more pics on blog: In-Gee Chun Wins 2015 Japan Women’s Open, Second JLPGA Major Victory Of The SeasonIn-Gee ChunWith the way players hop from tour to tour these days, going wherever there is prizemoney to be won, maybe the four Major women’s golf tours (LPGA, LET, JLPGA, KLPGA) should hand out a Global Player of the Year award. It would honor whichever player had the greatest success tour-hopping in a calendar year. If such an award existed…actually, I’m not certain that it doesn’t exist, I might just not be aware of its existence…then 2015’s Global Player of the Year, in my humble opinion, would be In-Gee Chun. She had already made her first victory on the KLPGA a Major back in 2013, the Korea Women’s Open, when she duplicated that achievement on the JLPGA in May 2015 as she made her first victory on the Japanese tour a Major, the 2015 Salonpas Cup. In-Gee would make it a three-time achievement in July by making her first LPGA victory the greatest test in women’s golf, the US Women’s Open. Two weeks later, she would add another KLPGA Major victory at the 2015 Hite Jinro Championship. By the way, that was her 4th KLPGA title of the season. And if all of that were not enough of a case for Chun as my mythical Global Player of the Year, she now has won her 2nd JLPGA Major of the Year at arguably that tour’s greatest event, the Japan Women’s Open. In American Football, there is a Hall of Famer named Cris Carter of whom it was said, hyperbolically, all he does is score touchdowns. In the same vein, I feel like saying of In-Gee Chun, again not literally, all she does is win Majors. Like Cris Carter, In-Gee does more than what that description of her says, but it gives an idea of how great she excels at doing that one…in this case, pretty amazing…thing. It wasn’t as easy win for In-Gee Chun. Like the US Women’s Open, the Japan Women’s Open tested the skills and wills of the field with the course and the elements. After 4 rounds were in the books, only Mi Hyang Lee, Erika Kikuchi and In-Gee were under par, all tied at 2-under. It took a 4-hole playoff, but in the end In-Gee took home top honors and the 24 million Japanese Yen (about $200,000 USD) winner’s share. So Yeon RyuThere were familiar names to LPGA fans in America competing such as So Yeon Ryu and Shanshan Feng. Ryu tied for 14th with another one of my favorites, Ha Neul Kim. But how So Yeon arrived in 14th was admittedly disappointing. She was in solo 3rd at 2-under after the first three rounds, only 2 shots behind overnight leader Erika Kikuchi. In fact, Ryu was 1 shot ahead of eventual champion In-Gee Chun. But she plummeted from the top of the leaderboard with a final round 78. Just an even par round would have put So Yeon into the playoff. Teresa Lu looked to be gaining some ground on JLPGA stats queen Bo-Mee Lee, but after Lu missed the cut and Lee finished tied for 4th, it appears it would take a massive surge by Teresa combined with an utter collapse by Bo-Mee for Lee not to win JLPGA Player of the Year. However, there are more tournaments to be played, including another Major…and I haven’t done the math on the points…so maybe the race is not yet over. Before getting on the to the photos, I have to give respect to amateur Minami Katsu, who continues to shine with a tie for 11th. Minami has emerged as a potential future champion on the JLPGA. I’m following her progress with great interest. 1 IN-GEE CHUN (-2) with low amateur, Minami Katsu T2 MI HYANG LEE (-2) T2 ERIKA KIKUCHI (-2) T4 BO-MEE LEE (E) T4 ASUKA KASHIWABARA (E) T6 MI-JEONG JEON (+2) T6 SHANSHAN FENG (+2) T6 KOTONO KOZUMA (+2)

