Looks like another fairly easy setup, which is a major benefit for Thitikul. She will almost certainly improve her scoring average, and since Hyo Joo is not in the field, she could close or even pass her with a good enough week. TBH, I feel like it's inevitable I'll be disappointed again, but I'm going to keep hoping that Hyo Joo rallies next week and get that trophy. Huge mistake by Hyo Joo; especially because it's a par 70 this week and par 72 next week. If Jeeno shoots -20 this week; she'll win Vare Trophy because she'll lead Hyo Joo by 18 shots going into next week.

Great round one by Jin Young Ko at minus seven, fourteen of fourteen fairways missed only three greens. Hae Ran Ryu five under on her front nine but hit speed bumps on back nine with no birdies one bogey.
In Gee Chun had seven birdies and three bogeys. That's understandable because some of the par threes and par fours are playing long for her 237-yard drives.
A shout out to ex USC Trojan Muni He minus five she needs to improve on that for next year. Gabriela Ruffels not too good with five birdies four bogeys.

Finally In Gee gets a move on. Even after 12 holes. -4 after 18. That’s my lady! And she keeps going on Friday morning... down to minus-7 after 14. Currently the top sister, tied with Jin Young who tees off right now in the afternoon group.

The Sand Save Queen is still on her throne ...
... but for how long? MHL is done for the season ... went 1-for-2, dropping to 63.89%, but increased her lead over Grace Kim (62.96%), who went 0-for-1 in her first two rounds here. The American Gangsta Yin (60.67%) is off this week ... would have to go 8-for-8 at The Globe to pass MHL ... not happening. Boutier bombed out today, but went 3-for-4, boosting herself to 58.46% ... but too far back, would have to go 10-for-10 at The Globe to pass MHL. It's all boiling down to Grace Kim's last six rounds of 2023 to decide this race, although the math works against her by having 9 more attempts this season (as of this moment).

Jin Young struggled a little more in round 2 than round 1, but she's still in the top five and only four behind the leader with lots of time to go. Also nice to see Amy Yang and In Gee Chun make a run; they are t-13th at the moment. Hae Ran really had a weak day, but fortunately made the cut and is still in position to seal the deal on the Rookie of the Year. Hwaiting!

I can’t see Emily the Dane holding on for the next 2 rounds. Good to see In Gee in the mix but my sense is Jin Young or Lilia will make a move today.

Next week's CME will be made up of players who could all say they had good seasons regardless of where they finish there. Here at this tournament, some players had their seasons ignominiously end. A select few:
Su Oh - Possibly my biggest disappointment. Didn't play much early in the season. Only top ten came in June at the ShopRite. Hasn't finished higher than T62 since mid-August. I was always expecting her to turn it around but never did. Still only 27.
Mina Harigae - She finished 2nd at last year's US Women's Open and a big deal was made how it was being held in her home area this year. She did OK there. Weird season, really. When she made the cut, she did so-so. But she missed the cut 12 times, the hardest being here when she stands 98th in CME points. She's 34. I'll be curious to see what her future holds.
Lucy Li - She was fighting to learn the curve of being a professional golfer but struggled at times. Hurt missing the cut here while standing at 106th in CME points.
Yealimi Noh - Really struggled this year especially early on. Earned almost 70% of her year's winnings - and only top ten - over her last three tournaments. Back to the drawing board!

Fair play to Emily. Maybe her new mindset post Solheim will keep her out in front. Lilia is chasing as I predicted and Amy Yang fired a 61. Hopefully Emily and Patty will get into CME next week. Muni He’s double bogey on 18 will likely be costly as she’s set to miss out on making top 100.

Great round of golf by Amy Yang, the lowest score of her career. It's hard to get too excited, though, because yet again they have set the course up to be far too easy and heaps of players are taking advantage. Look at these scores. Just in the top ten, we had a 61, three 62s, two 63s, three 64s, and some losers that only shot 65s.
Basically, since almost no one ever shoots 60 or better, there is no way to make ground up because everyone, journeyman or superstar, can shoot essentially the same thing. If your putter goes cold for nine holes you are toast. I find this incredibly boring, even if it is a player like Amy whom I love taking advantage. And the LPGA keeps setting up courses like this over and over. To them, having lots of first time winners makes the tour look strong. To me, having a tour where truly great players get to show their greatness, even if there are only a few of them, is far preferable.
And when cynics see these scores, they don't think "these girls are good", they think "pitch and putt".
Any tournament, I mean any tournament, where there are more than a couple of 62s in a week is set up too easy. I wonder what would happen if Sunday we ended up with three or four 59s and Annika's vaunted scoring record, her claim to fame, was wiped away at the event named after her?
Is Pedersen a budding superstar? Or is she having a good week with the flat stick, since that's all you really need on this course? Wouldn't surprise me to see her shoot 71 today and get wiped out by a tsunami of 62s behind her.

Looks like Lilia has had her steak again last night. Emily the Dane is not bringing home the bacon.

And congrats also to Amy on a great Saturday round and a great tournament, finishing 4th. And a great hat! Sisters Hae Ran and In Gee also finished strong on Sunday.
Another good tournament for Alison Lee. And it was great to see Aza finish the year strong to easily keep her card. She nearly qualified for next week...
Tavatanakit, Pagdanganan, and Steph Kyriacou did what they needed to do, so we'll see them next weekend.
Really felt for Pedersen. One of the most heartbreaking scenes of 2023, watching her go from the sand to the water on 18. You couldn't blame her for the way she shoved her club back into the bag...
We'll see Sarah Kemp next weekend but not Sarah Schmelzel... another heartbreaking near miss...

HappyFan Both Jeeno and Hyo Joo are now tied; they're both -23 strokes against par 70; although Jeeno is percentage lower because she played less rounds.
