The youngest member of 2nd-generation K-pop group Big Bang, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, made the announcement on Monday that he was leaving the entertainment industry as he faces official scrutiny for a series of events at nightclubs he at least part owns. Seungri is also the last member of the five member group to set a date for his mandatory military service, although his scheduled enlistment date of 25 March is now in doubt.
A timeline of the events leading up to this point follows:www.sbs.com.au/popasia/blog/2019/03/12/timeline-burning-sun-controversy-seungris-retirementOther global media have also covered this story, including The Guardian and the BBC:www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-47521528www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/12/k-pop-scandal-big-bang-seungri-south-korea-charged-over-illegal-prostitution-ringGiven the clientele who frequented Seungri's establishments it is inevitable that other celebrities will be caught up in this wide ranging investigation. The first one we know about is Jung Joon Young, the solo artist who first rose to prominence as a finalist on that magical Season 4 of MNet's Superstar K in 2012. In addition to his music he's also been on TV variety shows, but the two he's currently involved in, including KBS' 2 Days & 1 Night, have announced in the wake of the allegations made against him that he's been edited out of material already filmed recently in California. He's now returned to Korea to meet with the prosecutors investigating his alleged secret filming of his sexual encounters and sharing them with his male friends online, including Seungri. Josh Carrot, AKA Korean Englishman on YouTube, has taken into private status the videos in which Jung, whom he's known for around 15 years, appeared.heavy.com/news/2019/03/jung-joon-young/Watch this space for further updates.Kevin

Jung Joon Young has returned to Korea and was booked by the police on the charges pending against him. As a consequence his passport has been confiscated meaning that he's barred from leaving the country. He penned the following open letter to his fans admitting to the facts against him and promising to cooperate with the investigation:www.soompi.com/article/1309816wpp/jung-joon-young-admits-to-crimes-in-letter-of-apologyAs per the previous post Korean Englishman removed from public view on his channel the videos he shot with Jung. Here's his explanation in the Community tab on his channel page:Per Google Mush Translate:"You know, it is not right to put on YouTube a video that could cause the viewers to feel uncomfortable with the sudden news yesterday, and then, in the end of the distress, the content that appeared in Jung. While watching the many speculations about our action spread overnight, I think we need to explain exactly why the viewers were getting the picture and why they are concerned! I have no connection with this event. I would like to thank all of you for your viewers and your worries, who are surprised by the chaotic situation! I'll greet you again tomorrow with a series of moms who love!" www.youtube.com/user/koreanenglishman/communityKevin

The latest updates on the Burning Sun scandal:
Prosecutors from the Seoul Central District Prosecution Office will continue to oversee the police investigation rather than assume the task themselves. The move was seen as assuring that the proper level of oversight was maintained even as the police themselves come under greater scrutiny, because the issue bigger than the indiscretions of the K-pop stars involved is the degree in which certain police officials were involved or at least looked the other way.
The transcripts from that infamous group chat room came to be in the possession of the Anti-Corruption and Human Rights Commission, who on 11 March turned them over to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, who in turn referred them to the Seoul Central District Prosecution Office. That office will retain those transcripts and make them available to the police upon request.
From the minutiae of how the wheels of justice are turning we now update you on the principal parties involved:Jung Joon Young arriving at the Seoul Metropolitan Police headquarters for questioning 14 March. The first arrest warrant in the ongoing scandal could be issued soon against Jung Joon Young for his alleged secret filming of his sexual encounters without his partners' consent and sharing them in a group chat room. He had a previous brush with the law on the former charge: in 2016 his ex-girlfriend accused him of sexual assault but he made a statement admitting instead to merely filming their sexual encounters which he insisted were consensual. He halted promotions for 2 months as a result. In the current case Jung is reported to have surrendered to the police his so-called "golden phone" on which the group chats were alleged to have been hosted, whose existence was hinted at by rapper Zico when he and Jung jointly appeared on a variety show in 2016.www.soompi.com/article/1309852wpp/zico-addresses-his-past-remarks-about-looking-at-jung-joon-youngs-golden-phoneUnder South Korean law, anyone who films or shares sex videos without the consent of those involved can be sentenced to up to five years in prison or be fined as much as 30 million won ($26,424).www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20190318000425National soccer hero Son Heung-min has "unfriended" Jung Joon Young on social media and removed a picture of the two on his Instagram account. The Tottenham Hotspur and Korea national team striker had worked on a TV special with Jung in the past.www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/art/2019/03/398_265583.htmlSeungri (Lee Seung-hyun) arriving at Seoul Metropolitan Police headquarters for questioning 14 March Seungri is looking to defer his 25 March enlistment so that he may continue to focus on the ongoing investigation. The group chat discovery came out of the initial investigation for sex abuse, sex trafficking and drugging female customers at his former nightclub Burning Sun. As previously noted here Choi Jong-hoon of FT Island was also in the infamous group chat room and has left the industry, since in addition to viewing the images in question he also boasted of having a 2016 DUI arrest covered up by police. Also known to be part of the chat room were Yong Jun-hyung of the group Highlight (the group formerly known as Beast when they debuted with their former label Cube Entertainment), who confessed to commenting on one of the videos and has also left show biz, as well as CN Blue member Lee Jong-hyun, currently away serving his country and thus unavailable for comment.www.scmp.com/week-asia/society/article/3002214/how-seungri-and-jung-joon-young-k-pop-sex-scandal-exposes-southPresident Moon Jae-in addressing a cabinet meeting Monday 18 March It has gotten to the point that even President Moon Jae-in has weighed in on the growing scandal. At a cabinet meeting on Monday he ordered a thorough investigation.www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/nation/2019/03/356_265594.htmlKevin

