My field rating for this event is a very low 32%, down from 37.5% My breakdown is just 30% from the LPGA Priority List and 34% from this week's Rolex Rankings. This tournament only allows 43 players from the LPGA tour to participate. The reason the field rating is even as high as it is, is that eight of the 35 non LPGA members teeing it up are ranked in the top 100 of the Rolex Rankings this week. The only top ten player teeing it up this week is Hyo-Joo Kim.
Other Stuff: Celine Boutier's victory this past weekend was the 4th for France (all by Boutier) tying that country for second place with Australia and South Korea, who also have four wins. The USA has wrapped up the 2023 title with nine wins already this year. Boutier's win was the third consecutive tournament to be decided by a playoff, and the twelfth this year. Atthaya Thitikul's top ten finish this past week was her 12th of the year. No one else has more than nine. She has wrapped up the top ten title for the second consecutive year!
In the very important race to the CME Globe where it is imperative to finish in the top 100 to have full time playing privileges next year: Emily Kristine Pedersen wrapped up a spot, moving up from 90 to 83. Gina Kim may have wrapped one up also, moving from 94 to 91. It is also important to finish in the top 60 in the Race to the CME Globe, as only the top 60 players are allowed to compete in the CME Championship later this year. That tournament has a 2 million dollar first prize. Notable movement this week: Jasmine Suwannapura (84 to 59) and Gemma Dryburgh (70 to 60) are now in the top sixty. Patty Tavatanakit (59 to 61) and Eun-Hee Ji (60 to 63) are now on the outside looking in.
There was quite a bit of movement from LPGA players in the Rolex Rankings this week that is worth mentioning: Lilia Vu, after 5 weeks at number one (nine weeks in her two appearances at the top this year), falls to #2. She is replaced at the top by Ruoning Yin by the smallest of margins. Celine Boutier makes the most important move this week, jumping up from 5 to 3. She is now just a stone's throw away from the top. Atthaya Thitikul moves into the top ten this week jumping from 13 to 9. Rose Zhang continues charging up the rankings, leaping up from 32 to 26. Alison Lee, winner on the Ladies European Tour this week, rises from 41 to 37. Chanettee Wanasasaen vaults up from 59 to 49. We had some big moves outside the top 100 also: Peiyen Chin hurdles from 161 to 123. Alexa Pano surges from 130 to 124. Jasmine Suwannapura catapults from 187 to 125.

The PGA had the ZOZO. The LPGA has the TOTO. The Champions Tour should have the NONO.
Good night everybody!

MHL all over the joint, but just made eagle-3 at #17 to reach -4.

The Known Korean just got it to -4 thru 14 holes ... started at #10, so they haven't shown her ... but, she's with Fassi, so she might appear later.

Fur-oo in yellow shorts tonight (EDT, GMT-4 for me). Bright fluorescent yellow tinged with green! As soon as I saw her on the broadcast, I yelled, "There's Ayaka!" and my wife said, "What a terrible color! And her socks don't match!"
Many golfers ought to be making hay for the CME rankings in this less than strong field. A few are... Yuna, Yan Liu, Valenzuela, Eun-Hee who is currently the top sister, MHL who finished birdie-eagle-birdie, Suwannapura. Lauren Coughlin is trying. Others are squandering the opportunity... Andrea Lee, Sarah Schmelzel, Celine Borge, you are going the wrong way, did your caddy give you bad advice???

The play-by-play guy Ewan Porter is really good ... an ex-touring pro with a lot of swing doctor commentary. I doubt Gemma Dryburgh ever expected a comparison to Victor Hovland.
Fernando is still the leading Stanford Cardinal, despite all the fawning over The Zhangster.

And Nasa birdied 18! "All four Japanese stars" are tied for the lead according to the announcer (is that Ewan Porter, Phil?) They're even showing In Gee! Jenny, MHL, and Eun-Hee in good position. Also Seon Woo amd Hana Lee. Sisters!
But don't get too excited, keep in mind as I texted to my daughter a few minutes earlier, "I'm watching an LPGA tougnament named after a toilet..."

These announcers are so honest. The female announcer (Trish?) just stated of Hannah Green, "missed a few horrible putts today..." Hannah looks good and reminds me of my "Anna Lynn" not to be confused with the LPGA "Anna Lynn" aka 안나린. (Narin An)

When I look at Iwai from a distance, I think that it's one of the Jutanugarn sisters. They love to wear red and black. But they're not even here in Japan...

JLPGAers made a statement by being 10 of the top-20 players on the Round One leaderboard ... let's see if they can maintain that.
Erika Hara in the unenviable position of trying to win her way onto the LPGA
After playing with Mone Inami, MHL gets SW Bae and Shoko Sasaki on Friday.
Kokona Sakurai got a lot of TV coverage playing with Dryburgh and The Shinster

Round 1 Meh. I watched a few minutes, saw In Gee's only appearance this week (I'm sure she will be nowhere near the cameras the rest of the week), and went to bed shortly thereafter. I think that's it for me watching any more this week. It actually makes me a bit peeved, because we could have had a chance to see Yewon, Min Byeol, Youmin and all the gang a few weeks ago at the BMW, but that didn't happen. Meanwhile, a LOT of JLPGA players get to play this field. The LPGA should at the least restrict their number to a few if they are going to completely exclude the KLPGA. And to top it off, Hyo Joo played like crap, further damaging her Vare chances. Well, best of luck to the Koreans the rest of the week. I'm expecting nothing, so anything good that might actually happen would be a bonus. Hwaiting!

About 260 pics have been posted online between two sources so far and MHL is in none of them ... even though she just made four straight birdies and trails leader NASA by one shot.

Yeah, the leaderboard is wall to wall Japan, they have the home country advantage, punctuated only by MHL and Xiyu Lin in the current top 10 which are minus-9 or better. Then most of the minus-8 scores are Japanese as well although Jenny Shin represents the sisters there. Top American currently Lauren Coughlin (Go Lauren, you're on the edge of making the CME!) followed by the 'new kid' Rose.
Every time they show the promo for next year's Solheim, I am glued to it to the end. Are they going to show the version with Stacy and Rose, or my favorite, the version with Nelly and Lilia?
These announcers are great though, they tell it like it is, they don't pull punches...

From the YouTube clips I’ve seen you’ve got the best commentators like Trish (no BS) Johnson. Says it how it is. It’s tough to see my fave In Gee towards the back. I think she needs a good winter off, crack on with her painting and reset for 2024. I hope she knows I’m planning my summer holiday to France and Switzerland next year on the premise she’ll be at the Evian.
