How long can the SS Feng remain #1 with such a mediocre driving game? Players get criticized for "chasing distance" with off-season changes, but in her case she has nothing to lose. TAIWAN > CHINAYes....Jenny Money's lack of club head speed really showed up in the stats during the event on Sunday. Her ball speed was any where from 135-139 mph...let's divide it by a smash factor of 1.47 and were getting a SS of 92-95 mph. Consider a snip hook on 16 and she was left with a hybrid from long & thick Bermuda into a tough pin position and she was level 8 TOAST....that will always hurt against the more powerful skilled pros. But we've never expected chubby's like SS Feng & Winbee to smash the ball...they are able to win because they aren't MENTAL MIDGETS. Only averaged 234 yds this week, almost 20 yards shorter than what she's averaged over the last 5 years or so. We'll have to see if this was an aberration or the beginning of a pattern.

Ya....I gotta believe 20 less yards is an aberration. The pros really can max out their SS due to proper club fitting and excellent ball striking. For Feng to get 250-255 yds out of a 95-96 mph swing is pure striking.

Shanshan is at a disadvantage with the bombers at courses like Pure Silk and the ANA course setup. However she can hold her own at the majority of the other courses.

On an IG video I posted earlier this month, Mi Hyang had 95 MPH club speed and 141.5 ball speed (1.49 smash)...it was a personal best, which she punctuated with two fists over her head and a "Yay, got it!" When addressing the ball with the driver, there's at least a 2" space between the equator of the ball and the top of the clubface. Clearly, she is catching the ball on the upswing...is a 15.6 deg. launch angle high? The attack angle is 4.1 deg.

Then Winbee would be at the same distance disadvantage at Mission Hills too....Winbee is just behind Feng in driver distance over the last 5 years....but Winbee has won the 1st FAKE major BUT Winbee wins more because she's a superior putter than Jenny Money.

Many LPGA pros have a +ve driver AoA......with less club and ball speed....more launch is required....therefore PGA pros launch the ball lower than LPGA pros. I think the ideal launch angle will differ from player to player. ************************************************************************************ According to Trackman, the average PGA TOUR player has a vertical launch angle of 11.2 degrees, and a spin rate of 2,685 rpm. But that’s with a driver clubhead speed of 112 mph. The average LPGA Tour player, who’s clubhead speed (94 mph) is much more in line with the recreational golfer’s, has an average vertical launch angle of 14 degrees and a spin rate of 2,628 rpm. www.pgatour.com/instruction/2013/11/get-more-bang-from-driver.html

Look for So Yeon to have a new caddy at The Australian Open. Tom headed back to Japan. Hi Mike...hope you are well and Happy New Year. Hmmm...interesting....is Tom permanently headed back to Japan?...and if yes...why? Any rumors who will be the new loop? Mike...I looked a a recent video on youtube.....were you at the most recent International Crown supporting the Oz team? I recently saw the The Skill Code show on Golf Channel featuring Cameron McCormick. How old is Cam?.....assuming Trackman is accurate.....Cam can hit his 6 iron 184 yards...I don't know if it was carry or total distance....it was filmed outside....and a driver carry of 265 yards. With those numbers it would indicate a driver mph of 110 mph....Cam can still generate that much club speed? Was Cam previously a touring pro?...if yes....on what tour?

mr3putt,
I think Tom is back to Japan - still caddying and on the women's tour up there I think. I caddied for Su at International Crown -It was a fun week and gave me a change to see Chicago GC. Cam grew up playing the same course as I did, Eastern in Melbourne which sadly now is a housing estate. He played a bit in Australia, not very successfully and headed to US to learn how to teach.I guess his break came when he crossed paths with Jordan when he was still a kid. That is a picture of Su playing up in Japan at the end of 2016 - I think it was at the LPGA event up there. I think I know who So Yeon's new caddy is - but you'll have to wait until the Australian Open to find out:)

That you, Mike? I followed your group on Friday until the rains came on the 16th hole to halt play for the day.

Let's see. Jiyai Shin rose to #1 in the world averaging 238 yards off the tee. Ai Miyazato rose to #1 in the world averaging 245 yards. Stacy Lewis became #1 in the world despite averaging only 250 yards. Inbee Park became #1 in the world averaging 250 yards. Lydia Ko became #1 in the world averaging 248 yards. So Yeon became #1 in the world averaging 255 yards. Shanshan became #1 in the world averaging 250 yards.
In 2017 Shanshan ranked 12th in ballstriking. No player ranked 1 - 11 averaged more than 265 off the tee. Four players, Sei Young, Brooke, Annie Park, and Gerina averaged between 262 and 265.
Hmmmm. Tell me again why driving distance is so important?

So Yeon, Lydia, Sun Young Yoo, and Stacy all won the ANA, and averaged less than 255 yards off the tee in that season. If you look at the tournament stats, all players except for Inbee averaged 10 to 20 yards longer that week than they did for the season as a whole. The course plays firm.

The SS Feng was one position above DFL in driving distance. Obviously one three-round tournament is not statistically valid...maybe her driver doesn't work well in high winds. Yeah, she's a crazy good ball striker in the rest of the bag. I saw it in person in Bedminster at #14...powder puff drive followed by laser five-iron.
