The forecast is still looking awful with showers and T-storms expected each of the four days. I assume it will be lift, clean, and place all three days, and the scoring record for a major could be threatened.
Saturday and Sunday's forecast appears to be fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!
To me, the pro-am is all about the amateurs. Playing in a pro-am is expensive, although I think most spots are bought by companies. (Want to play in the September BMW pro-am? Cough up $11,000, please.)
That's why I hate to see some golfers treating the pro-am as a practice round.
Seeing Michelle Wie 100 feet away from the amateurs, working with her coach, makes me want to puke. There is time to practice before and after the pro-am. I guess she's special, though.
Christina Kim was her usual self during the pro-am, and that's a good thing. She's wonderful.
She isn't Korean, but Shanshan Feng is always great around the public, too.
Lydia Ko seemed to be enjoying the pro-am. One shot of hers went deep into the woods, but somehow ended up in the middle of the fairway. It's better to be lucky than good, but it's even better to be lucky and good.
Tiger's niece, Cheyenne, seemed to be a genuinely nice person. So did David Leadbetter. Ryne Sandberg is about 50 pounds over his playing weight.
"Sometimes we get stuck on bombers golf courses so I think it (Olympia Fields) is good."
I've been picking up some anti-bomber sentiment in what Lydia says about courses, too.
The tour is set up so the same players can win every week and become stars. For shame!
Excerpt from So Yeon's pre-tournament comments:
“Compared to the last two years, the rough’s length, I kind of hate to say this, is the easiest,” Ryu said of her three starts in the Women’s PGA Championship.
Ryu said the greens are an entirely different matter. She said they are small with lots of slope and will be a challenge if they remain as firm and fast as they are.
Oh no. Not again!! Another course where long hitters don't have rough to worry about, so they can hit drivers all the time. Then, they will be the only ones hitting short enough irons into the greens to actually hold, while the other players will be trying to stop the ball from rolling off the green all the time.
Is it so much to ask that we occasionally see penal rough and narrow fairways? It is a Major, after all. There better not be any 235 yard par fours!!
I've been enjoying the So Yeon lovefest in the media the past few days. I swear, she has gotten more attention since rising to #1 than in all the rest of her career combined.
The tough part is going to be staying at #1. Her biggest assets are a tendency to play well in tough events like Majors, and almost superhuman consistency the rest of the time.
Best of luck to her this week in bringing her A Game and keeping the wolves at bay. Would love to see her make this a long stay at the top. But whatever happens in Chicago, I hope she can do herself proud. Hwaiting!
