Dori Carter got into this one ... hasn't played the LPGA in 12 months ... hasn't made a cut on the LPGA in 48 months.

My field rating for this event is a poor 40%, way down from 69.5% last year when it didn't follow the Solheim Cup. My breakdown is 47.5% from the LPGA Priority List and 33.5% from the Rolex Rankings. The field will be led by top ten players: Hyo Joo Kim Lydia Ko The field will also include defending champion Atthaya Thitikul, currently ranked No.11. Top ten players not teeing it up this week: Lilia Vu Ruoning Yin Jin Young Ko Nelly Korda Celine Boutier Minjee Lee Charley Hull Allisen Corpuz Monday qualifiers: Gurleen Kaur (USA) -3 Ji Eun Biak (Korea) -2 This is a 54 hole event!
Other stuff:
Minjee Lee's win at the Kroeger Queen City Championship was the 9th tournament this year to be decided by a playoff. Minjee Lee's win was the third for an Australian player this year, tying them with France for second place. The USA leads with eight victories. Yuka Sasso's top ten finish was her 8th of the season. Only Atthaya Thitikul (9) has more.
In the Race to the CME Globe, where it is vital to finish in the top 100 to get into most tournaments next year: Mi Hyang Lee wraps up a spot by jumping from 73-63. Mel Reid surely improved her chances by rising 97-73. Morgan Metraux (107-84), Pavarisa Yoktuan (105-95), Frida Kinhult (112-101), greatly improved their chances. Lauren Hartlage (100-103, Daniel Darquea. fell out of the top 100.
There has been some movement in the Rolex Rankings by LPGA players in the two weeks since I last reported: Lilia Vu takes back the N0. 1 spot this week as Ruoning Yin drops to No. 2. Minjee Lee leaps from 13-7 Patty Tavakanakit rises from 78-69 Outside the top 100: Alexa Pano makes this list for the 4th consecutive week as she rises from 128-115 Mi Hyang Lee (160-130), Peiyun Chien (184-147), Mel Reid (201-154), also made big jumps.

Arkansas dodged a bullet. I can't imagine there is a more underfed ghoul on Tour than Celine Boutier

For end of year CME Race to Globe is it top 60 who qualify? If so this tournament must be a good one for In Gee to get top 5 and score some points.

Okay, I'll mark you down as a "Yes" for believing the story circulating GolfWrx that she refused to play with Hall and Maguire during the PM four ball matches last Friday. Me? I'm not quite buying all of it ... Boutier played with Hall again in foursomes on Saturday (and lost again). Her denial lavishes praise on Maguire ... but says nothing about Hall.
The latest dirt:
*********
In case you missed the news, there was massive fire with two explosions that obliterated a golf ball factory in Taiwan last Friday night ... nine dead including four firemen ... very sad.
I'm not familiar at all with Launch Technologies Company ... this name is on the latest approved USGA ball list only once, but I'll bet they made balls for other brands, too ... it seems likely since this former facility looks massive.

I guess Boutier and I just don't see eye to eye. It's still Se Ri's birthday in California.

TV window on Friday 2-5 EDT, so 1-4 local tournament time. I predict a focus on the 1:32 local time threesome, Lexi, Leona, and Yuka Saso. Obviously, anyone else who is having a hot round. Sister Amy Yang in a 12:59 local time group with CW "latest new kid in town especially after Rose floundered in the Solheim" and the underrated/ignored Lauren Coughlin. Amy's hat always draws attention; maybe they should mention that her golf entering the Walmart is CME #33? Old Ryu and New Ryu at 1:10 with Celine "I'm just here to golf; not to listen to my caddy or playing partners" Borge... more power to you, Celine! Go sisters! This week is a legitimate competition, admittedly not a strong competition as Tony has pointed out, but at least everyone is allowed to compete unlike the Solheim.
Maybe I'll update my "new kid in town" comparison between Alexa and Rose. Since Alexa won the Handa against a pathetically weak field, she has outperformed Rose in every tournament that both of them entered. Rose was a captain's pick for Solheim as she deserved to be. but did not have much success. Can't imagine that Alexa would have done any worse... They are both in the Walmart so let's wait and see what happens... EDIT: Only Alexa in the Walmart this week. (Channeling the 'real Haney')

I guess Boutier and I just don't see eye to eye. It's still Se Ri's birthday in California. Happy birthday Se Ri! It was her birthday here in Michigan too! Sisters!
And there should be a REAL "Worldwide Solheim" where all golfers around the world had teams where they were allowed to compete, and Se Ri or In Bee should be the captain of the "Asia" team...

