I may think Zhang gets way too much attention, but you have to admit she's been a much more accomplished golfer than Pano in her amateur career and so far as a pro. I don't resent that she gets comparatively more, just that she's treated like the best golfer of the past ten years with scant evidence to back that up. Totally agree that Zhang is far more accomplished than Pano. As I always say, "I'm not a betting man," but I were forced to choose between Rose and Alexa in this week's CPKC, in my opinion it would be foolish to bet on Alexa having a better tournament than Rose.
I just thought that the Pano win would be an interesting story for the media to emphasize. It was real news in that it was unexpected prior to the tournament and even prior to Sunday or at the least Saturday. Alexa shot 76 in round 1 and appeared headed for another missed cut, consistent with more than half of her previous events this year.
With Zhang, on the other hand, according to the media narrative she's expected to win. When she did win, it was almost anticlimactic. The unexpected story with Rose is when she doesn't do well. And the media coverage keeps following her group so that everyone can see her and wonder, "why is Rose struggling?" That's not fair to Rose.

I somehow suspect that neither Hye Jin nor Hae Ran are quaking in their boots about anyone , they're enjoying their lives and they should be. Personally, I don't want them playing Epson-level events just so they can get a win under their belts; glad they saved their energy for something more interesting. My point is that it's unfortunate that this event is given the same weight in the end as an event with lots of top players; but not much you can do about it except point it out. Tony, if you don't care about the relative competitiveness of an event, why do you always take the time to tell us what it is? Cause essentially that's all I'm doing here. Show me where I said that I don't care about the competitiveness of the event. Never said that! I only said that you can't blane Pano for beating a weak field, she can only compete against the players that entered. Also Pano didn't enter this field because it was weak and "wanted to get a win under her belt." She entered this back in January, knowing it was her birthday, and no way of knowing how strong the field would be. Soo Bin Joo was right there with Pano going into the weekend but didn't get it done when it counted. Had she won, boy would we be getting a different spin on this from you.

A quote from 7/20/2005 issue of the defunct S.S. magazine:
Well, after a decent showing at the Jamie Farr, she went to the BMO Canadian Open to try her luck. Believe it or not, this event, once a Major, had fallen on seriously hard times. Only two of the top 30 players on the money list had shown up in Halifax to contest the title; and the top seed was none other than Meena.
Maybe Big Ryu and Cyborg shouldn't be so snobby ... it sure looked like Song Hee Kim, Angela Park and Aree Song were LOCKS for LPGA wins ... until they weren't.
The PGA Tour has recently become more open in recognizing the kennel shows on its schedule ... the LPGA won't admit it, but they've had lots of canines, too ... Shoprite, Portland, Dow GL, Mexico in general, Corning and its tombstone plaque, etc. Every time the sponsors dump TONS of additional money into the majors and a few new events, it gives players the excuse to become semi-retirees ... LEXI (TM) is the latest one. Was it Rory who told Sergio that "none of us are worth the money?" I'll add on to that ... the LPGA's annual top-60 has been OVERPAID in the last 20+ years.
*********
Team Pano saved Mollie's bacon ... would have been really embarrassing for a winless LET player to take this one. Oh, and for you complainers about all the focus on the DP World Tour hacks on the broadcast, well, you'll have to live with it. The women need the men and the men need the women ... otherwise, there is NO purpose for this tournament. The old co-ed event in OZ is dead, so it had to replaced somewhere.

I'm not 'blaming' her for beating a weak field, all I said is that she has a win and Hye Jin does not yet have one and isn't that weird given how accomplished Choi is compared to her. And I would say the exact same thing if Soo Bin Joo, who has also barely contended ever, had won here. For instance, Eunjung Yi has a career win. WTF? Yeah, super obscure player, but she won the Farr one year. Nor did I say that Pano planned to be here to get a win, she's here because she needs to play wherever she can given her status and needs to earn points to keep her card. Same with Joo, Kum Kang Park and many of the other players. I said that I don't think Choi and Ryu should play weaker fields to get wins, not Pano.

I'm not sure which winless career was the most surprising. Aree Song came within a shot of winning a Major, but Song Hee was continually contending for several years without breaking through. I think she might have been the most surprising. She had a Sung Hyun Park-like decline in her career without the 7 wins Park accumulated before that happened. Hae Ran is still a newbie, but Hye Jin is starting to get to the point where she needs to break through. She just won the other month on the KLPGA, so, unless there are injuries involved, she should be working through her issues and at least contending on the LPGA sometime soon. I'm tired of her being ranked in the 20s in Rolex; this is a top ten quality player and hopefully she is going to start playing like that.

Song Hee Kim was a top ten machine, she had a good chance to win the HSBC. She was tied for the lead or second place, but I don't remember what she did in the Final Round. Another time, not sure which Tournament, she hit three balls in the water the Final round. After that she started to go down hill in her career. Funny you should mention Sung Hyun Park because they had similar demeanors.

Yes, very "foolish" in the CPKC. Rose, got tons of coverage especially first two days, finished T41 at plus+4. Alexa, whom I believe I saw one time on the four days of the broadcast, finished T22 at plus+1. Neither was a real factor in the tournament but Rose was covered as if she was for the first two days...
I must have been "channeling" the real Haney to make such a lame prediction... how wrong! Glad I'm not a betting man...
