more pics and video on my blog : Belinda Bencic Hands Serena Williams Only Her Second Loss Of The Season In 2015 Rogers Cup SemifinalsBencic Overjoyed As the final point was played in her 2015 Rogers Cup semifinal win against Serena Williams, young 18 year old rising star Belinda Bencic didn’t quite know what to do. Her gaze went everywhere, her hands went to the top of her head. She smiled, she cried. In her post match interview, Belinda could barely find the words to describe what had just happened. The new Swiss Miss had shown incredible fortitude fighting back from 1-5 down in the first set to hand Serena only her second loss of the season, 3-6 7-5 6-4. While it is true that Serena did not play particularly well, you still have to give Belinda her just due. No, this wasn’t the same as when Petra Kvitova beat Serena in straight sets in Madrid. Still, there have been plenty of times where Serena did not have her A game or her B game this year and still won. There have been times this year when opponents had their chance to beat Serena but you wonder if they truly believed they could finish the job. Belinda did not melt when the heat was on. For her efforts, she will take on Simona Halep in the Rogers Cup Final. Most tennis aficionados were looking forward to Serena vs Simona in the final, but maybe the player we need to take a better look at right now is the fast rising Belinda Bencic. more pics and video on my blog : Belinda Bencic Wins 2015 Rogers CupBencic Wins Talk about winning in style. Although the 2015 Rogers Cup women’s singles final ended with a disappointing retirement, in no way does that diminish what Belinda Bencic accomplished this week. She beat former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard, former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, another former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki, another former world number one Ana Ivanovic, current world number one Serena Williams and current world number three Simona Halep. It’s Belinda’s 3rd final and 2nd title since June. There are many young talents on tour at the moment, but perhaps Bencic is beginning to separate herself from the others. Although she doesn’t hit quite as hard as Karolina Pliskova, Sloane Stephens or Madison Keys, Bencic is far steadier and less prone to beat herself. And if you underestimate her, she does have sneaky power. Last year, as a 17 year old, she made a quarterfinal run at the US Open. Depending on her draw, she certainly seems capable of repeating that run this year. BELINDA BENCIC (won 7-6 (5) 6-7 (4) 3-0 retired vs 2 Simona Halep)

more pics and video on my blog: Serena Williams Wins 2015 Western & Southern OpenSerena WilliamsAll the preliminaries are over. Next up for Serena Williams is a shot at tennis history. With her title at the 2015 Western & Southern Open now behind her, she turns her attention to Flushing Meadows and the US Open. Win there, and she captures the calendar year Grand Slam. It won’t be easy. The pressure on her shoulders will likely be greater than it has ever been. And the competition will not just roll over and capitulate. She lost at Rogers Cup to eventual champion Belinda Bencic. Even in winning Cincinnati, she was given a test by Simona Halep, who will be the #2 seed at the US Open. Williams did win the Western & Southern final in straight sets, but it was a tough 6-3 7-6 (5) match where Simona had her chances in the second set to extend Serena the distance. Speaking of Simona, has played a lot of tennis the past couple of weeks, reaching the Rogers Cup and Western & Southern finals. She was scheduled to play in New Haven next week before the US Open, but pulled out with a leg injury. Her leg might be a little tweaked, but rest assured that is tennis talk for “I’m tired and need to be ready for the Major. No need to burn myself out playing too much beforehand.” And while they probably are disappointed at the Connecticut Open, I wholeheartedly agree with Simona’s decision. Take the rest before the Open. 1 SERENA WILLIAMS (won 6-3 7-6 (5) vs 3 Simona Halep)

more pics on my blog: Nike NYC Street Tennis Event Gets 2015 US Open Pre-Tourney Buildup UnderwayRafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Madison Keys, Nick Kyrgios, Maria Sharapova, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Eugenie Bouchard, Roger Federer, Grigor Dimitrov and John McEnroeFor me, a lifelong tennis fanatic, this is the most wonderful time of the year. Wimbledon? Sure, I’m not unaware or dismissive of the sport’s ultimate prize. But it’s not at the top of my list. Even my LPGA fandom didn’t move me to look too hard at the United States Solheim Cup announcement today. Right now, it’s all about my favorite sporting event (outside of the Summer Olympics), the US Open. There will be a lot of sponsor events this week leading up to the fortnight, so it’s fitting that one of the biggest brands in sports, Nike, pulled together an “NYC Street Tennis” event that featured some of the biggest past and present stars in the tennis world. In fact, some of these stars aren’t so warm and fuzzy with each other. Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams…quite a chilly pair with each other. I don’t know how Masha is with ex-boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov, but they didn’t seem too close in the pictures. Nick Kyrgios? Seems everybody is cross with his antics these days. Eugenie Bouchard is very open about not wanting to make friends on tour. Let’s not even get into the complicated relationship between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Ultimately, Masha said it best: Maria SharapovaEugenie BouchardMadison KeysAndre AgassiPete Sampras

