Boy, this course was brutal today. The groups were out there over seven hours in some cases and the last group didn't even finish the round! Youmin Hwang was brilliant today -- until the 18th, when she hit her iron approach into the water in virtual darkness. She managed to scrounge a bogey and is currently tied for the lead, but more importantly, she finished her round and won't have to get up early tomorrow to finish. Ina's group wasn't so lucky. Carrie Park played really well today, but she insisted on teeing off on the 17th in twilight (the horn blew just before they went, so they had the option to just start tomorrow on the 17th tee or finish that hole. Either way, they were going to have to wake up early). Ina hit another drive into the deep rough (she did that a lot today) but gouged it out and went over the green. Min Byeol didn't even bother to tee off. So tomorrow, Min Byeol will tee off, Carrie is twenty feet for birdie, and Ina gets to start her day with a tricky up and down. What a course. Hwaiting!

It's been fun to watch this so far, but I think they overdid it on the course set up. Players like Ina are unwilling to use driver and are hitting it into the rough even when laying up off the tee. Youmin was more aggressive today, and that's why she did so well, but I don't think that's a winning strategy all week. Meanwhile, groups are waiting all the time. I saw something really odd: the penultimate group played the par 3 11th, then they stepped aside, the last group hit their three shots, then the penultimate group finished putting, then the last group did. So the last group sat and watched the previous group putt out. Didn't help pace of play: Hyun Kyung had a ruling because her ball was stuck in some insanely high rough right next to the green. She didn't get relief and made bogey. Min Byeol faded today thanks again to putting. She missed too many shortish ones and that added up. Ina was clutch on par saves today fortunately. Carrie Park was really solid: she mostly used driver (which usually was shorter than Ina's fairway metal) and placed most of her approaches on the green within birdie range. Meanwhile, defending champ Yewon Lee will miss the cut. She shot an 80 today and didn't make a birdie. She seems to be in a full fledged slump, since this should be a course that would favor her (or at least neutralize the weapons of her longer hitting opponents). Hwaiting!

It is so great to watch You Min Hwang, hasn't mentioned before but I love her demeanor. So graceful, hope the KLPGA holds on to her a year or two.

They finished round 2 this morning. Ina managed two pars. It was a bit tricky on the par 5 18th; she hit into the rough on her second shot, punched out, then hit her fourth to a couple feet for a par save. But Carrie made double, and now Youmin Hwang has a one shot lead over her, with Ina three back. They will be in the final group. 4th place is three behind Ina going into round 3.
Min Byeol bogied 18 and is at 4 over.

A good start by Hee Jeong Lim had an unlucky in the rough on one. Had to pitch out and just missed saving her par. Then had three birdies in a row and Gyeol Park had a hole in one. While I was away Hee Jeong had a bogey on par three five.

Just saw Lim rinse her ball on a par-3 and make a four ... just saw Minji Park go from rough to rough on another hole ... Gyeol Park made an ace. THIS is the kind of golf course the KLPGA's best should be playing almost every week, but doesn't ... play well here and you just might be able to hack it on the LPGA tour.
*******
A course description from the top-100 golf course site:
Augusta National has “Amen Corner” and Blue Heron also has an equivalent – “Heron's Pick”.
Blue Heron Golf Club opened in March 1992 as Club700 Golf Club, which was limited to 700 members. The course was co-designed by American architect David Rainville and local architect Myeong-gil Kim. Rainville came to prominence in the late 1970s when he was in partnership with Billy Casper. The duo renovated the old Torrey Pines South course in San Diego and paved the way for the tournament venue it is today.
Beverage company Hite-Jinro bought Club700 in 2002 and changed the name to Blue Heron Golf Club in homage to a flock of herons that nested nearby. Two years after Hite-Jinro‘s acquisition, the course was renovated to create a more challenging, risk and reward course. The course was lengthened, mature pines planted and even meandering creeks were constructed.
These changes resulted in the birth of a genuine championship venue that has since gone on to host the KLPGA’s major tournament, the HiteJinro Championship. For those left pondering our opening statement, the golfer who best negotiated the final four holes (“Heron's Pick”) during the HiteJinro Championship, won the event and the champion coincidentally went on to claim the title of “Korean Player of the Year”.
*******
Blue Heron is about 35 miles SE of central Seoul. It's not too far from the excellent Blackstone (Icheon) course.
Isn't it nice this week NOT seeing concrete cereal boxes on the horizon in every direction? Or ludicrous one-of-a-kind housing units bordering fairways? Or warehouses positioned behind greens? Or a clubhouse that looks like a huge windowless telephone company switching station? Unfortunately, the KLPGA will continue to play a dreadful man-made fake venue like Best Worst Best Cheongna twice a year because it is good business to do so ... no other reason.

Ina made a nice birdie on the par 3 5th and has moved one shot ahead of Youmin and Carrie. Ina -4, the other two 3 under. Great battle going on!

Human blasted a birdie putt attempt that bounced far off the flagstick, leaving her a tough par saver, which she missed ... Battleship Ina in the lead by one ... for now. Carrie Park and Human almost went swimming at #8.
The BIG news is Suji powering a ball out of the hay at #9 to about 12 feet ... made left-to-right breaker to go -4 on the day and Even overall. They need to show her more ... well, she's in a mode to force the issue. It's too bad Stage 3 LPGA Q-series is not next week, she'd kill it there.

Now they're showing a +9 player ... don't waste our time, please.
Human and Carrie are shooting themselves right out of this tournament at #9 ... and here comes Suji! Stuffed it to about five feet at #10 and made the putt. ... and now she has a good birdie chance at the par-3 11th.

Hee Jeong Lim put two great nines together third round even front nine and minus one back nine. Had five bogeys, but also had six birdies including one on eighteen.

I swear, what did Ina do to offend the golf gods now? Last week, it was Ma Da Som with her 61, now it's Su Ji Kim with her 64. Ina is playing decently given how hard the course is, but man, she needs to sharpen up her irons and wedges. She always seems to have the best lie for her approach and ends up farthest from the pin. She should have had a birdie-birdie finish given how great her drives were on 17 and 18, but she missed a short birdie on 17 and hit a really lackluster third on 18 from like 65 yards. To put in perspective, Carrie Park hit a much better wedge from deep rough and farther. Well, she has one more round to close this deal. It was a long day for her, as she was one of only three people who had to come back early in the morning to finish her round, then wait all day for her final round to start. She came back from three down against Youmin today; hopefully Kim shot her wad today and Ina can seize the day Sunday. It's time to get a win again, Ina!! Hwaiting
