How did Maguire end up in the final group and not Hyo Joo? They both shot 65s yesterday.

Marlee Wierda was doing the weekend sports anchor at 6:30 tonight on Channel 8, and she nailed Furue's name totally. A solid A+. She read the same copy (teleprompter) live again at 11:00 and got it right again. I did not bother to include the video link since it was almost the same, or more accurately, since they haven't posted it yet online. The station also fixed the spelling of her name from "Ayake" to "Ayaka," actually they had already fixed that on Friday's broadcasts. But they lost points for including "Hoo Joo Kim" on tonight's leaderboard. I thought that they had Hyo Joo right last night... On the 11:00 broadcast, instead of showing Hyo Joo as T5, they showed Leona Maguire T5 instead. They also posted a short interview with Leona. I think that the narrative was that Leona had finished 2nd twice so now maybe it's her time.
(Furue pronunciation: very good; "Hoo" Joo Kim spelling, not quite so good...)
Now I will add some other comments on local coverage, since it's unfair to keep calling out local tv when local newspapers have had some misses too...
I live in the extended Grand Rapids metro area but I do not get the print GR Press (newspaper) but instead the local newspaper in my small city of 30,000. We actually have decent sports coverage, I especially commend our sports editor who has received statewide awards. When I opened the paper to the sports section on Saturday morning, I was 'torn' or 'conflicted.' Happy because the paper recognized the most important sporting event in the area was the Meijer LPGA. It basically filled the entire front page of sports, as it should have. Praise to them!
But they devoted almost a full half page above the fold to a photo of whom? Not the leader at the time, Ayaka Furue. Not the defending champion, Jennifer Kupcho. Not last week's winner, Ashleigh Buhai. Not any of the first or second round leaders. No, it was a nearly full half page photo of someone who DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE CUT! You know, Lexi! And I grant that part of the problem, as HF and I noted in previous posts, was the deterioration of media in recent years. The paper used to be printed in the area and had a reasonably late deadline for the print edition. But now it is printed across the state near Detroit due to newspaper consolidation. So Saturday's paper covered the first round on Thursday but not Friday's action, and Lexi was still competitive after Thursday, being only three strokes off the lead. Many others were ahead of her even at that point, but it's difficult to overcome the media's urge for 'Lexi love...'
Also please understand as I have written before, I do not resent Lexi personally and I actually wish her success. She hasn't had success in four years and I believe it's due in major part to media pressure to be the 'golden girl,' the American savior who will vanquish these horrible foreign golfers. Especially Asian golfers with the wrong color of hair and they are way too short. You know, those terrible foreigners like Megan Khang and Jennifer Chang and Alison Lee (I'm picking Lee!) and even though she's not here this week, Lllia Vu (Lilia Vu, I love you!) Terrible foreigners! In case anyone is missing my point, I will be clear that this is TOTAL SARCASM, every one of the golfers I mentioned is as American as you and me, unless you are an international member of Seoul Sisters.
I do not get the GR Press print edition. Their content is available online along with content from many other Michigan newspapers (some but not all articles paywalled) at mlive.com. Since I live near Grand Rapids, when I visit mlive.com, it puts the local Grand Rapids news first on the page. I went there all day Saturday and there was not a single article posted on the Meijer LPGA. Not in sports. Not in news, even though the tournament is the biggest news event in GR this weekend. SAD!
The two biggest statewide newspapers in Michigan are the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News. Can you believe that there are still two competitive newspapers in Detroit? Well, actually no, there were until the late 1980s when they pleaded to the federal government for a supposedly 'limited merger' of only their business operations, not their journalistic operations, under the federal "Newspaper Preservation Act." I'm from Chicago, not Michigan, but I totally took the side of the Free Press because my wife and her family, who were from the extended Detroit metro area, were Free Press subscribers. But now, I just go to both websites, they're the same, I don't even care. (I did care through most of the 80s when the papers were basically at war, the price of the daily edition dropped as low as 15 cents, and the News hinted that they were going to drop it to a dime!) So how's the statewide coverage of a major international golf event in Michigan? Free Press: crickets. I credit the News for including the AP syndicated article, "Amy Yang takes Meijer LPGA Classic lead with third straight 67." I clicked on the comments page to see what people were saying. Here's what it said, "There are no comments yet. Why don't you write one?" Well actually I can't, because I don't have an online subscription to the News, so I can't post a comment.
So that's my local media update. Maybe I was too harsh on the local Grand Rapids channel 8 tv coverage. At least it's decent coverage even if there are mistakes.
Go Amy Yang and Hyo Joo (even if they call you "Hoo Joo") on Sunday. Go sisters! And thanks to all of you members of Seoul Sisters for caring about our little part of the world...

