Su Ji sighting, started -3 on the back nine ... don't let Hans and Franz distract you from exiting the minor leagues in one swoop.

Beautiful first round by Su Ji and Min Ji. Min Ji is actually perfectly situated after the first round. No need to go low on day one; just put yourself in position to make a move on days two and three. Jin Young was slightly distracted by the German teen, but 1 under is not a bad start; I was hoping for 2 under before she started, but 1 under is fine. Her starts have been her big bugaboo, and going under par on day one should calm the waves and get her ready for better tomorrow. Noja shot +4 btw while Furue was -2. Tell me again how this pairing made sense? So Mi played fine on the front nine but is struggling on the back. Would love to see all three KLPGAers make the weekend, but she needs to right the ship in a hurry. Hwaiting!

I'm guessing Gimee's suitcase finally arrived ... her game certainly did.
Impressive day for Su Ju considering Castren went off the rails on her second nine and MacLaren stunk all day.

Round 1 All in all a good day, with some exceptions. Lee6 struggled, and In Gee has pretty much put herself out of this one (she could possibly make it up, but she almost never contends without a great first round, and that didn't happen here). So Mi was +4, but I'm hoping she can still make the cut at least to make this trip worthwhile for her. In the afternoon we got 3 more 67s: Hae Ran, A Lim and Eun Hee Ji joined Su Ji. Exciting to see all of them in the hunt. Sisters hwaiting!

Great starts for Su Ji Kim, A Lim Kim, Hae Ran Ryu and Eun Hee Ji at minus four.
A lot better first round for Min Ji Park at minus two than the last Major. She said on Golf Digest Korea that she is aiming for at least a top ten.
So Mi Lee said that she got tired on the back nine of the Queens Tournament. Still, she is listed for the Samdasu Tournament next week. Maybe she will have a comeback like Min Ji Park did in the Open.
So Yeon is having a tough time off the tee lately. Not only short at two hundred thirty-five yards average but hit only five fairways.
Jeongeun Lee6 stats wasn't too bad except for thirty six putts.

In Gee Chun round 1 highlights.
Looks like the same stuff we've seen all year: she missed a few fairways; got some bad breaks (that fairway bunker shot they showed at the start was right next to the lip, for instance); had some less-than-stellar approaches; and scrounged out some great short game to keep her head above water.
Nothing terrible, but nothing inspirational. Her par 5 ninth seems like a good example: she laid up into a terrible downhill lie in the rough, from which she could not give herself a decent birdie try and had to settle for par.
In short, if she can just throw in two-three more birdies and otherwise plays the same way, she could get top tens. But if she could also have a great round as well, she could challenge for wins. I don't expect it at this point, but how great would it be for her to finally in 2023 shoot a GREAT day two where her long game is setting up fantastic birdie chances? Now or never, Dumbo!

Alison Lee's Friday morning start at the '23 Open was painful to watch. But she was super kind to the USGA squares and was limber slipping into her white wind pants.

17 of 21 sisters above the projected cut line after round one. But eight of the 17 are at +1 right on the projected cut line so they need a solid round two on Friday. Six is really struggling but I will always support her, and yes, with her history it's possible that she could go minus-6 on Friday and make the weekend. Not very likely, but not totally impossible. That's my Lee6!
Phil, you had accurately mentioned in a previous thread that Lilia Vu ("I love you") had slumped after her two wins earlier in the year including winning a major, the Chevron, resulting in gaining some sponsors. (I want so much to call it the Dinah Shore, or at least the ANA.) I agree that she's slumped, but I'm not so sure that she's drowning in sponsors after that success. The only logo I see is Kingston Fury on her visor. I had no idea what this sponsor was; for some reason I assumed that it was a Canadian minor league hockey team which was totally wrong. After I googled the name then I discovered it's actually a computer hardware supplier of RAM memory chips. Why aren't any big name sponsors supporting Lilia? She has twice as many wins in the last six months than Lexi has had in the last four and a half years!
Also nice to see Angel Yin successful in round one, T6, minus-4. She deserves some sponsors too!
Go sisters, Lilia, and Angel!

