First round kicks off Thursday at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Van City ... a weekly grounds pass (including taxes and fees) is 144.20 CAD ... or $106.37 USD in real money, which isn't bad if you're going every day (gates open Tuesday).
*****
The full list of 16 tournament invitees is now filled, which includes Yanjun (Victoria) Liu (aka Lefty Sung Hung) of Princeton U.
*****
The Monday qualifier at nearby Point Grey Golf & Country Club will pick four players ... and only four "real" LPGAers are in the field (Simmermacher, Plata, Ilhee Lee and Kum-Kang Park) ... they should be locks, except there are probably a few amateurs who live on the golf course and know every green break. Entries are closed and there are 42 names, including Catherine Rao (aka the Princeton pepper pot). Looks like Erica Shepherd dropped out ... maybe getting ready for LPGA Q-school instead.

In case anyone cares, Penguin Princess is first on the AON scoreboard and Jeeno Jat is second ... we know how this will end.

The LPGA website has the past results of this event going back to 2001 ... but the first one was played in 1973. Fortunately for you data freaks, this year's media guide has more dope than you can shake a stick at:
There was no cut in 1973 ... 74 players completed all three rounds, but only the top-49 got paid. ... the smallest check was $25. There were 7 WDs after the second round ... they were playing so bad, so what was the point of finishing, right?
I'm starting to review some of the Montreal Gazette articles from the 1973 event ... the Wednesday celebrity pro-am had a crowd of 6,350 ... Joanne Carner was paid a $200 prize for her group winning (18-under par) ... her foursome included the NHL's Gilbert Perreault ... and college student Louise Larochelle who consistently drove it longer than Big Mama ... but, said she had no pro aspirations with this quote: "I don't think it's for a married woman ... not that I'm close to getting married but I suppose I'm going to one day."

It's not just China that wants to steal The Zhangster ... from the Golf Canada website:
GOLF CANADA TO HOST CLINIC FOR INDIGENOUS YOUTH WITH SPECIAL GUEST ROSE ZHANG Golf Canada has connected with its First Tee network in the Vancouver area to provide children with a unique opportunity to join a golf clinic with LPGA Tour global rising star Rose Zhang. My field rating for this event is a pretty solid 68%, up from 65% last year. My breakdown is 71.5% from the brand new reshuffled Priority List and 64.5 % from the Rolex Rankings. Nine of the top ten players in the world will be teeing it up and seventeen of the top twenty. The field will be led by the top five players in the world: 1- Lilia Vu 2- Nelly Korda 3- Celine Boutier 4- Jin Young Ko 5- Ruoning Yin Top twenty LPGA players not teeing it up this week: 9- Charley Hull 12- Atthaya Thitikul
Paula Reto is the defending champion.
There is lots of other news to report this week. The LPGA had its second and final Priority List reshuffle. It is impossible to report all the changes, but here are the most significant ones: Players who gained the most and figure to play in more tournaments than they would have before the reshuffle include: Alexa Pano 168-101 Esther Henseleit 135-107 Stephanie Meadow 127-109 Bailey Tardy 145-114 Lindy Duncan 186-115 Dani Holmqvist 178-142 Soo Bin Jin 164-149 Nicole Broch Estrup 400- 150 Su Oh 170-153 Caroline Hedwall 387-154 Olivia Cowan 376-155 Muni He 192-162 Alena Sharp 193-164 Players that got hurt the most include: Amanda Dogherty 114-131 Caroline Inglis 112-137 Jaravee Bonchant 117-138 Maddy Szeryk 108-139 Lauren Hartlage 111-144 Natthakritta Vongtaveelap 109-146 Pavarisa Yoktuan 119-152 Marissa Steen 131-151 Christina Kim 155-181 Marijo Uribe 129-174
Alexa Pano was the eighth first time winner this year. Alexa Pano's victory was the seventh tournament this year to be decided by a playoff. Alexa Pano's victory this past week was the seventh tournament won by American players this year. France is second with three wins (all by Celine Boutier). The American players have won in lots of different ways this year: They won with the strongest fields - Lilia Vu (Chevron Championship) and Allisen Corpuz (U.S. Women's Open) both 95% field ratings. They Won with the weakest field - Alexa Pano (ISPS Handa World Invitational) field rating 8%. They won the only Couples event - Cheyenne Knight and Elizabeth Szokel (The Dow Great Lakes Invitational). They won an Inaugural Event - Rose Zhang (Mizuho Americas Open). They won in Asia - Lilia Vu (Honda LPGA Thailand). They won in Europe - Lilia Vu (AIG Women's Open in England) and Alexa Pano (ISPS Handa in Ireland) They won in the United States - four times. They have had five first time winners (Lilia Vu, Allisen Corpuz, Rose Zhang, Elizabeth Szokel, Alexa Pano). They have won three tournaments in playoffs (twice against American opponents). They have done this all without getting victories this year from three of their top ranked players ( Nelly Korda, Danielle Kang, and Lexi Thompson), showing the depth of their players.
There was some major movement in the Race to the CME Globe this week. As I note every week, you have to finish in the top 100 to retain full playing privileges for the 2024 season. The most important moves this week: Alexa Pano makes the biggest splash, wrapping up her card for next year (and the year after that because of the victory) with a huge move from 132 to 38. The following players haven't wrapped up their cards for next year yet, but have improved their chances: Olivia Cowan 118-79 Jasmine Suwannapura 91-82 Wichanee Meechai 97-83 Dani Holmqvist 94-84 Azahara Munoz 131-97 Soo Bin Jin 108-99 The following players are still on the outside of the top 100, but now have a better chance than last week: Marissa Steen 110-104 Dewi Weber 135-117 Muni He 136-124
There was not too much movement in the Rolex Rankings this week: Celine Boutier moved up a spot to Number 3 in the world rankings. Jin Young Ko dropped to Number 4. Ryann O'Toole jumps from 83-79 Esther Henseleit Leaps from 129-112 Alexa Pano Catapults up 233 spots from 402-169