I'm still waiting for someone to say 'Furue in the Fair-u-way'. LOL

I'm still waiting for someone to say 'Furue in the Fair-u-way'. LOL Just don't ask Grand Rapids Channel 8, they're more likely to say "FUR-ooh in the fescue!" when she puts it in the fringe or the rough... Ok, I gotta quit being unfair to them since they've mostly corrected the pronunciation of Ayaka's name on Friday and Saturday. Replacing that error with "Hoo" Joo Kim on Saturday. Rather than making a new post, I'm just updating my previous post on media coverage from earlier tonight, two or three posts above, to encompass 11:00 pm local tv and also newspaper/website coverage.

I am like Jerry Seinfeld's TV mom when it comes to Amy Yang. "How could anyone NOT like this swing?!"

Congrats to Leona Maguire, 2023 Meijer LPGA winner! Hope everyone enjoyed seeing our little corner of the world here in SW Michigan. Back to north Jersey next weekend...

Congrats to Leona, but dear lord I was rooting for everyone else haha. Heartbreaking to see Amy Yang double bogey out of nowhere. If not her, seeing Xiyu Lin finally break through would’ve been incredible. Seeing Ariya back at the top would’ve been incredible too.
Alas, Leona was the best down the stretch. Excited for next week. There are a lot of players playing consistently so well, Hyo Joo, Ayaka, Aditi, Atthaya to name a few.

There's a reason why Amy Yang hasn't won more, today was an example. I didn't watch the broadcast, so I don't know how she got the double bogey. Mi Hyang Lee improved her position for next year after a even par front nine with five birdies one bogey back nine.
A shout out to Na Rin An and Hae Ran Ryu who moved up nineteen spots with six birdies no bogeys round.

There's a reason why Amy Yang hasn't won more, today was an example. I didn't watch the broadcast, so I don't know how she got the double bogey. I can't explain exactly. Right as the last groups hit 16, both my tv connection and also my streaming video online started acting up. The last thing I saw before everything disappeared, Amy was sitting three at the very far edge of the 16th green. I don't know what happened off the tee to put her in that position. Her par putt did not go in, but put her within a few feet (2? 3?) just beyond the hole. The bogey putt would have put her 2 behind (?) going into 17, as I recall. It rimmed around as I yelled, "Oh no! Amy, oh no!" The last thing that I saw, Amy was sinking her 3-putt. I saw nothing of the last two holes due to my technical difficulties, but when lpga.com posted F then I posted the congratulatory message to Leona.
Nice coverage of the tournament on local tv Sunday night. And they even spelled Hyo Joo's name correctly this time, to let us know that she finished 5th. Onward to north Jersey, sisters!

I've been through the ringer once too often with Amy, so I watched just waiting for the bad shot that was going to kill her chance to win. On these super easy courses, you have to basically keep making birdies or you can't win, so I knew one mistake was going to end it.
For those who didn't see, she was playing brilliantly, coming off a ten foot eagle putt to get a share of the lead. She promptly hit her next drive left into a tree, where it ricocheted into the rough. It was makable, but her next shot went left into the same tree and bounced into the tall weeds. I knew it was over then and there.
Whatever, Amy got a third, Hyo Joo a fifth, and Hye Jin had a nice rally to get to t-8th. Hopefully one of these three at least will contend in the next couple of weeks. Hae Ran got to t-20th, and, even better, Six had her first event in ages with four rounds under par. It still wasn't a great week, but anything's better than what she's been doing.
Hwaiting!

Yes, now that you remind me HF, I did not see Amy's 1st shot on 16 due to my technical difficulties on tv and streaming video, but then did see the 2nd shot end up in the tall weeds.
And I was so happy to see Six have a consistent four rounds of solid golf, not great but at least good enough. She and the idiotic Haney were the ones who revived my interest in LPGA and especially the sisters, four years ago.
Baltusrol awaits in north Jersey in a few days...

After a one birdie, one bogey front nine Mi Hyang Lee had a five birdie one bogey back nine, It's significant because she moved from 104 to 86 on CME Group.

My bad about Manon and Man Bun. I couldn't resist the alliteration.
Speaking of smokers, I remember Jenny Rosales puffing away on the fairways.
Leona Maguire just played brilliantly on her back nine. Nice to see Ariya back with a second place finish.
