KT & Matilda are paired together again, trying to rekindle some of that Dow Great Lakes magic. Now if they can only be allowed to play best ball, maybe they've got a chance. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cwfi0K5Rglu

My field rating for this event is a very solid 69.5 %, way way up from 32% last year. My breakdown is 78% from the LPGA Priority List and 61% from the Rolex Rankings. Eight of the top ten players in the world will be teeing it up, and fifteen of the top twenty. The field will be led by top ten players: Lilia Vu Nelly Korda Ruoning Yin Lydia Ko Hyo Joo Kim Allisen Corpuz Charley Hull Brooke Henderson Top ten players skipping the event: Jin Young Ko Celine Boutier Other players skipping the event include: Minjee Lee Leona Maguire A Lim Kim Eun He Ji Cheyenne Knight Amy Yang Anna Nordqvist
The Local qualifiers were: Riley Reynolds -4 Chanattee Wannasaen -4
Other stuff: Megan Khang was the 9th first time winner this year. Last year there were a record breaking 11 first time winners. Megan Khang's victory this past weekend was the third straight for an American player, and 8th of the season. No other country has more than three. The eight victories for the USA matches last years win total. No other country had more than four in 2022. Megan Khang's victory was the 8th this year that was decided in a playoff.
In the important Race to the CME Globe, where finishing in the top 100 will get players into most tournaments in 2024, there were some notable changes: Lucy Li jumps into the top 100, moving from 110-99. Soo Bin Joo falls out 99-101. Lauren Coughlin wrapped up her spot for next year jumping from 80-65. Other players that still have some work to do, but have measurably improved their chances are: Mi Hyang Lee 94-77 Apichaya Yubol 95-83 Jeongeun Lee5 is still on the outside lookin in, but moved up from 123 to 104.
There wasn't much movement in the Rolex Rankings this week as most players went up or down just a few spots. The only ones worth reporting are: Megan Khang leaps up from 28-13 Sei Young Kim moves from 50-44 There were some bigger moves outside the top 100: Lauren Coughlin 136-108 Lucy Li 142-126 Alexa Pano 169-146 Mi Hyang Lee 236-193
The Solheim Cup rosters were announced this week with Team Europe sporting three Solheim rookies and Team USA five. Team Europe rookies: Gemma Dryburgh, Maja Stark, and Linn Grant. Team USA rookies: Lilia Vu, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang, Andrea Lee, and Cheyenne Knight. Team Europe (playing at home) would seem to have a huge advantage in experience. Solheim records for Team Europe 61-43-14 Solheim records for Team USA 24-26-13. I will have much more on this subject in weeks to come.

Interesting to guess which threesome might be the 'featured group' on Thursday, in the TV window of 6-9 EDT which corresponds to 3-6 local time in Portland.
In Gee Dumbo, Brooke, and Lexi tee off at 12:59 local time. But if they are floundering, Andrea Lee, Thitikul, and Lilia "I love you" tee off at 1:10. And also at 1:10 on the alternate tees, Corpuz, Kupcho, and Jenny Lin. Would any of you have guessed, at the beginning of the year, that Corpuz would have been the highest CME rank of the threesome?
Some other solid groups in the afternoon as well as in the morning. I appreciate Tony's field rating each time. Thanks for providing this forum with so much useful and interesting information prior to each tournament.
I gotta laugh... I teach at a small university or college and each year I 'volunteer' to teach the 'first year seminar' for new freshmen. On Monday, I had to meet with all of my 20 new students for advising. I noticed that one of them was on the women's golf team. We are D3 so it's unlikely that she would ever get to professional status. On the other hand, who knows, one of the male students in my major department won the Jack Nicklaus award for outstanding college golfer at the D3 level about three or four years ago... I bet the gal was shocked when instead of asking her about her courses or something else academically related, among my first words to her were, "so, who's your favorite LPGA golfer?" (She said Paula Creamer. I told her that my recent favorites were the Korean golfers and among the Americans, Jen Kupcho and Lilia Vu...)

