Is it a weak field? Birdie Kim got in without qualifying. Wendy Doolan got in here somehow (which also marks the return of Larry the Looper for a week). Mindy Kim zoomed up to #6 on the alternate list...this looks like a good week for her to gamble $200 on Monday qualifying if she is so inclined.

Ally McDonald and Marissa Dodd shot 68 to qualify. Brooke Henderson carded a 69 and with the Pan-Am Games off her schedule she'll tee it up instead at the Symetra Tour's Danielle Downey Classic in Rochester.

To the surprise of no one who saw her limping her way home to an 11th place finish at the USWO, Michelle Wie has withdrawn from this week's event.

If the field is really weak it is possible Lewis can do well and get her confidence back. Let's hope she doesn't end up on the Symetra Tour.

I don't think the field is that weak...there are still a lot of top pros including the big 3.....but yet it is weak that AJ Eathorne is either the 1st or 2nd alternate...huh???
The biggest issue I see this week will be the repeated Marathon commercials featuring Lewis....ugh. "That's the Spirit"....lol

(see also: NW Arkansas, North Texas Shootout). You can't begrudge Lewis this one, though; it's likely this event would have folded if she hadn't drawn Marathon in to sponsor.

I don't dislike her as much as feel sorry for her. When she was asked about Dumbo, saying "Ive never heard of her" is stupid. Just say, "There are so many great international players nowadays I don't know them all yet. When they get on the LPGA tour I'm always impressed with how ready they are to compete"

This isn't a Stacy thing - so many times I've seen a press conference with someone on the PGA Tour, and when they ask them about a player, like say Tommy Fleetwood, who is doing some really good things on the European Tour, they say "I've never heard of them." I must be the crazy one for having leaderboards of several different tournaments up at once.

HappyFan:
You must have read my mind Sunday afternoon. As I looked at her cap and shirt, I realized that she has five four sponsors that are named after LPGA tour events: Pure Silk, KPMG, Manulife, Marathon, and Mizuno. From a business aspect, for better or worse, she IS the face of the LPGA tour.

As much as I like Inkster and appreciate that she has given time and attention to some of the Korean gals, I do sense this in her from time to time. And Lewis really needs to attend a marketing class to learn how to present herself better. Meanwhile someone like Karrie Webb - I'm not a fan, but I sense a genuine respect from her for players like Se Ri and Hyo Joo Kim.

I see Lydia is only four shots back after day one. Lord Leadbetter's magic touch is helping her regress nicely. I know tour players used to say "If you aren't playing well go see David Leadbetter--you'll get worse."
He and his minions destroyed Se Ri's game and he should be in prison for what he did to Michelle Wie. I hope Lydia wises up soon.

The "old" Lydia would have shot 68 or better on this course...good job by David Wetbedder. The Hulk woke up with a bad back, hit no balls on the range, hit two more clubs into most greens...and leads by one stroke.

Ha Na's round today should say something to other pros. There is no need to hit so many balls in the driving range unless you're specifically working on something. It seems like players rush to the driving range all the time prior to the round for no real reason. Just get a little warmed up and go. Play your game.

Great first round by Ha Na Jang! Let's keep in mind that she won on the KLPGA only a few weeks ago, beating the likes of In Gee Chun and Jung Min Lee in the process. So her game is still there, she needs to remain confident that she can get the job done. It was a good day for the KLPGA star rookies. Sei Young Kim and Q Baek both shot 68s and are just two back, and Hyo Joo, coming off the first missed cut of her career, produced an OK 71. Inbee Park shot a 70 to get off to a solid if unspectacular start. Former champ So Yeon Ryu struggled to a 72; she seems to be in a funk of getting off to a slow start, which makes it harder for her to seriously challenge for the win later in the week when her game starts to come around (as it often does). Go Sisters!!

The Dragon Lady just doesn't get it....even the most casual golf fan knows it's Lead Poisoning....he's just trying to sell more books on the A Swing while destroying another golf prodigy....well done David. Lydia use to be a great wedge player...not so much any more. She also needs to get back to her trademark glasses.