You'd think MHL (-1) could figure out something to use when she watches playing partner Cowan(!) shoot -6. I guess it doesn't work that way.
**********
The looper list has a blank space next to (UC)LA Law (-5) ... I'm drawing a blank on this person; past pics of Law show a succession of guys on her bag. Maybe the change did her some good ... something better when you're #148 on CME.

I was curious as to how playing in the Solheim Cup might affect who showed up here and for those that did, how well they would play. I didn't figure out that it would affect the announcing team as well. Karen Stupples and Grant Boone did their commentary from a studio at Golf Channel HQ. And there was only one on-course commentator who followed the featured group Haneymademedoit mentions above. That was 40 minutes in, too.

Ten players tied at T2, including the EMP. Maybe she was was inspired by playing with major champ Bam Bam (T26). Winning this little 3-rounder would go a long way to solve a lot of problems for KT, including becoming a triple Olympian and cementing her CME standing.

Really good rounds by Hae Ran Ryu clean card seven birdies and Jenny Shin clean card six birdie on this birdie fest. Hae Ran Ryu hit all fairways and all eighteen greens.
Jeongeun Lee6 had five birdies no bogeys through eleven holes but made two late bogeys.

And there was only one on-course commentator who followed the featured group Haneymademedoit mentions above. That was 40 minutes in, too. Yes, interesting observation. Another way that the Solheim affected coverage... Lexi was successful at the Solheim; she, Yin, and Khang kept USA afloat against the nearly unstoppable Maguire and Ciganda. So, the coverage on Friday transitioned from the status quo of recent years, Lexi is struggling but she's the popular 'golden American girl' so we will show her 1/4 to 1/3 of the time no matter how she's struggling. Since Lexi continued to be hot, Friday's coverage was "all Lexi, all the time." Her threesome partners Maguire and Saso also benefited from lots of tv time, but honestly, did the Golf Channel analysts or commenters spend extra time breaking down their swings (ok, they did for Saso once that I saw) and did they keep discussing how others would manage to qualify for the CME or whether others would need to use an exemption to keep their tour card if they finished outside the top 100?
After the tv coverage window ended, what can I say but "Hae Ran, the new Ryu!" Zero others but her on top of the leaderboard; zero coverage of Hae Ran on the broadcast...
For some reason, Minami Katsu got a decent bit of coverage on Friday. She ended the day minus-4. Her name is a bit too short to get the Harry Kalas effect. (I know Phil, it's incorrect accenting or emphasis in the native language, but we agree to give Harry slack in that regard. "MA-ri-a-no DUN-can." "MICK-ey Mor-an-DI-ni." I sometimes imagine Harry's voice even for players who weren't on the Phillies, "a-RAM-is Ra-MIR-ez," who played for Pittsburgh and Chicago among others.)
Whom will we see on Saturday afternoon, in addition to replay of Lexi's morning performance? Bet we see the threesome of Thitikul, (the old) Ko, and Kang. Also, here's another group that may attract cameras, Fassi, Hannah Green, and our currently CME #5 SISTER Hyo Joo... ok, Fassi and Green will attract cameras, Hyo Joo will need to shoot minus-3 or better on her first nine to get on tv.
Call out to las sudamericanas, Uribe de UCLA who's hanging above the cut line, CHEER FOR HER ALL YOU BRUINS FANS about to join the Big Ten, and rookie Sofia Garcia la Paraguaya who is T11 only three strokes off the lead. Continued personal heartbreak for me with Plata, la espartana colombiana, she's one of ten golfers who trail even Dori Carter... and who is Cindy LaCrosse, she trails Carter by six strokes after round one! If I was a betting man, I'm not, I'd put big money on Plata to finish ahead of LaCrosse on Saturday as both miss the cut...
