Korea beat China in the finals of the women's badminton team competition. It's the first time in 26 years of trying that the Koreans took down the Chinese. Naturally, there's controversy. According to Chinese social media, the Koreans insulted the Chinese after the win by imitating the sad look of the Chinese player after her loss. Here's an article with the detailsHere's an article from the Korean perspective

Asian Games golfers return to Inchon airport The ladies: Min Sol Kim, Hyun Jo Yoo, Ji Yoo Lim. Hyun Jo, who finished t-10th at the KB Star Championship, says she is known for her length off the tee. Yes, another young Korean bomber on the horizon. Congrats to her on being the top amateur finisher in the field! The ladies and some team officials Min Sol - she said in an interview that she was disappointed that she was unable to help the team to a gold medal, it was what she wanted more than anything (she said she made too many mistakes on the final day). I hope she isn't too disappointed, silver is still very good.

South Korea won the women's doubles in table tennis. Pictured are Yubin Shin and Jee Hee Jeon. Amazing they beat the Chinese; I thought they were unbeatable in this sport!

Suzy Kim (not the KLPGA golfer) won the bronze in the springboard diving competition: Kim and Park Ha Reum also won bronze in the synchro springboard event. Anyone remember the brilliant Korean archers from the last Olympics? They're baaack... and starting competition. An San was the butt kicker for the women in Tokyo and here she is again: Im Shi Hyun (L) and An San (R) both advanced to the quarters Im is the up-and-coming young gun (young arrow?) joining the wily legend An. Will be fun to see how they do this week!

You might not be surprised to discover that the women's archery individual finals will come down to 20-year-old Sihyeon Lim (who shot the top score in qualifying) and three-time Olympic gold medalist An San. Talk about a dream match! (Sihyeon Lim is apparently the accepted Western version of her name, not Si Hyun Im as I previously used). It wasn't easy for Lim to get here. She faced stiff competition in the semis against a Chinese archer named Li Ze Man. They wound up tied and had a shoot off (one arrow each until one won) to decide who advanced. Lim went first and nailed a ten; the nervous Chinese archer then "only" made 9 and Lim advanced. An San's path was easier; the first two sets were close, but after that she cruised to a win 7-3, also over a Chinese archer named Hai Li Gan, who had finished second in qualifying (An had finished third). Good luck to both in the finals! They will take place (as well as the bronze medal match) on the 7th. PS, I was confused to learn that there are actually TWO different types of archery at these games; there is only one at the Olympics. Here they have recurve, which is the Olympic version, and compound. The differences are: in recurve, the arrow is entirely shot by the strength of the archer, whereas in compound, there is a machine that helps with drawing the string. Also, the distance for recurve is 70m, but only 50m for compound. The target is slightly smaller in compound owing to the shorter distance. The Koreans are world class in compound and have an archer in the finals there (against an Indian I believe), but they dominate in recurve.

Perhaps not the biggest surprise, but the Korean women's archery team won the gold medal again! This is their seventh straight victory dating back to 1998. Look at that team: the gold and silver medalists in individual (we just don't know the order yet, as they play tomorrow) An San (L) and Sihyeon Lim (R), with Mi Sun Choi in the middle. The men also won the gold medal, making this the first time both squads won the gold at the same Asian Games in seven years. A few days ago, Sihyeon Lim teamed with Woo-Seok Lee to win the mixed team recurve event as well: Can Lim become the first woman to win three golds at one Asian Games for archery? Stay tuned! Congrats!

The men's soccer gold match is Saturday ... excerpt from AP article:
South Korea’s under-24 players are preparing for the biggest game of their careers on Saturday, but standing between Asian Games gold and military exemption is traditional foe Japan.
The Asian Games, being staged in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, a year later than scheduled due to China’s strict pandemic lockdown policies in 2022, has brought the two rivals together in the final for the second successive tournament.
“We absolutely have to win that match. No questions asked,” South Korea coach Hwang Sun-hong said. “We will pour everything we have into winning that match.”

The women's individual archery (recurve) final was a battle between two giants in the sport. Sihyeon Lim has already won two golds this games: for the women's team and the mixed team. An San won three gold medals at the recent Olympics and also was part of the gold medal team here. Could the younger Lim upset the superstar? As it turned out, it wasn't even close. Lim dominated the match, winning in straight sets. She becomes the first woman to ever win three archery golds at the same Asian Games. Congrats to her! As if that weren't enough, the Korean Sports Association gave Lim the female MVP award as best woman representing Korea for the entire games. Quite an achievement for a 20 year old!

Siobhan Haughey went straight from the Asian Games to a World Cup meet in Berlin, where she is facing all the big names (mostly Aussies) in her events -- and wiping them out! She just shattered the 100 m freestyle World Cup record with the third fastest swim in history and by far the fastest ever by an Asian swimmer. I guess she's still riding the momentum of her gold in this event at the Asian Games.
The Aussie fans are having major cognitive dissonance, as this tweet (with the race video) shows. Her time beat the time that won the World Champs earlier this year.
She also won the 200m Free and also set the World Cup record there, too:

Haughey continues to impress. Last week she competed at the US Open Championship (I assume she was there because she went to college in the States). She won the 200m freestyle, kicking Katie Ledecky's butt in the process. 20 minutes later -- not a typo -- she won the 100m breaststroke, an event she is not even a specialist in, beating the American who won the gold in Tokyo. In all, she won three golds and a bronze during the week.