The groups are set ... MHL gets Brianna Do and Gina Kim. Do's coach gave her an extensive lesson on chipping from various lies around the practice green at KPMG ... didn't do her any good there ... nor at Dana ... nor at Dow GL. 🚽 BTW, MHL is #3 on tour in Sand Save Percentage ... NOT, that I want her in the sand, but I'd love to see her finish #1.
Other notable groups -
The EMP/Waitwait Zhang/Nomura
Metraux/Dr. Noh/Annie
Lauren Kim(a)/Fall/De Roey
Su Oh/Szeryk One/Szeryk Two
DK/Crusty Grrr/Nanna Cursed Mad ... surrounded by open microphones, I hope.

DK/Crusty Grrr/Nanna Cursed Mad ... surrounded by open microphones, I hope. Brooke, Nelly, and Lilia "I love you" maybe considered the premier group at 1:21 local time, 4:21 EDT. That would fit with the telecast window of 6:30-9:30 EDT.
Bailey Two has to get up early with her group Ruixin Liu and Sagstrom in one of the 7:00 am tee times. Will Bailey Two ever do anything again? She had something like five and a half rounds of success earlier in the summer... still CME #74... gets a card next year...
Fur-oo, Nasa, and the defending champion Reto at 7:44 am local time.
All-American group Ally Ewing, Angel, and Rose at 7:55 am local time.
Lin and Yin, that's Xiyu and Ruoning, with Ciganda at 8:17. If anyone tries to kiss one of them, like that Spanish guy did at the soccer or futból mundial World Cup a few days ago, Ciganda will deck the guy... (This would be Haney's favorite group, "I'm picking the Koreans Lin and Yin..." /sarcasm)

I guess In Gee needs to get some top 5 finishes in very soon if she's to qualify for CME Globe at end of season

Iglooland's "other" Brooke is in 1st at -4 thru 8 holes. There's one I called right for a change ... see my 2019 KJ Choi junior report. Has a birdie and eagle on her first two par fives ... course length will be NO problem for her.

Jin Young liked sausage rolls in Britain, and now, in Canada, she's hankering for Tim Horton's!

Round 1 Great to see Jin Young get out to a strong start. She's had trouble doing that lately. Here's hoping her doughnut-fueled golf is going to keep being strong the next three days. Sei Young Kim had a rare good round, but the real test will be if she can keep it up tomorrow. It's been ages since she's been able to follow up a strong round with another one. I'll be rooting for her! Nice day also for Hyo Joo and Hye Jin. Alas, Hae Ran had her struggles. Six was playing well before finishing bogey-bogey. She and In Gee are going to have to work to make the cut. Sisters hwaiting! Jin Young Ko highlights:

Lefty Sung Hung (+7) will be joining her out on the street Friday ... hitting driver off the deck in the Ivy League doesn't mean jack squat out here.
