It looks as though the ESPYs no longer separate women and men golfers. Here are the two categories that involve LPGAers. Both are fairly ridiculous:
BEST GOLFER
Wyndham Clark
Nelly Korda
Jon Rahm
Scottie Scheffler
Nelly Korda? Really? Based on what? Has she had a worse year in her career (assuming this goes back to last July)? What about two-time winner Jin Young Ko? Lilia Vu? Anyone who won a Major in the last year? Terrible choice. And now that they don't have a separate women's category, it looks like one nominee is all they are going to get.
This one is even worse:
BEST CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE
Leon Edwards, UFC – defeats Kamaru Usman by 5th-round KO to win UFC welterweight title, handing Usman his first UFC loss
Nikola Jokić, Denver Nuggets – 2023 NBA Finals MVP
Lionel Messi, Argentina – 2022 World Cup Final – scored 2 goals and scored in the penalty shootout to win Man of the Match and he won the Golden Ball as FIFA’s best player of the tournament
Rose Zhang, LPGA – defeated Jennifer Kupcho in a two-hole sudden death playoff, making history by winning by becoming the first woman in 72 years to win her first professional [HF: sic - the sentence just ends
].
This is among ALL SPORTS, male or female, and Zhang's win makes the final four? Oh come on, that's patently ridiculous. She didn't play well at all in the final round and was handed a win, and that's a brilliant performance? There are at least ten LPGA events that deserve it more. For instance, last year's British (assuming it falls within the date range)? Minjee at last year US Women's Open? Jin Young's two amazing 2023 wins were both more impressive. They are bound and determined to make me root against her with this insane overhype.
