I'm curious as to what the format will be. 72 Holes of individual stroke play. In the event of a tie for any of the medals there would be a three hole aggregate playoff, then sudden death if necessary. They may add a team competition later once they see how 2016 goes.
The 60 players in each competition will be determined from the world rankings as of 11 July 2016, the month prior to the completion. The top 15 qualify with no more than 4 per country (and in the Olympics England, Scotland and Wales must come together as Great Britain, while athletes in Northern Ireland can choose either the British or Irish team to play for) gaining entry via this method. For the rest of the 60 player field they go with the highest ranked players from countries that don't already have 2 players in the field, with the IOC also assuring that the host nation (Brazil) is represented and that there are players from all permanently inhabited continents.
The current rankings based on this criteria, giving one an idea of what each Olympic field would look like, are below:

While we're on the subject of Olympic dreams the USOC recently chose which domestic city to back in the race to host the 2024 Summer Games. Beating out two-time host Los Angeles as well as San Francisco and Washington was the only first-time bidder in this competition - BOSTON. It is much too early in the process to gauge our chances since the deadline for cities to finalize their bids with the IOC isn't until later this year and the winner won't be chosen for another 2 years after that, but many pundits believe that another Summer Olympics on US soil are overdue so there is a very real possibility here.

There is also a Youth Olympics that takes place every four years, but staggered two years from the regular Olympics. 18-years-old and under I believe.
Anyway, they had a golf event in 2014, marking the first time there was any sort of Olympic golf competition in over 100 years. What was interesting is, they had a men's and women's individual event and a mixed gender team event pairing one girl and one boy. Korea ended up losing that to Sweden in a playoff (meaning Sweden got gold, Korea silver).
A team event is not on the docket for the regular Olympics, but I think it would be a GREAT idea to have something like that in the future. I hope the Youth team event was a trial run for just such an idea, because that would be huge for women's golf.

Thanks, IceCat. I am surprised there won't be a team competition.