more pics on my blog: Maria Sharapova Bloomingdale Pop-Up Store, Caroline Wozniacki At Players Tribune 2015 US Open PartyMaria SharapovaUS Open 2015 pre-tourney sponsor events/parties are continuing with Maria Sharapova opening a Sugarpova pop-up store at New York City’s flagship Bloomingdale’s. I must admit, I’ve actually tried a few varieties of Masha’s candy line and it’s pretty good. Additionally, it’s just great to see athletes expanding their brand beyond sports apparel, equipment and accessories. For all of Masha’s fame, she works really hard at promoting her candy business. The only worry I have is that with some recent injuries, I hope she’s not doing too much before the US Open. Caroline WozniackiMeanwhile, Caroline Wozniacki was out and about at the Players Tribune party to celebrate the 2015 US Open as well as women in sports. The Players Tribune is a media outlet founded by former Yankee’s shortstop Derek Jeter where athletes can contibute articles in their own words (which has it’s pluses and minuses). Sunshine was named a senior editor. I’m not sure what that all means for her, but it obviously isn’t too much of a distraction as Caro was able to hightail it back to New Haven from NYC to beat Alison Riske 2 and love at the Connecticut Open. more pics and video on my blog: Petra Kvitova Wins 2015 Connecticut OpenPetra KvitovaThe final WTA warm-up event before the 2015 USOpen is in the books and for the 3rd time in 4 years the champion of the Connecticut Open is Petra Kvitova. The win marks Kvitova’s 3rd title of 2015 and 17th of her career. It was Petra’s 4th straight Connecticut Open final, only losing in 2013 to Simona Halep. Simona was due to be the top seed this year but pulled out prior to play beginning, leaving 2nd seed Kvitova as the top seed in the draw. She earned her title with 4 great wins. I am quite fond of Petra, so I forgive her for beating my favorite player on tour, Madison Keys, in her opening match after a first round bye. The 2-time Wimbledon champion then beat former Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarters and former world #1 Caroline Wozniacki in the semis. The final was a battle of two Czech left-handers, the first all-lefty Premier level final in two years, and only the 3rd in the last 22 years, as Petra took on good friend and Roland Garros runner-up this year, Lucie Safarova. Lucie SafarovaBoth ladies wore identical tennis outfits, both are tall and both are lefties. It was like watching the same person on both sides of the net. But although Lucie came out strongly, Petra just has more pop on her shots…when she’s on, that is…and eventually took down her countrywoman, 6-7 (6) 6-2 6-2. I’ve said over and over, as others have, that when Petra is on she can beat anybody, including Serena Williams…which she did in straight sets in Madrid this year. Her win over Serena was far more emphatic and convincing than when Belinda Bencic beat Serena at Rogers Cup. I don’t mean to take anything away from Bencic, but Serena helped her out with very poor play at times in the final two sets. Kvitova rolled Serena in Madrid. The problem is, from match to match…heck, from set to set…Petra’s level of play can go from all-time great to sacrificial lamb early round qualifier. Despite winning 3 of the last 4 Connecticut Opens, Petra has flamed out at the US Open the next week, having yet to make it past the 4th round. The last two years, Petra hasn’t made it out of the 3rd round. I really hope that turns around sooner or later. When she plays to her full potential only she…and perhaps a healthy, sharp Victoria Azarenka…have the tools to go toe to toe with Serena without Williams helping them out with a ton of errors. Madison Keys looks like she has the raw tools but they still need to be honed as she continues to develop her game. For now, I would love to see a US Open match between Petra and Serena where they both brought their A games. It would be one for the ages. 2 PETRA KVITOVA (won 6-7 (6) 6-2 6-2 vs 4 Lucie Safarova)

