappointed, but really feel more great happiness in what they did this week in winning the first ever medal for the Koreans in this sport. It's a bit weird during the medal ceremony, because the bronze and gold medalists come in having just won, while the silver medalist comes in off a loss. But these ladies have nothing to feel bad about. They exceeded all expectations by a mile, and a silver medal is an incredible achievement for a team many thought would not even be an afterthought this week. https://www.instagram.com/p/BfmmxCFDyU3 https://www.instagram.com/p/BfmzQqsHOw6 https://www.instagram.com/p/Bfm2iljnO3T During the tournament they beat every team at least once, including the other two medalists. The Euros, Canadians and Americans should be glancing warily behind them, because after the way the Japanese and Koreans played here, I would not be a bit surprised to see Asians start to swamp this sport in the next Olympics or two. And like happened with golf, it will probably impact the women more than the men. https://www.instagram.com/p/BfmoDBMjUct I'm betting that outside of Sweden, more fans were interested in and rooting for the losers this day than the winners. Even USA Today's article is tellingly titled 'Garlic Girls lose', not 'Sweden wins'. https://www.instagram.com/p/BfmCWUJBR2h This is a huge win for the sport of curling, and it will be interesting to see if Annie, Steak, Sunny, Chocho and Pancake inspire a generation of girls to pursue this sport like Se Ri Pak's exploits did for golf in 1998. Congrats again to Team Kim and thanks for all the thrills! Hwaiting!!

The mass start speed skating event is CRAZY! It's just what it sounds like: a dozen plus skaters all skating at the same time on the long track course. It's new at the Olympics. The Koreans did really well at this event, probably because it resembles short track a little, right down to the slow start. It's around 14 laps or so. In both the men's and women's races, one skater got out to a huge lead, and in both cases, was reeled in once the main mass of skaters stopped goofing around. In the women's match, the Japanese skater Nana Takagi won the gold, but the crowd got a thrill when Korean Kim Bo-Reum collected a silver. https://www.instagram.com/p/BflGpNXld2w https://www.instagram.com/p/BflPYnmFo4f In the men's version, it looked like Dutch legend Sven Kramer was going to win when he got out to a 50 foot lead, but suddenly a group of three skaters picked up the speed and blew past him. Those three sprinted for the final lap and a half, and coming out on top was Korean skater Lee Seung Hoon. Gold! The great day continued for Korea with a silver in the men's 4-man bobsled. There was also a silver medal won in the 'parallel giant slalom' (whatever that is). The winner there was Lee Sang Ho. Great day for Korea, and great record-smashing Olympics for the team, as they won more medals than ever before in their history.

It turns out that the silver medalist from women's mass skating, Kim Bo Reum, is a controversial figure who has many haters in Korea. It all dates back a few days ago to when she, Ji Woo Park and Seon Yeong Noh participated in the team pursuit event. They lost in the quarterfinals to the Dutch team. In this event, three skaters skate together, and they do not finish until the third and final skater crosses the finish line. Normally, the teammates will hang back and even physically assist the slowest skater to help him/her get to the finish. But in this case, Park and Kim visibly left Noh far behind. Noh was devastated after the race, but neither Kim nor Park went to console her (only their coach sat with her afterwards). Then, both were interviewed by Korean TV, and they sneeringly threw Noh under the bus for the loss. The reaction was instantaneous: both women were hounded on Instagram and their internet cafes by angry netizens, who felt they had betrayed and shamed their teammate inexcusably on national TV. Kim ended up canceling her Instagram account shortly thereafter. Then an online petition was started to have both thrown off the team: they gathered over 250,000 signatures in just a few days (!). The below hater suggests they be removed from Team Korea and put on an 'Olympic Athletes from Korea' team (an obvious play on the situation with Russia). https://www.instagram.com/p/BfZ6yBgno2A Kim's longtime apparel sponsor, NEPA, decided not to redo their sponsorship of her. A few days later, Kim held a press conference trying to contain the damage. She apologized profusely, cried a lot, but most of the haters didn't forget or forgive. Most are convinced that their treatment of Noh was not a onetime thing, but rather that they had been systematically bullying and belittling the skater during training as well. Here's the press conference (in Korean) if you are interested: When Kim won the silver in the mass start, the enthusiasm of the crowd was probably the quietest you'll ever hear for a Korean winning a medal. No wonder she looked so sour on the medal stand. I have no sympathy for what Kim seems to have done to Noh, but I hope she can grow from this and get past this. This sort of incident is the type that can ruin someone's life, especially in Korea, where online bullying is such a tough problem.

As the Olympic flame was being extinguished, pretty sure Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir were silently sobbing in the booth. I really felt bad for them. I'm sure these games are a great deal of fun for them but alas it's only every four years.
But I was sad too. Mostly because I had gotten so into the curling. Garlic girls were unforgettable. Beijing is going to be so hyped!
