Sung Hyun Park and Ariya were also long hitters and were #1. The real key is not to be the biggest bomber, the key is to hit it far enough to reach par fives in two, or get close enough to have short irons in as opposed to rescue clubs. Yes, Sung Hung reached the top-10 in driving distance for 2017-19, but her 20 weeks at Rolex #1 (spread over four separate frames) pales in comparison to the three players I mentioned ... Ariya 51 gave up hitting her driver during her 23 weeks at Rolex #1, although she has never been a weakling with her other clubs. Golf courses have more par-fours than par-fives. What kind of club do you think Ayakee Furoo (#140 in driving distance, CME points galore) is hitting into 400+ yard par-fours? There are more routes to success on the LPGA tour versus the mens' tours. How about Yeah, Lee Won acing the Q-series and becoming a Korean Furoo ... will that work for you? Works for me. ******
Looked back through my notes regarding Hyo Joon Jang ... she was +6 while playing her Round One at Cognizant ... the standard bearer in her group dumped on her course management skills. I think I saw her hit one drive at Liberty National, that was about it. One week before she got hurt at Shoprite, she completed four rounds at Mizuho, shooting +10. She shot -17 in Portland ... umm, that's a 27-stroke difference ... you'll have to take my word that Jersey City was NOT a goat track. As for Jang, it's still wait-and-see. I don't think I'd heard of Jang before she qualified (barely) for the LPGA by finishing 10th on the Epson tour. She didn't make an impression on me with her amateur record or anything she did professionally before Portland. So let's say I'll need a bit more evidence before I buy her as the real deal. But having watched her last week, I will say that she did impress me. Certainly on the greens. But her goal right now should be keeping her card; anything else is gravy. I don't think Portland is a true goat track, because there are a few places on the course where, if you hit a bad shot at the wrong time, you can really get burned. Hole 17 can be set up to be really hard, although I only saw it on Saturday and the hole position was easy then. I've seen a lot of struggles over the years on holes 3, 9, 14 and 18. Really, they just need to be a little more tough in their course set up and they could make it a decent test.

We're going to get to see Hye-Jin on Thursday's broadcast, don't you think? She's with Lexi and Rose, and the group will have just made the turn when the tv window begins. Maybe some of Corpuz, Ewing, and Kupcho, and of course, anyone else having a hot round on the course in the afternoon. Hopefully one or more of the sisters... I admire your optimism.

They keep showing Hye-Jin! They can't ignore her because she's minus-5 after 15 and she has a clean scorecard with 5 birdies. Of course, they are showing Rose and Lexi too, and they're also following Corpuz, Ewing, and Jen Kupcho just as I'd predicted.

Right, the key is that she's near the top of the leaderboard. I watched the round and checked the first time I saw her; it was :45 minutes into the broadcast. At that point they had shown Zhang and Thompson umpteen times. A few minutes later she hit a great tee shot but they didn't bother to show her birdie attempt (which she made), just her two groupmates. But when she moved to 4 under, they did start showing her almost as much as the other two. So the key: play well! I can get behind that. Any bets whether they show Hae Ran tomorrow?

Yecchh ... MHL (+2) was 0-for-2 in sand saves ... is this a sand save attempt? She's not next to the green. Nice clean rounds by Hye Jin Choi and Hae Ran Ryu at minus five. Hae Ran missed only one green https://www.instagram.com/p/Cw6ErzoOlaj Great Eagle from the fairway on eighteen by Sung Hyun Park to get her to minus two.

Hae Ran has one thing going for her to get tv coverage on Friday, the other players in her threesome. Charley Hull is tied with Hae Ran at minus-5 so both are near the top of the leaderboard. This could result in the cameras following them as the feature group if they continue to have success. Maybe even better, Linn Grant is the third. She's way off the pace and needs a really good round to make the cut. But she's Linn Grant; she attracts cameras almost as well as Lexi.
Liu is the current leader and of course they will show the leader, but her playing mates are Lauren Coughlin and Suwannapura, neither close to the lead. Oh, here's a group that will get some screen time... Lydia, Brooke, and Amy Yang. Amy is buried on the leaderboard but I predict that she will show up on tv at least once IF she wears that one hat... you know the one I mean? Maybe Pedersen and Fassi, although their third is Yubol. Delacour, Minjee, one of the Jutanugarn sisters if they get hot. Some of those are the golfers that we'll probably see on Friday...