from my blog: Maria Sharapova Withdraws From 2015 US Open Due To InjuryMaria Sharapova leaving practice court SundayAs Maria Sharapova left her Louis Armstrong Stadium practice session at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, she knew something her adoring fans did not. She didn’t feel good about it, but it was apparent to her that she would not return in 2015 to the place where she was a singles champion in 2006. The #3 seed (behind only Serena Williams and Simona Halep) withdrew from the US Open citing the right leg injury that has sidelined her since Wimbledon. I will miss Masha at the Open this year. Sure, there are others regarded as having a better shot to win, but it’s sports…you never know. The expected often happens, but doesn’t alway happen. She shared her feelings afterwards on her website and on Facebook: The clock has hit 4:17pm on Louis Armstrong. I just sat down on the chair, but my eyes are fixed on this little kid, twitching impatiently next to his mom, is she finished already, I have this big fat tennis ball I really really need her to sign and my ice cream cone is melting.
He is one of the couple hundred people watching my practice on the eve of this US Open. It’s remarkable. I ask my coach to take a panorama picture, it’s not one for the frame though. I am surrounded by families, their kids, grandparents. Somewhere in the mix, might even be the coach of my next opponent, scouting. Don’t waste your time, it won’t be me.
Back to the kid, I just want to whisper in his ear, “I am not only finished with practice, but my 2015 US Open is finished without any beginning”. It’s my little secret but I don’t want to let anyone down.
I don’t want to get up from this chair, but I know this is the end of my US Open campaign. I’ve got these eerie invisible elfs floating around my head, is this really an appropriate time for Harry Potter flashbacks? Come back later please!
I’m smiling now because perspective is charming and just fyi, I’m craving that little boys ice cream cone. Guess I’ll just have to find my way through midtown tonight, in search of that annoying truck melody.
In the meantime let’s celebrate what we already have and not what we are missing.
New York City, this wasn’t my year but I will be back!-Maria Sharapova

more pics and video on my blog: 2015 US Open Day 1: Ana Ivanovic Highlights First Round Women’s Top 10 UpsetsAna Ivanovic2015 was supposed to be a big year for Ana Ivanovic. The 2008 Roland Garros champion was coming off a 2014 season that saw her win 4 titles and finish runner-up twice. After another runner-up result to start 2015 at Brisbane, it’s been a bit of a disappointment. So far, no titles. What’s more, despite her best finish in a Major (Roland Garros semis) since she won in Paris seven years ago, she went out in the first round at the Australian Open, the second round at Wimbledon and now the 7th seeded Serbian has been ousted in the first round at the US Open. Sure, she had the misfortune of drawing former Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova, a diminuitive but powerful giant killer, in the first round. So Domi winning 6-3 3-6 6-3 over Ana isn’t a shock, but it still doesn’t explain the entire year. Ana is better than her results at Majors. Since her 2008 Roland Garros title, she has only gone past the 4th round at a Major 3 times in 30 events. She actually has more first round exits (6) over that period. I’m a huge Ivanovic fan, so I hope she plays the fall schedule well…maybe salvages the year with a title or at least a final. Increasingly, it appears as if she’ll have to work on her game in the off season and look to 2016 for a return to good form. Ana wasn’t alone in being a top 10 first round casualty. 8th seed Karolina Pliskova, a big hitter who looks like a future Major winner, will have to wait until the future before fulfilling her promise as she was upset by Anna Tatishvili in emphatic fashion, 6-2 6-1. Also crashing out of the US Open in the first round was 10th seed Carla Suarez Navarro, who lost to 22-year old Czech player Denisa Allertova, 6-1 7-6 (5). DOMINIKA CIBULKOVA (won 6-3 3-6 6-3 vs 7 Ana Ivanovic) 19 MADISON KEYS (won 6-2 6-4 vs Klara Koukalova) 25 EUGENIE BOUCHARD (won 6-4 6-3 vs Alison Riske) COCO VANDEWEGHE (won 6-4 6-3 vs 29 Sloane Stephens)

more pics and video on my blog: 2015 US Open Day 2: Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka AdvanceSimona HalepWith many conceding the top half of the 2015 US Open Women’s Singles draw to Serena Williams, the question for most is whom will she play in the final from the bottom half. First of all, it’s sports…anything can happen. It would be shocking for Serena not to at least reach the final, but it’s not impossible for her to be upset along the way. However, for the sake of argument, let’s say she makes it to the final. Two players I’d love to see her play there would be the #2 seed, Simona Halep, or maybe Victoria Azarenka. Don’t be fooled by Vika being seeded only 20th. That’s due to her being out so long and taking her time to get back in form. She has twice given Serena a good match in US Open finals. Azarenka actually had the ball in hand serving for the match three years ago. If she can make it through, she would be tough…and fearless. Also fearless when facing Serena is Simona, who has given the top player all she can handle in a few of their contests. She even beat Williams in round robin play…and on hardcourt…at last year’s Tour Finals. It’s a long way to go for either of them to reach the final, but I’d sure love to see one of them make it there. 4 CAROLINE WOZNIACKI (won 6-2 6-0 vs Jamie Loeb) LESIA TSURENKO (won 6-4 6-1 vs 6 Lucie Safarova) 20 VICTORIA AZARENKA (won 6-1 6-2 vs Lucie Hradecka) 9 GARBINE MUGURUZA (won 6-2 6-4 vs Carina Witthoeft)