I only saw one of them "in uniform" at KPMG, accompanied by two plainclothes associates.

Dumbo is careening all over the place, but is only one shot off the projected cut line with four holes left.

Watched most of the 9:30 to 11:30 GC segment ... the par-3 14th is a real Gong Show, almost everyone is getting killed there ... but, I'm not objecting, it's a (bought and paid for) Major, right? MHL sinking faster than the cut line. Furoo went full neon blob today. Boutier has always been a nifty ball striker, which came in handy with all the recovery shots she had to hit today ... and she was a little lucky, too ... but, I can see her winning this thing.
Su Ji blew a tire, but someone should tell her that a top-10 gets her into next year's Evian.

MHL must be playing hockey golf (hooking and slashing) ... fortunately, the cut line looks solidified at +4 and she's at +5 with four holes remaining (two of them are par-fives).
*******
Shibuno Fever ... I count four spectators disregarding the marshal's instructions.

Scoring wasn't good for the "Sisters." today lots of over par scores. So Mi Lee was the worst at plus twelve, but she gets a pass because she is worn out. At least she will have more rest before the KLPGA Tournament next week.
Hae Ran Ryu is only three out of the lead, Jin Young Ko at minus two is not out of it.
A top ten is doable for Su Ji Kim and A Lim Kim. Min Ji Park and In Gee Chun with good weekends can also get a top ten.
One thing that I like about In Gee Chun, even though she doesn't get a lot of top tens. She has played the pretty much the same clubs with the same swing. So she has been pretty steady lately. Even with her slump she didn't look for a quick fix. As the old saying goes "dance with the one who brought you".
Not sure what's going to happen with So Yeon going forward. She missed only two fairways but hit only six greens. Seven bogeys a double and no birdies.
The difference in Jeongeun Lee6 even par today plus seven first round, is 36 putts, 24 putts.

The difference in Jeongeun Lee6 even par today plus seven first round, is 36 putts, 24 putts. "Dance with the one who brought you" is good advice not just in golf but life in general.
Lee6 didn't pull it out but if she'd played half as good yesterday as she did today, +3 or +4 yesterday, she'd be golfing this weekend. I agree that the difference today was her putting, but she was also "the more things change, the more they stay the same" Six. Most golfers who shoot an even round have two or three birdies and the same number of bogeys with mostly pars. Today's even round for Six: six birdies, four bogeys, and one double. I did take consolation in the fact that Six beat six of the seven amateurs in the field, after trailing five of them after Thursday. She also beat Maja Stark, Danielle Kang, and Matilda Castren, among other recently successful names. (Not that it meant anything but pride; none made the cut.)
14 of 21 sisters made the cut, with MHL and Jiyai just pulling things out at the end...
What was the deal with Ciganda getting DQ? EDIT: Her group was told that they were out of position on the 7th which was their 16th. They were put on the clock on the 8th. An official assessed a two stroke penalty on the 9th which was her final hole. She appealed but the penalty was upheld. When she signed her scorecard without the penalty, she received the DQ for signing an incorrect scorecard. Biggest excitement in the scoring tent since Roberto DeVicenzo at the 1968 Masters... I wonder if there's any video of Carlota...
Did you see Charley Hull on 18? Putting for eagle, needing a birdie to play the weekend, so she three-putted for a par. Maybe if she didn't play such a heavy schedule... you know, take an unexpected week off to refresh herself... Biggest Friday disappointment was probably Ally Ewing who went from T6 after round 1 to "have a nice relaxing weekend..." Runners-up Hannah Green and Andrea Lee. Patty T hasn't looked this good since the Hanwha, her golf I mean... The Thai contingent seems to take turns contending, almost in a rotation. When Patty is lost, Thitikul is nearby unbeatable. This week Thitikul was down and it's Patty near the top. When both Patty and Thitikul have an off week, then Ariya pops up to the top. Occasionally Moriya or Suwannapura are a contender. The whole team put it together in the Hanwha. Don't ever count the Thai golfers out!
