4 strokes is too much for an inadvertent penalty. The worst part is it was a one foot put that she didn't have to mark. I'm not a rules geek but two pillars of golf are contradictory. The field must be protected above all else. Golfers police themselves and can because they play with integrity. Pro golfers don't have inordinate integrity, they have inordinate talent. So I'm fine with watching for and inforcing penalties caught on camera. But the LPGA is a brand. And the brand is hurt when someone from their couch effects the outcome. Have two rules officials watching the broadcast and they wrap it up and the end of each day.

And how about all the infractions that are never called because the cameras aren't on every player.
This call-in bullsh*t also occurs on the PGA tour too. Again...it's a JOKE people from home can affect the outcome in golf....nuff said.

This person, whoever he or she is, is very likely trudging across a frozen field towards the Canadian border and the outstretched arms of the RCMP, the first steps in a bid for asylum after calling out someone who once played golf with The Orange One (and it's not a reference to a Volvik ball).

Presumably because she practice off Txxxx Los Angeles when she is in LA. That person can safely come back to the open arms of America.

You're overlooking the nationalities of the two players involved, which will also play into how this is remembered going forward. It says something when Tiger Woods, who famously watches very little televised golf and aside from congratulating Cheyenne for winning in Australia a few years back seldom ever comments on the women's game, took to Twitter to vent his frustration about the situation and throw his support to Lexi during the run of play.

I doubt the Great Man even knows who SYR is. They probably let her practice there for publicity among the big local Korean population. It is interesting that the big cat would chime in. Personal I think: 1, He was a victim himself of viewer call ins multiple times. 2, He has reached the twilight of his career and can afford to be more outspoken. 3, The absurdity of this situation is so unprecedented . Call in during midround of the NEXT day ??

Bullshit. He says she mis-marked it by a quarter of a dime. Try an inch. It's pretty easy to see what's going on here. Rules officials are an easy target and everybody in the beaten down golf media is trying to please their audience.

Oh for sure it's a double standard with the rubes that watch golf, just in general. To be clear tho, I'm just saying that a penalty should be called, not that she cheated. Having to live with the truth is the ultimate punishment or freedom anyway.

He got some nerve talking about penalties.

And after Tiger ******* the Perkins waitress in the back of his SUV...all he bought her was a $5 Subway sandwich using a coupon. Ya gotta luv and admire Tiger. I had to spend at least $20 for a date back in the 70's and I would have been lucky to get a kiss at the end of the night...that's kinda a lot of money as a young kid who washed dishes by hand and then got promoted to a busboy only to get abused by some horny waitresses..though I never complained.

Here's a typical article that is chock full of ridiculous assumptions and unfair treatment of So Yeon. Written by the poorly named Mark Reason: I'm going to have fun with his stupidity below. Daft rules leave golf wide open to fixing by gamblersOMG. Really? Some Asian gambler tried to sabotage Lexi Thompson? How do we know aliens didn't cause it? I mean, really. This guy is paid to write stuff like this. The mind reels. (and of course, the gambler is Asian. Didn't anyone at the news outlet think that might be a tad problematic?) OK, he's cool with a two white girl duel at least. OK, time to put this argument to rest. Here's my counter argument to this: 1. There is no sports event in the history of time where 100% of rules infractions are caught. Anyone who does get caught is in some ways victim of bad luck. Therefore, are we to throw up our hands and say we shouldn't call ANY infractions? Of course not. 2. The strong implication here is that So Yeon Ryu might have cheated, too, if we could have seen all her ball marks. This is a far cry from the way they treated Chella Choi. She gets caught on camera doing the same thing as Lexi, and there was a huge outcry that the LPGA should investigate her and maybe ban her. NO ONE would do something like that except a cheater, they all cried. I have not heard ONE person suggest Lexi should be banned or investigated. Now, I'm not saying she should be, I'm saying there is definite bias towards the American and against the Asian here. 3. By his own argument, we only saw, let's say, about 20% of Lexi's putts. How do we know she didn't make several more mistakes? I mean, if you are going to impugn Ryu and the others, why stop there? Why not impugn everyone? Including Lexi? Bottom Line: she was caught on camera breaking the rules. How she was caught is immaterial (email, phone call, ref, psychic intervention, whatever). Whether others weren't caught and got away with something isn't important (because, as I said, there will always be people getting away with stuff off camera in any sport, no way to avoid it). She was breaking the rules and had to be punished. And it was clear that entailed a four stroke penalty. The solution is not to allow Lexi to break the rules. The solution is to change how the rules are applied. I'm all for that. Along those lines, several people online have crapped on Ryu, saying she should have lost by four shots because of the penalty. OK, say she had beaten Thompson by five. You KNOW they would then say, "well, the penalty messed up Lexi so much that she couldn't play as well afterwards, but she would have beaten her". In other words, even if So Yeon had won by ten shots, they would have had an excuse. Ah, OK. She was tired, and she didn't really mean it (according to who? Lexi of course), so she should be allowed to break the rules. Got it. Tell that to Chella Choi. Good grief. So Yeon is classless because she played to win? Imagine what would happen if a woman purposely tanked so Lexi could win. Would Thompson feel like she had earned a win? What would that do to the reputation of women's golf as a serious sport? God in heaven, shut this guy up! I hope he's joking. No one gains an advantage by picking first (crucially? Please). It's random chance which number you get, no matter who picks. But sure, let's think of another way to impugn Ryu. Thank you for letting me vent! I really do feel empathy for Lexi and what she went through, but the way (some of) her fans have treated Ryu online has been so crummy that I'm starting to lose patience.

Happy, I truly can't believe how goofy the public and so many in the golf media sound on this issue.
Thank goodness there are people like Brandle Chamblee etc that tell it like it is. I also think Mike Whan made an excellent statement. He can't overturn a ruling properly enforced.
There was literally nothing wrong with anything that happened other than what Lexi herself did.
4 stroke is perhaps too much of a penalty if it was inadvertent. But nobody knows her intent and 4 strokes it too light a penalty if it was on purpose.
