Yeah, the resort course is a pussycat. There are many other courses in the area that have teeth. Greyhawk doesn't have the land to support a tournament I would imagine, as it's pretty pinched by the surrounding housing. I used to play Grayhawk when I was younger. The Raptor course not the Talon. I don't play it anymore because I am to vain to move up to a shorter tee. Tonto Verde east of Greyhawk has the same great fairways. Doesn't Bones play out of Grayhawk?....I think Bones resides in Scottsdale? Maybe a 'free' membership due to FIGJAM's ambassador partnership/branding of Phil's Grille at Grayhawk. There are a lot of nice tracks in Phoenix. But don't you find it frustrating paying high green fees in the fall/winter/spring due to all the snowbirds. Are privates expensive to join? The top 5 privates in Vancouver are $50-$80k non-equity initiations....monthly's about $500. Hindsight is 20/20...should have done a bit of real estate investing in Phoenix after the financial crisis and also when the exchange rate was favorable. But then again...the real estate market took off in a stupid way here....now it's cooled down because of the 15% premium foreign buyer tax...a racist tax to stop the mainland Chinese purchases....who needs a WALL....lol.

argonne69 It's nice that you have such a wealth of golf experience. Do you have any plans for Monterey Peninsula, Cabot Links or Bandon Dunes? I played Bandon in 2013. I'm tentatively planning a San Francisco to Pebble Beach trip this summer. I've played 381 different courses, and I'm trying to align the planets to that Pebble is my 400th course. I'll likely hit Cabot after I'm retired. I'd like to take an extended trip up that way.

I remember driving through the newer parts of Scottsdale in 2008 and 2009, and I swear 80% of the homes had "For Sale" signs out front. Investors had bought the vast majority of the new homes to flip, and got caught with their pants down.

I've never liked the aesthetics of any courses surrounded by houses....but during the 90's and early 2000's housing boom....most new courses were really a real estate play for marketing purposes.

I know all the Bandon tracks are great. I'm thinking the Trails breaks up the monotony of the links style of the other 3...do you agree? Supposedly the Trails greens are lousy this year compared to the other courses. Yes....the links of Bandon are 2nd to none....but I've always preferred tree lined parkland style courses over links style tracks. And yes, Bandon needs to be crossed off my bucket list.

When taken in isolation, Bandon Trails is a great course. However, I think it's a bit out of place at Bandon. It was my least favorite of the courses there. Over the years I've come to appreciate the nuances of true links golf. I still prefer a beautiful, tree lined parkland course, especially if it's surrounded by pine trees, or an isolated desert golf course with few homes (e.g. We Ka Pa, Dove Mountain), but I certainly won't pass up a real links course, of which there are few in the U.S. There are many courses masquerading as links courses because they have few trees, and/or lots of bunkers, but without the firm and fast conditions, they play as aerial assault courses. I don't find links courses monotonous. One could say the same thing of parkland courses with endless tree-lined par 4's. Ultimately, the course has to challenge you to hit creative shots. 'Nothing like putting from 50 yards out in the fairway to test your game.

There's a course in Chicago, Klein Creek, that has been really struggling in the past few years. I swear there's OB on practically every hole, and water on the other side of the fairway. To maximize homes on the property, they elected to skip the driving range. The course is just too tight and penal for any shot hit slightly offline. 'Not my idea of a nice day on the links.

Tonto Verde is nice. Especially liked the little easier course (Three Peaks?). And they have a fun 18 hole putting course.

Madeleine Sheils is No. 8 on alternates list; she's been 0 out 4 for LPGA events this year.

My chipping sucks....when I played a links style course last month....I found myself putting 5 yds off the greens...so 50 yds would be fun. Did you goof around much on the Punch Bowl. A few weeks ago...I won 29 skins in a putting contest....we were putting from 100-150 ft...from rough, over rough...off sand and off a patio....lol.

'Just too easy to catch a wedge slightly fat, and have it stick in the turf. I putt with a hybrid quite often around the greens. No, I didn't play the Punch Bowl. It was the first time I had walked 36 a day, and I did that for two days in a row. After my two rounds, I was beat. I learned a valuable lesson about having good socks, and anti-chaffing cream, as I was blistered and chaffed. I played The Preserve par 3 course the final day.

Madeleine Sheils is No. 8 on alternates list; she's been 0 out 4 for LPGA events this year. Maddy would be a nice new face on the LPGA...she'll probably make it to the Shop-Rite/Acer, thanks to a lot of no-shows. She has entered the Monday qualifiers for Phoenix and Carlsbad. BTW, Eun Jeong Seong has entered the Monday qualifier for the Lotte Championship. The life of a marginal pro: Maddy recently played a pro-am in Tobago and caddied for Val Skinner on the senior women's tour. This could a slower-than-expected season for Larry the Looper; she has a couple of pix of him on her various social media sites.