more pics and video on my blog: 2015 US Open Day 3: Madison Keys, Eugenie Bouchard Advance…Both To Face Stern Tests In Third RoundMadison KeysI came into the 2015 US Open with a keen eye on many players. Two, in particular, are 19th seeded American Madison Keys and 25th seeded Eugenie Bouchard. Madison is my favorite active player so naturally I want to see how far she can go and how her game is developing. She has been very impressive in her first two matches. Her 6-1 6-2 win over Tereza Smitkova was marked by great serving and a solid winner to unforced error ratio (19-11), especially for a big hitter. However, up next is a huge test in Agnieszka Radwanska. The Polish star might have slipped to a 15th seed, but make no mistake…Aga is trouble for anybody when she’s on. Futhermore, her “human backboard” style and creative shotmaking often induces errors from big hitters like Maddie when they get impatient. Keys can win, but she will need to plan on being in a lot of rallies and not go for winners too soon in those rallies. Eugenie BouchardEugenie Bouchard’s first two rounds have been much tougher than Keys, squeezing through in a couple of tough 3-setters. But if you consider how rough Genie’s year has been, just winning matches in a Major at this point is a cause for celebration. She was ranked #5 in the world last October. Less than a year later, she’s plummeted to #25. She’s young and I believe in her talent. I think she can and will reclimb the rankings. However, she cannot commit 46 unforced errors (like she did in her 2nd round 3-set win against Polona Hercog) against her next opponent, Dominika Cibulkova. Domi already upset Ana Ivanovic in the first round and if Genie is sloppy, Cibulkova is more than capable of showing her the door. 19 MADISON KEYS (won 6-1 6-2 vs Tereza Smitkova) 25 EUGENIE BOUCHARD (won 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-3 vs Polona Hercog) 23 VENUS WILLIAMS (won 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-2 vs Irina Falconi) 15 AGNIESZKA RADWANSKA (won 6-3 6-2 vs Magda Linnette)

more pics and video on my blog: 2015 US Open Day 4: Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep Looking Strong Early OnPetra KvitovaHere I go again. I’ve been so enamored with the overflowing talent oozing from Petra Kvitova that I often fall into thinking that she’s about to take that next step into being the best player in the world. She will flash that brilliance and then…come crashing back to earth. I’ll admit, as she’s worked her way throught the first two rounds of the 2015 US Open, I am set to believe once more. Not that she’s been overwhelming or anything…her second round 6-3 6-4 victory against 2-time NCAA Champion Nicole Gibbs was more routine than spectacular. But maybe now that Petra’s been diagnosed with mononucleosis, finally giving her answers to why her energy wanes…and more importantly, now that she knows how to manage it…maybe, just maybe this is her year to break through at the US Open. Kvitova has won 3 titles this year, beaten Serena Williams and comes in with a win last week in New Haven. I believe in Petra! (and hope I didn’t just jinx her) Simona HalepBefore Petra beat Serena back in May at the Madrid Open, the last person to beat the top player in the world was Simona Halep. Although overall Madison Keys is my favorite active player on tour, Simona is my favorite player to watch. Although diminutive, her game has certain aspects that remind me of one of my all-time favorites Kim Clijsters, particular the way Halep changes direction on the ball so easily like Kimmie did. Her 6-3 6-4 win over Kateryna Bondarenko wasn’t particularly spectacular, but Simona isn’t the kind of player that routinely powers her way through opponents 1 and 1 over and over. She will get an easy win here and there, but mostly she does what she needs to do to win. I’d love to see the bottom half of the draw come down to either Petra or Simona. We will see soon enough. 11 ANGELIQUE KERBER (won 7-5 6-2 vs Karin Knapp) 18 ANDREA PETKOVIC (won 6-3 7-6 (4) vs Elena Vesnina) 24 SABINE LISICKI (won 6-4 6-0 vs Camila Giorgi)