Man alive, has this been a fantastic year for In Gee Chun, and it keeps getting better and better.
All day, every time I checked the scores, even though In Gee seemed to always be 1 to 3 shots back, I kept feeling she was going to somehow pull it off. This wasn't like the first Major she won in Japan, where she set herself up with such a big lead going into Sunday that even a lackluster final day made no difference. Here, she had to fight every step of the way. And she wasn't playing her tip top best, either. She made plenty of mistakes, and has struggled a bit since August. But she found a way to hang in there, and like champions do, she made the shots that counted to win this thing. She must have a heart of pure iron.
Consider these facts:
In Gee played that 18th hole four times in regulation. The first three times she made bogey. But on Sunday, she had to make par to keep her hopes alive. She did it. A few minutes later, Kikuchi made bogey there to force the playoff that In Gee won.
In Gee has played two Japanese tour events in her career, both Majors, and won them both. Has anyone ever done that before -- win the first two events on a tour, both of them Majors? On any tour, man or woman?
She now has seven total wins in 2015. Four of them are Majors, on three different tours. She has now won in her career the national opens in Korea, Japan and the US.
On a messageboard I checked out, several posters have started calling her Queen Gee. OK, I guess that's a more respectful nickname than Dumbo, although I'm not sure it quite works. But for today at least, Queen Gee it is!
Compare what she has done to Hyo Joo last year. Hyo Joo won 6 times in 2014 (+ one event at the end of the year that counted towards 2015). She won four Majors, too, but three in Korea and the Evian. And she traveled a heck of a lot less than Chun has this year. This is some awesome stuff we are seeing!
A few words about the other Sisters. Mi Hyang made it interesting by posting 2 under and forcing In Gee to match it; great week for her. Alas, poor So Yeon just got on the bogey train right away and was out of the event almost before she knew it. Bo Mee T-4th, Ji Hee Lee T-6th, and an awesome rally by Q Baek: her 69 was better than any single round In Gee managed this week, and got her an 18th place despite also shooting a 77 and 76. Ha Neul, Sun Ju Ahn, Hyo Joo also managed top 20s. A great week for the Koreans!
But an epic one for In Gee. Can't wait to find some video highlights of this thing!!! Hwaiting!

So Yeon is a mystery to me. Wasn't it Butch who was recently quoted that one needs to be nasty to win. SYR should heed this advise......along with the other Koreans too...then we'd see the Koreans winning at a 90% rate on the LPGA. The best thing that can happen is for SYK and The Hulk to make the 2016 Int'l Crown team and then have a good dust up in the parking lot in Chicago with Hana/SYK vs. Kerr/Lewis ....then we'd really see the start of a rivalry.....the Koreans are too nice to the Mericans on the LPGA.

Sorry...there is no other KING and there should not be another QUEEN. If In Gee likes DUMBO...then it should stick....it would differentiate In Gee and make her more noticeable to Merican fans with DUMBO as a nickname. Few know Eldrick.

IGC gave them a lesson in how to win and showed the girls you can do it without dressing like a circus clown. OK....let's here it...so who do you think dresses like a clown. I like the fashion style of the KLPGA gals....I wish more LPGA Koreans dressed closer to their KLPGA counterparts. I like the flat brim BML was sporting on Sunday...it's bada*s.

A little tidbit I just read: apparently this week, which is an off week for the KLPGA, In Gee will play a round of golf with former President George W Bush. I'm guessing Bush is in town for the President's Cup?
Gives you an idea that her profile is really on the rise in Korea!

I've been looking all over the internet trying to find any video of this tournament.
Finally, success! Here is the four hole playoff featuring In Gee, Mi Hyang Lee and Erika Kikuchi. Alas, the guy ends it right after the final putt falls, so no trophy celebration or anything like that. But it's still pretty cool!

Not the trophy presentation, but In Gee being interviewed during the presentation.

Now that Dumbo's coming to the LPGA...she should try to gain a bit of distance with her 5'9" stature. I want a G30.

Not the trophy presentation, but In Gee being interviewed during the presentation. By the way, in case you haven't checked this out: she gives the entire interview in English and Japanese. No Korean. It seems like she's getting much more comfortable talking in English.

She probably doesn't know a whole lot of Japanese, and since she needed a translator anyway, she was practicing speaking English in front of a crowd. It's actually really smart - very few people there would probably notice if she screwed up.

HF, thanks for finding the playoff video. Too bad the picture quality was fuzzy and they stretched the screen...Erika's ball at 3:08 look like an egg.
Mi Hyang spoke English to her caddie; maybe she'll bring him along through Asia. She sure walks fast...mabye old Mike couldn't keep up.