Caddie list is out ... looks like Morgane Metraux dumped Vern Tess, as he is now with the less accomplished Su Oh ... although she is only seven spots below MM for CME Points. Metraux picked up Taneka, who is available while Amy Olson is having a kid. With Cheyenne Knight off, Cheeseburger Chad is going with Angela Stanford. The Yangster (semi-retiree) is also off, but her loop Jan Meierling rarely takes a week off ... he's with Ana Belac. I think this is a new combo, Waitwait Zhang with Josh Williams (ex-Lauren Stephenson). This might be a new combo, W. Meechai with Laura Gonzalez Escallon (ex-MA LeBlanc). This looks new, The Ice Cream Princess with Man Bun. Lastly, Monday qualifier Channettee Wannasaen is employing Porani Chutichai who had a win on Japan's big tour in 2016.

I missed just over an hour of the beginning of Friday's telecast... tuned in just to see Lexi and Brooke somewhere around 12 or 13. They seemed to be one of the featured groups "as predicted." When the telecast persisted in showing only Lexi and Brooke, not In Gee Dumbo who was the 3rd member, I thought, wow, Dumbo must really be having a bad day? Of course, no, when I checked the leaderboard, Brooke was minus-4, Lexi was minus-1, and In Gee was minus-2 (it was before her disastrous double on 14 at which point I was happy they weren't showing her...) They did cover Dumbo on a few later holes so it was great to see her make that long birdie putt on 15.
They also followed Andrea Lee, Thitikul, and Lilia "as predicted." Total heartbreak for me when Vu three-putted from around five feet or less on 13 to turn what the GC announcers seemed to have already conceded to be a birdie into a bogey. "Lilia Vu, I still love you..."
Had walked to the kitchen to refill my coffee cup and was heading back to the broadcast... before I got close enough to the tv to tell what was actually going on, I saw a flash of bright fluorescent yellow and yelled, "AYAKA!"
Retraction of a comment I made in a post on last week's CPKC board. "On to Portland... has to be the weirdest sponsor logo in LPGA tournaments and possibly all of pro golf. Totally disturbing!" CORRECTION: Somehow I missed that 'AmazingCRE' (was that how it was spelled?) is no longer the title sponsor of this tournament or apparently a sponsor of any kind. It is now merely the "Portland Classic" with a tasteful logo representing the 'Rose City.' So I am admitting my error with the usual explanation, "I must have been 'channeling' the real Haney to make such a lame comment... how wrong!"

Round 1
Another terrible week in the making. So much for momentum from last week.
I'm actually going to be in Portland this weekend, so here's what I'm going to do. If In Gee and/or Six make the cut, I promise I'll go to one of the weekend rounds and cheer them on, even if they are in last place (and might watch a little of whomever else also might be in the hunt). If they both miss the cut, I'm blowing it off. I have no idea what I will end up doing. I could see it going either way to be frank.
In any event, I'll have fun this weekend even if I end up completely tuning out the golf. Hwaiting!

Yep, round 1 a bit of a non-event for our Korean sisters. I can imagine the networks will go all-in for Nelly-centric TV coverage. Very surprised to see Muni He so high up the leaderboard - I thought she just followed her F1 driver boyfriend Alex Albon around the world and just posted on Instagram.

I saw Sung Hyun Park at minus and was pretty happy, because she has struggled. However after looking at the stats she hit only eight greens with twenty three putts. But still a minus four remain a good start no matter how she got it.

That's what I find so annoying. Thursday we got Lexi and Brooke-centric coverage as I had predicted. In Gee was in the same threesome but her coverage was minimal. Sisters only get on tv when they are leading or nearly leading. Lexi was mediocre, better than many of her recent results, but she still ended up below the projected cut line after round 1. From the tv coverage, you would have thought that she was near the top of the leaderboard...

For photos from these tournaments I use Getty Images. Are there any other sites that post tournament photos? I expect the answer is "no" with the LPGA having a tie-in with Getty Images. For KLPGA tournaments I've found Park Jun Seok who posts quite a bit on Instagram.

There is a skull after 'Amazing' and the 'C' is backwards ... don't you have those characters and symbols on your keyboard? I haven't seen their hideous commercials in a while ... Paphangkorn still wears that brand.
