MHL cruising along at Even thru 5 holes ... she's in the Evian field, but her position is a little precarious ... I'd like to see her pick up some CME points here as insurance, especially since she has a bad record at the team event next week. The Zhangster: two holes, two birdies. Big Ryu and Six going down the drain early.

Big Ryu and Six going down the drain early. Six righted the ship on the back nine but probably took on too much water in the first seven holes to make the cut. On the other hand, with Six you never know, she may have a minus-6 round on Friday. Top of the leaderboard includes Rose (as expected) and Bailey #2 (was that expected or unexpected)...

Another top 5 start for the Zhangster. Think of her and the hype as a gateway to learning about more players. At least she's easy to cheer for.

What women's golf really needs is for Lewis to stiff Zhang on a captain's pick (if she needs one). Her win didn't count for points because she wasn't a member.

Nice first rounds for Sei Young Kim and A Lim Kim of minus four. Jin Young Ko had a round that's seemed to be how she has played lately. Have a good front nine three birdies and a not so good back nine one bogey no birdies. She needs to pick it up because this Tournament is trending to be another birdie fest.
Ok I have to give a shoutout to Rose Zhang, five under without a birdie on the par fives.

I'm actually OK with Jin Young's first round. She tends to play her worst in the first round, especially on courses she hasn't played before. I think she will pick it up a lot in the next few days. Of course, this tournament is known for low scoring, so it might be hard for her to make up ground, but at least she didn't knock herself out of it.
I have no idea what to expect from Six. Watch her shoot a 59 tomorrow. Who knows!?

Caddie list is out ... Lauren Stephenson has had Josh Williams most of the time since turning pro, but has experimented with other guys this year ... may have dumped Josh for good since he is with Waitwait Zhang this week. Cheyenne Knight is off this week, so Cheeseburger Chad is going with Liz Szokol ... the Yangster is off, so Jan Meierling is going with Ana Belac. I assume Jesus Mozo is still with Pajaree A., but since she is off, Mozo is going with destitute Valery Plata ... at least there won't be a language problem. Finally, Min Seo Kwak has played the Epson Tour all year, earning a pitiful $1,800 ... can she do better by lugging Vicky Hurst's bag this week?
********
Ugh, JTibs dropped out after shooting 71.
********
A commenter on GolfWrx says MHL may have hurt herself getting out of a bunker ... it didn't show in her 69 (-2) score ... let's see what Friday brings.

Bogey-free -5 for a T5. GC even showed one shot of her making a putt today! KT finished as high as T4 at this event in past years, so she likes the track. She's looking for a mental coach, according to the article below. I'll give info on Tony Packo's and explain why Toledo should have been part of Michigan, not Ohio, in a later post.
Both Highland Meadows CC, which is only about a half mile south of the Michigan border, and Stone Oak CC, which is another five or six miles south, basically all the city of Toledo, "should be" located within tbe current state of Michigan according to the original text of the Northwest Ordinance approved in 1787. THIS POST IS BACKGROUND STRICTLY FOR HISTORY BUFFS so skip it if that's not your thing.
First I will give a brief description then I will supply a Wikipedia page if you really want to see the details.
At the time when the boundaries of the state of Ohio and later what was then the Michigan territory and eventually the state of Michigan were defined by Congress, at the beginning in 1787 it was originally the "Congress of the Confederation" prior to the adoption of the current US Constitution, prior to George Washington being elected president. Maps of the area around the Great Lakes were not very accurate. This resulted in a thin strip of land, five to eight miles wide and about 60 or 70 miles long, the “Toledo Strip,” being claimed by both Ohio and Michigan, based on conflicting boundary descriptions in subsequent congressional actions in the very early 1800s. For international members of Seoul Sisters, the area was 1,210 square km. Maybe that sounds big but it's tiny within the USA.
When Michigan was approved for statehood in 1836, the federal government ruled in favor of Ohio because they were a well-populated state with lots of political clout and voters while Michigan was a 'podunk' wilderness with few voters. As a compromise, Michigan was given additional land in what is now the Upper Peninsula. Originally, this 'trade' of Toledo for the wilderness of the western U.P. was considered a ripoff. But in the 1840s, copper and other mineral deposits were discovered in the western U.P. and a substantial timber industry also developed. Thus, we Michiganders like to claim that we got the best side of the compromise! So Michigan "should have" three LPGA tournaments (Meijer, Dana, and Dow) and we could almost be competitive with New Jersey at that point!
If any of you are at the tournament at Highland Meadows, drive down to Stone Oak where the Monday qualifier was held, then go about one mile further south and you will run into the intersection of "Old State Line Road." Even the Ohioans admit it!
I still have more to add on Tony Packo's in a later post. But I already told you how to find it if you're at Highland Meadows!

Round 1
Meh. Once upon a time, this course was perfect for the Sisters, but it always had the propensity to play easy, and the people setting up the course are leaning into that right now.
What I would love to see is for Jin Young to finally have a really great round. Probably won't happen on this course, but she really needs to foster the return of A-Game Jin Young before the final few Majors. Hwaiting!

Don't look now but two ex USC Trojans Alison Corpuz -5, -9, Annie Park -8, -11. That long putter is working for Annie today, with a clean Score Card and twenty four putts.
Yaeeun Hong had a good first round minus two but plus six today. Averaged two thirty-one off the tee, but she is young and will get stronger.

Haney, the next time you're in Toledo, check out the second floor dining room of Mancy's Steakhouse ... see if anyone planted a plaque commemorating the LPGA's elite members throwing Carolyn Bivens to the sharks in 2009. *************
Thumbs up to the LPGA for adding her portrait to the online scoreboard. SYLVANIA, OH - JULY 13: LPGA golfer Erica Shepherd practices her putting during the first round of the Dana Open on July 13, 2023, at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio. (Photo by Brian Spurlock/Icon Sportswire)