This scandal is more convoluted than Luggagegate. Are we SURE that Ha Na Jang's father is not somehow involved in this Seungri scandal? Where has he been all this time?

The news I'd been dreading has come to pass: Roy Kim is now identified as a member of Jung Joon Young's illicit video chat group and has been placed under investigation.
Roy became a household name in Korea by winning Superstar K season four in 2012, where he first met Jung, a fellow finalist and the alleged ring leader in the sex chat scandal. Their famous collaboration round cover of "Becoming Dust" was one of the signature moments of that competition and I'm surprised to find the video for it still floating around:Roy divides his time between Seoul (where he records his music, mostly ballads) and Washington (where he's majoring in sociology at Georgetown University). He has to curtail his spring semester to return to Korea and undergo interrogation regarding an illicit sexual image he allegedly shared; there's no indication of whether he initially created the file in question.Kevin

Another name has emerged from the controversial chat group allegedly run by Jung Joon Young, but first some news relating to Seungri, the initial focus of this ever expanding scandal.
Police in the Philippines questioned eight professional escorts who were at the former Big Bang member's birthday party in 2017 and based on their testimony charges of prostitution mediation, which is a fancy way of saying pimping, are pending against him. Back in Seoul Seungri has also endured another round of questioning from police after they recovered evidence that he had warned other members of the chat group to swap out their phones.Kim Jung-hwan, whose stage name is Eddy Kim, was another finalist from season four of Superstar K. The Berklee College of Music graduate was serving his mandatory military service at the time of the competition in 2012, but won a place through one of a series of auditions held at military bases across the country set up by MNet at the request of PSY, one of the three judges on the show, as a way of identifying hidden talent in the nation's armed forces. Eddy was thus granted leave for as long as he remained a contestant. He launched his musical career soon after he mustered out in 2014.
Kim is also the latest name attached to Jung Joon Young's chat group, as police booked him on suspicion of spreading illicit images shortly after questioning him last Thursday. Meanwhile Roy Kim arrived back in Korea earlier today (Tuesday) to face his own round of questioning from police.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Sun_scandalKevin

RoK needs to finally legalize porn IMO. Let those who are willing be the providers of adult entertainment instead of all this hidden camera shenanigans. First, you may now notice that the Roy Kim/Jung Joon Young video above is no longer available. I was wondering how long it was going to take for MNet to get around to pulling it.
To the point raised above: there is seemingly an epidemic of hidden spy cams in Korea, mostly targeting women, and as this report from the Seoul correspondent for Singapore's Channel News Asia demonstrates, they are all too easy to hide.Kevin
