Round 3 The thing that drives me crazy about Minjee is that she always seems to play her best when the Koreans are doing well. If the leader had been Nelly, I'm sure she would not have put herself in the hunt, but because it was Jin Young... Grrr... Anyways, Jin Young definitely struggled today, but she still managed to hang close enough to give herself a chance. It won't make a difference, this is Minjee's trophy and I suspect there won't even be a battle tomorrow. But I'm hoping that Jin Young and Hae Ran can both play well and get themselves primed for the Majors coming up. Credit to Sei Young for another strong round. Please please don't shoot a 76 tomorrow, SYK! Let's see a top five! A Lim produced a 67 herself, good job! But Hye Jin has fallen and at least so far hasn't gotten back up. Sisters hwaiting!! P.S. They actually talked up Hae Ran quite a bit today, it was nice to see (and long overdue). But that came at the expense of ignoring Jin Young most of the back nine.

Another MSU Spartan who's been seen on the tour in recent years is Liz Nagel. Maybe she'll be at the Meijer LPGA again next month? Thanks for the heads up on Katie Lu. I will have to start following her too. I see that she's from the Princeton area. Is that considered North Jersey or South Jersey? When I lived in Philly, they considered Trenton almost a suburb and thus part of South Jersey. New Brunswick was definitely North Jersey, and Princeton is right in the middle between them.
Didn't know Liz went to MSU ... I saw her a couple of times during Shoprite/Acer week with an A&W Root Beer staff bag, a real work of artistry. She must have cashed in her chips because she hasn't played one round on the LPGA or Epson tour this year.
Some notes I took at a 2013 pro-am with Sara (No "h") Brown:
She explained her habit of picking up trash on the golf course:
I played in the Arizona Junior Golf Association. There was a rule that if you walked past a piece of trash on the ground and didn’t pick it up, you’d get a warning. Do it a second time and you’d get a stroke penalty.
An am asked why she didn’t go to college in Arizona. Sara’s answer:
Amanda Blumenherst and I were leading Arizona junior players at that time...I wanted to go to Arizona U. really bad...I live about four minutes from there and still have strong feelings for the Wildcats...so I talked to the coach and she says, “we’ll let you try to make the team as a walk-on”...didn’t offer me a penny...Arizona St. said, “we’ll pay for your books, but you’re better than that...we have no budget for more”...then Michigan St. offered me a free ride for four years, so I took it...I loved it there and was able to get away from my parents.
****
Right, Princeton is on the dividing line in a commercial sense. Not far below it is the Quakerbridge Mall ... I haven't been to the JCP there in ages, but they have (or had) a heavy amount of Phillies and Eagles stuff.

I bet Minjee has driven through a car wash twice for good measure.

I believe that Liz had some health problems that were affecting her even when she was a star in the Big Ten. The success of State's women's golf program is impressive considering that northern universities are at a huge disadvantage in all spring sports due to climate/weather. Real spring weather starts up here, well, about last week. (We Michiganders call ourselves Michiganders and we call the two major universities "State" and "U of M") Local media up here already beginning to promote the Meijer LPGA Classic next month. Interviews with defending champion Kupcho in the sports news on local tv twice this week. Jennifer had a lot of success in Michigan last year, the Meijer and the Dow team event with Lizette Salas. Kupcho is one of my favorite American golfers but the media seems to avoid her almost like the Koreans and Asians.

The popular saying -- “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain” -- came from a poem written by Boston Post sports editor Gerald Hern that reflected the state of Boston’s starting pitching. Spahn and Sain were dominant -- especially during the pennant stretch -- and the rest of the rotation was unheralded. “First we’ll use Spahn, then we’ll use Sain. Right now that should be a quote for the Korean LPGA golfers "Jin Young Ko and pray for rain." Until some one else step's up and get a win. What a great round of golf, especially the clutch par saves on sixteen and seventeen, topped off with a birdie on eighteen. I was told my Mother Day present wasn't as good as Jin Young Ko win...kidding. https://www.instagram.com/p/CsPfi5aOwNc https://www.instagram.com/p/CsPgYvggpWz

As a not-yet-a-geezer, I prefer the 1970s baseball reference, "Tanana and Ryan and two days of cryin'".
*******
Oh, I remembered another South American, Maru Martinez ... watched her play at the 2003 USWA ... later played the LPGA tour for about 15 minutes.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CsPoAq0t_tQ I guess you couldn't call this Tournament a birdie fest, Jin Young Ko sixty-seven was the only score in the sixties. edit: Madelene Sagstrom scored sixty nine

Fantastic Win #15 by Jin Young Ko! Unbelievable stuff.
Sometimes it's easy to forget just how amazing Jin Young can be when she gets into search-and-destroy mode. For three rounds this week, she was playing excellent golf, but it looked like Minjee Lee, no slouch herself, was playing just a little better. But in the final round we got to see, for perhaps the first time since her injuries, Jin Young in full A-game mode. It was a joy to watch. If you want to know why I get so irritated by birdie fest setups, look no further than this event. Here we had a course setup that could eat you alive if you weren't careful. Anyone coming out of here with a great score really earned it. Today, Jin Young showed what she is capable of: 67, five birdies, no bogies. Two shots better than anyone else in the field, and more than 7 shots better than the course average. If you set up your courses where everyone shoots 64, you just don't get to witness something as brilliant as this. This is really setting a course up 'for excitement'. Minjee quickly stumbled with an early double, and her four shot overnight lead over Jin Young evaporated. For a while they were tied, and Ko even briefly had the lead. But Minjee rallied, making several birdies to grab a two-shot lead with three holes to go. It looked like it was all over for Jin Young, especially after she hit into the bunker on the notorious 16th hole. But she got up and down there and from a similar bunker on 17, to the roars of the crowd; even she was a bit surprised by their reaction. She had birdied 18 the three previous days, and left herself a 20 footer that she had to make to put any pressure on Minjee. Like a total boss, she drained it, another in the long list of ultra clutch plays in her career. Minjee made a bogey coming in and her lead was down to one; it disappeared when Ko was done with 18. Minjee couldn't make a birdie and we went to a playoff. In the playoff on hole 18, both reached the green, but Jin Young left herself a much longer birdie try and, for the first time this week, couldn't make it. It looked again like Minjee had the win, but she missed the birdie to win, blowing the ball 6 feet past, then missed the par as well. Jin Young tapped in and the win was hers. No doubt this somewhat botched result was a gift to JYK, but it would have never even gotten to this point had Jin Young not made it happen with her previous amazing golf. Hae Ran Ryu had a nice week herself, notching a fifth and increasing her ROY lead. But this is mainly about Jin Young, who got the second win for Korea this year. Looking forward to see what she can do once she gets a little rest!
