Round 2
I had a chance to attend the second round today, and here is my report!
I got to the course a little after ten AM and caught up with Jin Young Ko just in time to see her miss a short par putt on hole 3. She was at 3 under for the day before that... This would be a trend for me; I managed to instantly curse two other golfers later in the day the same way.
She made a botch of hole 4, but every other hole was the same: excellent long game, but just not making the putts. On 5 she got up and down from a bunker for birdie. On 6, she hit to the fringe just past the hole but barely missed the birdie putt. On 7, she made birdie, but on 8 she bunkered and was not able to save par. So it goes; she still seemed to be in good spirits. I saw several Korean fans with JY Ko photos awaiting autographs when she finished.
Then I caught up with Yealimi Noh on hole 14. She was at 12 under, but literally no one was following her. A few comments. Her long game is really impressive: she hits high tee shots with length. She is a tall girl, too. I wouldn't be surprised if she's pushing 6 feet tall. Alas, she bungled 15 a little off the tee and couldn't save par; my curse continued. As good as her long game is, she really needs to work on her chipping. She bogied 15 thanks to a really bad chip. She had another stinker on 16, but managed to save par there. I watched her tee off on 17, then headed to find Lee 6.
I found Jeongeun as she teed off hole 3; she had a light blue outfit on. Naturally, in keeping with my curse powers, she bogied that hole with a short par miss. Lucky Six was having the same issues as Ko early on. Lots of great shots, but few birdies. On 5, she POUNDED the drive, then hit an iron to 15 feet. What a great shot that was; I was convinced she was laying up when she didnt grab a hybrid or wood. She made birdie there. On 6, she was close but missed the putt. On 7, a great drive, but terrible approach into the bunker, and she couldn't get up and down.
By then, I noticed that Youngin, who was three groups behind, was roaring up the leaderboard. I decided to stick with Lee if she could hit a good tee shot on 8. She did, to within 5 five feet, but again missed the birdie. Another great drive and approach on 9, but again no birdie.
By the way, if Inkster is counting on Morgan Pressel to do anything at Solheim, she's in for a disappointment. She played with Lucky Six, and MAN was she terrible. She hit her drive on 5 into the water, chucked her club later on 17 after a dreadful approach, and in general didn't do anything right. Leadership, though. I'll spare you more details, it was gruesome.
At that point, I walked back to 8, briefly watched In Gee, then waited for Youngin. She was coming off eagle on 7 and was at 11 under. I watched as she hit her tee shot on 8 to about 4 feet, then Finklestein made a hole in one! The Golf Channel people at the hole were saying into their mikes that it was Youngin who did that, so I walked up to them and corrected them. Yeah, I'm so helpful.
Youngin missed the birdie and I could see Lee6 make hers on 10, but I decided to stick with Chun. Glad I did, she chipped in for birdie on 9, which was very exciting.
Youngin is a short, stocky gal; physically, she couldn't be more different than Yealimi. She's also really cute and spunky. I can see her becoming really popular. She had a bigger gallery than Noh, although that meant about four fans including me. Her dad gave her a lot of instructions before every shot. He was also her caddie.
She laid up on 10 and hit a brilliant approach to four feet. She was playing with Christina Kim, who hit about six approaches to five feet or less and missed just about every putt. She had a major negative aura coming off her; it was really unpleasant. Youngin was tip-toeing around her. Come on, Christina, lighten up!
Youngin got a bit unlucky on 11; her approach rolled long and she didn't get up and down. She hit a great approach on 12 but didn't make the birdie. On 13, she had an awesome tee shot and made that one to move to 12 under. After 14, I saw Lee 6 make a great birdie on 16 (huge cheer from the green); she had moved back to 10 under. So I watched her on 17, where she hit a great drive, then dumped her approach into the bunker and couldn't get up and down. Fortunately, she made a great birdie on 18 after a monster drive and beautiful approach.
I stayed around 18 and saw Kent Paisley interview Sei Young Kim, who apparently had a 61 that I totally was not aware of until then. After the interview, Paisley gave her a high five and said 'great job on the round AND the interview'.
I went back to 18 and saw In Gee hit a fantastic approach to a foot for a smiley birdie. In Gee didn't have many fans following, maybe a dozen, but she did have two local kids and a dad following her inside the ropes. The kids were around 8 or 9 years old. I bet they were thrilled.
I saw Youngin make birdie on 16 on the big monitor, but I couldn't stay to watch her finish. Good luck to all the Sisters tomorrow!
