No golf thread yet. Coming soon! The highlight of last night was definitely the race between the Russian and Lilly King in the 100 Breast. How the Russian got into the field with two doping convictions is beyond me, but she got touched out in the end, which seemed like good retribution. Meanwhile, Hong Kong swimmer and flag bearer Stephanie Au continues to attract attention. There's this fairly humorous article about how much of an impact she's made just by being cute. The writer really outdoes himself with the Oriental Venus comment! How Stephanie Au Has Already WonAnd I found her Instagram page: Stephanie Au Instagram Pagehttps://www.instagram.com/p/BFeOpk9whg6 HF, you are so smitten with her. I may be able to translate what she wrote for you. All you have to do is say "Lydia is the greatest" I guess I'm crushing on her a bit. I used to be a swimmer in high school and college, so that doesn't hurt, either. Would it count if I said "Lydia is the greatest... for now." ?

Watched the women's archery round of 16 this morning.
I thought going in that the toughest match of the three would be #1 Mi Sun Choi against a top Russian, Inna Stepanova, and I was right. The Russian actually won the second set, but Choi bounced back with a win in the third, a draw in the fourth, and a win in the fifth. Both ladies were hitting the center of the target over and over. It was really impressive, but Choi is through to the quarters.
The next match featured defending gold medalist Bo Bae Ki against a Burmese archer named San Yu Htwe. Htwe had upset the American's top archer in the previous round, so it looked like it would be tough, and Ki started a little off her game but still managed to win the first set when Htwe, who had the set in hand, hit a terrible final arrow. But this match pivoted on the second set, when, on the second arrow, Htwe did this weird flick (nerves?) with her hand and completely missed the target. I have never seen that happen before. After that it was an easy roll for Ki.
The third South Korean went up against a North Korean. Hye Jin Chang put an end to the hopes of Kim Jung Un's golden girl Un Ju Kang 6-2. They tied the first, Chang won the next two, and a tie in the fourth allowed her to put it away.
So three Sisters in the final 8. The quarters, semis and medal matches are starting in about an hour. HWAITING!!!

The Korean archer ladies did it, but the winner was not the archer everyone was expecting! The conditions were windy during the final three rounds, which played havoc for several of the archers. The first big surprise came in the quarters. The #1 seed, Mi Sun Choi, couldn't get her nerves under control, and bowed out in straight sets. Fortunately, Bo Bae Ki and Hye Jin Chang managed to advance to the semis, where unfortunately they played each other. In that match, it was surprisingly Ki who faltered. and Chang went on to play for the gold while Ki ended up going for bronze. Ki played a Mexican archer for the bronze. The Mexican fans were really rowdy, and Ki struggled with the wind, even shooting a 3 at one point. But she finished the fifth and final set with a perfect 30 and claimed the bronze. So, she failed to become the first archer to ever defend her Olympic title, but still medalled. Meanwhile, Hye Jin Chang played Germany's Lisa Unruh in the finals. Chang managed to capture the first set and rolled from there, capturing the gold medal for Korea. Congrats, ladies!!!! (PS - all the matches are archived on nbcolympics.com/archery if you want to check them out).

The other big highlight on Friday for me was watching Joseph Schooling from Singapore school Michael Phelps in the 100 m Fly. Phelps and his two big rivals, Chad Le Clos and Laslo Czeh, all tied for silver, one of the craziest finishes I can remember. It was the first gold medal ever for Singapore I think. And definitely the first time I saw the Singapore national anthem played on network TV (they showed the medal ceremony, which was awesome!). Tonight is the women's 50 m free, and my favorite swimmer from 2012, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, will be going for the gold. She's been pretty quiet this year, but she's the defending champion, she's awesome, and she has the best name ever. Go Ranomi!

Diving is one of my favorite sports in the Olympics. This is a weird year, because for the first time in a long time, they are diving in an outside venue, so wind plays a factor. And the yucky green color of the water adds an extra X-factor, as apparently it changes the way divers see the water as they are plunging towards it. Just watching the prelims for women's 3m springboard. Esther Qin was 18 years old when the Chinese team told her she was no longer good enough to be on their team. She emigrated to Australia, and here she is in the Olympics! Good luck to her! (she just made it into the finals as I type this). She won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014:

The Australian guy who commentates LPGA tour events when it swings over to Asia is commentating the track events here on nbcolympics.com.
I'm glad I can access videos on nbcolympics.com. I stayed up late last night watching a replay of the heptathlon high jump. A great battle developed Britain Katarina Johnson-Thompson and eventual Gold Medalist Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium. They bowed out after failing to jump 2.01m which would tied for World Leading for the event - the high jump event! Thiam is tall, big and young and will be a factor for years to come.
Another highlight was Almaz Ayana smashing the 23-year-old World Record in the 10,000m for women.
