Everything is so much easier the second time you do it. The day started with the short walk to the ferry terminal to pick up the bus after first stopping at the patisserie opposite to get a very nasty ham and cheese baguette for breakfast. My wife had some work to do so I was on my own - exactly how I like it!
Arrival at the course was fine and I just got ahead of what seemed like a coach load of Korean fans. Of course I have nothing against Koreans but I do despise coach loads of people getting in the way. I decided to flit between hole 18 and hole 5. I saw Jenny Shin’s group on 5 and there were only two of them. I guess Jenny’s mind games with the Indian girl on day 1 had caused a meltdown and she was too afraid to return for the Shining part 2. Two groups back was Yewon Lee and she got a decent par 3 on 5 but she was by that stage already three over.
I then headed to 18 and picked up the Jin Young Ko group who were going to finish on hole 9. There were an around 20 or so following this group which also contained Ally Ewing and Yamashita from Japan. JYK was playing well and she was picking up plenty of birdies. It almost looked like she was heading for the lead when a 3 putt on 8 derailed her albeit she finished with birdie on 9. I don’t know the JYK entourage but I’m sure her parents were there as a middle aged Korean lady looked the spitting image of Jin Young. Does JYK have a female manager/fitness coach. By all accounts she’s a good looking girl and for a moment I thought it was JYK’s instagram glamour posse. She passed extra rainwear to JYK’s caddie as a rain shower passed by.
I had a brief diversion to see Minjee, Celine and Brooke on hole 8. The French fans were very partisan and I don’t think Minjee was enjoying it that much.
After watching JYK’s group finish I headed back to the village and followed Yewon on hole 15. You could tell she was struggling. She just seemed so tiny out on the course. I then bumped into one of the Flying Dumbo fans I saw at the British Open last year. I told him about my predicament of having booked this trip up months ago in the expectation I would earn enough reward points to be awarded a Flying Dumbo cap. He knows her manager Justine so he’ll put a good word in for me if In Gee is back for the Scottish and British Opens. He said she’s on course to be back for the Canadian Open, assuming the neck spasms subside.
My wife then turned up at lunchtime and after a quick bite we headed out to pick up Amy, Nelly and Yuka again. Nelly was not having the best of it on the greens as some great approach shots invariably lead to shortish birdie opportunities being missed. Amy was ticking along nicely with pars until her approach into 13 hit the flag and she gobbled up the birdie. Yuka was heading out.
The skies were getting darker and then as the first rumbles of thunder were heard the hooter was sounded with Amy and Co about to tee off on 15. Off we trotted to seek shelter back in the cafe close to hole 5. We spoke to a nice female marshal who was at hole 16 yesterday when Jodi got the hole in one and the Porsche car. She said her caddie seemed to be more excited than her!
It became clear that bad weather wasn’t going to clear quickly so we headed off around 6pm back to the shuttle bus. We managed not to get very wet thanks to our gortex jackets and umbrellas.
After a quick change in our hotel we decided to eat at the best pizza restaurant in town. At the neighbouring table was Alexa Pano and a male friend. They were both enjoying pizza too.
Tomorrow we will get to the course early to see the conclusion of the last groups as we also need to leave mid afternoon to get to Lausanne and our Saturday night date night to keep the wife happy.
