Papago hosted the Tour's Phoenix stop in 2009, which I attended and was won by Karrie Webb. As it is a muni (a "goat track" in mr3putt's parlance) it didn't have adequate clubhouse space so the Tour brought in portable facilities for that purpose. This "tent city" vibe and the fact that there was no assurance that Phoenix, a popular stop on Tour, would remain on the schedule after that year (it was absent in 2010) only added to the cacophony of reasons for Carolyn Bivens' ultimate dismissal from the Commissioner's post that summer.
As for walking around outside in the dry desert heat I did have a brief holiday in Las Vegas a few years back during August. If you're prepared it is doable but it does wear on you after a while but I was riding public transit around the city with some walking as well; I couldn't imagine what it would feel like to play golf in such dry heat. I've of course attended tournaments in hot and humid conditions but my times watching golf in the desert were during the spring so I have no basis of comparison.Kevin Their reason for ASU Golf team moving was to make room for other developments at the Karsten course. They not only changed the length at Papago they also changed most of the holes. It is no longer a Muni course. The people who took over the course was supposed to build a Club House. They went bankrupt. People who run the Raven among others courses run it now. We like playing in the summer because we can play the courses that is over priced in the winter. We just stay hydrated and not try to walk. I attended the LPGA tournament when they played at Papago. It was the only place that they could find on such short notice. Anyway it was the last time I got to follow Mi Hyun Kim. My all time favorite golfer.

I've played a number of good muni's in the US and there are 5 really good muni's and value for money here in Van City and Burnaby.....as I've said many times....for a metro city....Van City is golf heaven....there are 8 good public tracks all within 30 minutes of downtown Vancouver and reasonably priced compared to other large metro cities. I was in Vegas in Aug 2011 for my stepson's 2nd wedding....it was 110*F but kind of bearable....I had no issues walking the strip...but then again we'd stop into the hotels every now and then and also for the $1 frozen daiquiri's and/or margarita's. ....but it would be different walking in the blazing sun to try to concentrate playing golf for 4 hrs.

I like that little mountain as you fly into Sky Harbor and you can also see Papago flying in too. Talk about sh*tholes....have you ever played Randolph North in Tuscon where they use to play a LPGA event...what a dump of a clubhouse...I think it went through some reno's....but I think it's still a dump. My wife and I played it in 1997....wanted to get in a quick cheap rd.....we played the muni in Yuma....it was pretty good.....so busy everyone played in 5somes....2 other guys in out group were Canuck snowbirds. I saw maybe one of the nicest big full moon at sundown in Tuscon in my life.

I only played Randolph North when Stuart Anderson had a golf tournament for his Restaurant employees there. Some of us got invited to play because a guy who played in our men's club was always invited. Just a fun tournament, afterwards we went to his Restaurant to eat. Otherwise I would not drive there to play.
The only course we played down there were Tucson National Resort which is north of Tucson. We also played Tubac Golf Resort, where the movie Ten Cup was filmed. Both great courses then, not played either course in about fifteen years.