Hull and Grant will also get a lot of attention because they will doubtless be important at the Solheim, and this is the time of year where the media relentlessly flogs that event.
I am hoping that Hae Ran can keep it up; I would love to see her get into the mix this weekend!

Uh oh, here we go again ... Wenbo Liu earned $955 in eight Epson tour starts this year ... that settles it, she'll finish ahead of all the Koreans on Sunday. 🦄
Chanettee's win moved Elinor Sudow into the 144th field spot, which is why she dropped out of the qualifier.
Pos Player Name Nat. Par Score 1 Faith Kilgore (USA) USA -2 70 2 Wenbo Liu (CHN) CHN -1 71 After Thursday, I think that we can safely say that Wenbo Liu is not the new Chanettee... Speaking of Chanettee, after the first round she's just making the projected cut so lightning is unlikely to strike twice in a row. On the other hand, she's only six strokes off the lead which is not much worse than her position after the first round in Portland last week, when lightning struck the first time... The other Monday qualifier, Faith Kilgore, looking on the bright side, she is tied with the great Lexi after round one. Looking on the realistic side, she is tied with the great Lexi after round one and both are tied with mi espartana colombiana Valery Plata. But none of the three are totally out of striking range to play the weekend. One thing I noticed about Valery is that she frequently has a big improvement from her (disastrous) first round to her second. The Dow doesn't count because it was a pairs event with different formats in different rounds, but she improved 6 strokes at the Dana, 6 strokes at the ShopRite, 12 strokes at the Founders Cup. She buries herself in the first round and then recovers but not enough to make the cut, usually nowhere near enough. She's made one cut, in the Lotte, and that is the only LPGA tournament this year where she shot under par in the first round. But all is not bleak in Bucaramanga/Floridablanca... Mariajo is T12 at minus-4... ya gotta support her, Bruin fans! If Paula Reto and Ash Buhai can find redemption in their early 30s, why not Uribe?

Chien at 14 under, five shot lead, and Hye Jin only shot even today, so she's now 9 shots back. Hae Ran hasn't even teed off yet. Are the Koreans ever going to catch a break? I think Hae Ran needs at least a 67 to stay in the hunt. Good luck to her!

Good rounds minus four by A Lim Kim and Sei Young Kim to put them at minus one. Na Rin An is also minus one with a one under par score the second round Right now the cut line is even par but with this birdie fest Tournament minus one may not make the cut. Na Rin An made bogey seventeen and Sei Young Kim made bogey on eighteen. A Lim Kim had seven birdies and two bogeys through thirteen to get to minus two. But after a bogey on fourteen she didn't make another birdie, Seems like this has become the theme for the Korean golfers of finishing rounds with bogeys. Also when they have a really good round their next round too many times are mediocre.
Footnote: Mi Hyang Lee made five birdies nine through sixteen to get to minus three, so the bogey on seventeen is forgiven Jeongeun Lee5 made three birdies no bogeys back nine to get to minus two.

Yes, the tv coverage was all over Lydia and Brooke... yes, Amy did wear the hat. After occasionally seeing Amy in the background as either Brooke or Lydia was putting, they finally did show Amy putting on 14. Since her score was missing the projected cut by six strokes at that point, it had to be the hat!

Hae Ran played like garbage, Hye Jin is ten back, no Koreans in the top 20.
Yup, typical week for the Koreans!
I'm calling it now. No Korean wins the rest of the season. Not counting Jin Young, I think she could get one. But no one else. This will probably be the worst year for the Koreans since before Se Ri came over.