Eugenie Bouchard looked pretty good beating Cibulkova. Three in a row now, maybe gaining confidence? Big question now - can Mattick Sands pull off the upset of the year?? Up one set! Genie looks like she's getting it back together...needs to take Vinci seriously though...don't let up! more pics and video on my blog: 2015 US Open Day 5: Madison Keys Defeats Agnieszka Radwanska, Sets Up Showdown With Serena Williams; Eugenie Bouchard Outlasts Dominika CibulkovaMadison KeysBe careful what you wish for. That’s how the saying goes. I wanted to see how far Madison Keys could go at the 2015 US Open. I hoped she would make it to a potential fourth round showdown with Serena Williams. What I wished for has happened. Now we’ll see if Maddie can give Serena the kind of tussle she did early on in their 2015 Australian Open semifinal match. Don’t be deceived by Serena’s struggle in the third round to beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The world #1 knows Keys has serious weapons. Serena will be far more mentally prepared for Maddie. Keys looked spectacular in dominating Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3 6-2 in the third round. If Maddie plays like that, she has a chance. Eugenie BouchardEugenie Bouchard has resurrected her year almost with a nice first week run at the US Open. Her last two matches have gone the distance, but in the end she has found a way to win. Once again, in the third round she outlasted the very dangerous giant-killer Dominika Cibulkova, 7-6 (9) 4-6 6-3. Up next is Roberta Vinci in the fourth round. Vinci cannot be underestimated. She is capable of knocking Genie out of the singles draw. However, on power and overall game there is no reason why Bouchard shouldn’t be the favorite to win. If she does win and make the quarterfinals, we could be witnessing the reemergence of the star she looked to be through the first three Majors last year. 25 EUGENIE BOUCHARD (won 7-6 (9) 4-6 6-3 vs Dominika Cibulkova) 19 MADISON KEYS (won 6-3 6-2 vs 15 Agnieszka Radwanska) 1 SERENA WILLIAMS (won 3-6 7-5 6-0 vs Bethanie Mattek-Sands) ANETT KONTAVEIT (won 6-2 3-6 6-0 vs Madison Brengle)

more pics and video on my blog: 015 US Open Day 6: Victoria Azarenka Wins Epic Match Against Angelique Kerber; Eugenie Bouchard Off-Court InjuryVictoria AzarenkaVictoria Azarenka and Angelique Kerber combined in the third round of the 2015 US Open to give fans the best women’s match so far of the tournament. It was a high quality, high drama face-off between two women fully capable of going a long way at this Major. If there is one stat that illustrates just how high quality this match was it’s winner to unforced error ratio. When a player is hitting out and going for winners, an even 1 to 1 ration is considered good. Often, a player like Maria Sharapova will have a winner to unforced error stat that looks something like 21 winners to 20 errors in a two set win. Even if the stat were 21 winners to 24 errors, that’s not bad…depending on when those errors happened. Angelique Kerber is more of a counter puncher who doesn’t rack up big winner stats, but once Vika realized she couldn’t sit back and wait for Angie to make mistakes, Azarenka had to go for winners, Kerber was forced to match Vika’s aggression. Vika finished with a terrific 51 winners to 33 unforced errors. That is fantastic. Angie wasn’t too far behind with 46 winners to 31 unforced errors. In the end, Vika was able to edge Angie at the finish line, 7-5 2-6 6-4. Some think this win marks Vika as Serena Williams’ greatest threat at this event. Let’s wait and see. I’ve witnessed Azarenka play like her former self on a few occassions this year only to follow with less than spectacular efforts. Eugenie BouchardUnfortunately, Eugenie Bouchard has pulled out of women’s doubles and mixed doubles due to a locker room injury. Apparently, she slipped, fell and hit her head. Obviously, I feel badly for Genie, but also I feel badly for her women’s double partner, Elena Vesnina. Unlike her mixed doubles partner, Nick Kyrgios, Elena makes much of her tour money from doubles, so exiting a Major…with a huge amount of money on the line…hurts Vesnina more than Bouchard or Kyrgios. That aside, I just hope Genie is ok. Event medical staff will continue to treat her. A decision, as of this post, has yet to be made about whether Bouchard will play her 4th round match against Roberta Vinci. 20 VICTORIA AZARENKA (won 7-5 2-6 6-4 vs 11 Angelique Kerber) JOHANNA KONTA (won 7-6 (2) 6-3 vs 18 Andrea Petkovic) 4 SABINE LISICKI (won 6-4 4-6 7-5 vs Barbora Strycova) 22 SAMANTHA STOSUR (won 7-5 2-6 6-1 vs 16 Sara Errani)
