Round 4: Ryu Defeats Jang in Tense Mano-a-Mano Battle
With two of the top players in the field tied for the lead heading into the final round, this promised to be a great battle. Could So Yeon Ryu overcome her demons and close this one out? Or would feisty Ha Na Jang defend her crown? Or would Yeun Jung Seo sneak up and beat them both? Well, Seo struggled most of the day and was not a factor, leaving the tournament to be decided between Ryu and Jang. Jang dug herself a hole right away, making double bogey on the first hole. Meanwhile, Ryu made birdies on three of her first five holes. Jang bounced back, making three birdies herself. By the fifth hole, Ryu led by two. But on holes 9 & 10, So Yeon made back to back bogies to fall into a tie with Jang. So Yeon has done this in the past, and the question was: could she avoid giving the tournament away? The shot of the tournament came on 12. So Yeon left herself on the wrong level on the green, some fifty feet from the hole. Yet somehow, she read the pace and break perfectly and dunked the improbable birdie to move to 11 under and a one shot lead over Jang. The momentum changed big time after that... Jang made bogies on the next two holes, and So Yeon had a comfortable three shot lead. Even a bogey on 17 did not hurt Ryu too badly; she hit the green on 18 and cozied her birdie putt right next to the hole for a tap in par and two shot win. Meanwhile, In Gee Chun managed a 71 to finish t-7th, an incredible comeback from nearly missing the cut. But the story is So Yeon Ryu. This marks So Yeon Ryu's 9th career KLPGA win, and first since 2012. Congratulations to her on the perfect warm up for the Evian in two weeks! Scores: 1. So Yeon Ryu 70 -11 2. Ha Na Jang 72 -9 3. Congratulation to So Yeon on her win. With So Yeon there is always a little drama. Coming into hole seventeen, I figured she had it wrapped up.
However Ha Na had a short birdie putt, and she left her lag putt way short. I was worried that she may three putt, from there and Ha Na makes birdie. However Ha Na missed badly and she two putted. Kudos to Ha Na and In Gee for good tournaments.
Shin Ae and the other contenders had a tough time making putts.
