I heard there is some sort of meeting to discuss gambling the night before round one on the PGA tour. What role does gambling play in golf?
How could a golf event be rigged? It seems to me rigging a golf event would require such an effort that it's never actually happened.
Rigging other sports events is easy with referees etc.

I don't know what kind of golf bets are available to make through a Vegas sports book or through an app on your smart phone. If it's a simple one like Player 'A' is favored to beat Player 'B', Player 'A' could bet on 'B', miss putts and no one could detect it. But, why would he bother doing this? The 2020-21 PGA Tour season stats show that 124 guys made $1,000,000 or more in "official" money. Then you add in the unofficial money and endorsements ... again, why bother?

I think it is even more basic. The essence of golf is ethics. In the pros, there are cameras and scorers. Amateur golf their are no referees or scorers just you and your playing partners. It's the only sport I know where the player is expected to know the rules and call infractions on yourself. And if one of your playing partners fail to do this, you are expected to do it for them, hopefully before they sign their card. To do otherwise is like selling your soul.

We all know human nature. As soon as gambling starts many will be drawn into the practice via peer pressure etc, until the whole field is betting on some aspect.
Surely the gambling seemed innocent initially. What happens later though? Groups of golfers gambling against other groups? The Wednesday night meeting on the PGA tour is just among themselves. Vagas isn't involved.
