I got to the course this morning around 8:30. So, first allow me to whine a little for a minute. Amazingly, they don't provide maps or pairing sheets any more, the first time I ever ran into that at an event, and I spent the first few minutes wandering around trying to find someone to give me one. I did get a printout from some guy at the pro shop with the pairings, but not having a map was a real hindrance. Yes, it's online, but my phone usually uses up its charge quickly, and sure enough it bricked halfway through today.
Even more inexcusable was the lack of food and COFFEE. They had one food place in a small area near the front entrance, but I couldn't find a coffee anywhere. What's the deal, KPMG? This is Seattle! Coffee is an essential right!
My initial plan was to follow some of the players I've not followed before. I did follow Hae Ran for a few holes, but she didn't seem to be playing well, so I decided to change to Six, who was in a consecutive group after Yu Ji Sung, so I could move back and forth between both.
Now, I don't think Six is going to contend or win this week, but I'll say this. She's really playing well right now, to the point where it would not surprise me at all to see her grab a win sometime soon. I followed her for nine holes, and though she made a couple of small mistakes, they were nothing like the really bad drives or bad irons she was hitting last time I followed her. Tee to green she was solid, and she made several nice putts. She even finished her day with a nifty birdie on nine: hit her tee shot to about five feet and drained it.
I don't recall much about Yu Jin except she smiled a lot. She seemed to be having a good time. And since she shot a +1, she also had a nice day to start her week.
I wanted to go check out Amy Yang, but she always seemed to be as far from me as possible, and I didn't want to take the time to make that long walk. Perhaps tomorrow?
In the afternoon, just as I was finishing lunch, Jin Young's group was teeing off. I had wanted to avoid the Thompson love train (they played together), but there weren't that many folks following them, at least at first, so I figured I'd watch.
Jin Young is not in her top form. Every time she made a move with some good play, she'd make an uncharacteristic mistake like hitting into a bunker or missing a putt that she would normally make. But she hung tough and had a decent even par round. It was a bit irritating following that group, not only because Thompson was having the round of her life, but because the fans were relentlessly there for only her. If I overheard one more guy call Jin Young 'Lydia' I would have freaked (one guy even wondered why she was J Ko on the scoreboard and not L Ko. Uh, because they are different people?).
It feels like Jin Young had a few bad breaks today, too. One example should suffice: on the 16th, both Thompson and Jin Young hit their drives leftward. Jin Young ended up in this thick patch of grass near a bunker; Thompson wound up in a relatively short patch of grass with a clear path to the green.
But the worst break came for Saso. On one hole she hit her drive right into the woods and had to get a drop to get away from a big tree. She was really irritated when she saw the bad lie, slamming her club into her bag. I don't think I've ever seen her react like that. She made bogey.
