from my blog: Tennis Players Dominate Forbes 2016 List Of Top Paid Female Athletes With Serena Williams Coming In At #1#1 SERENA WILLIAMS (Tennis), $28.9 Million After an 11-year reign as the top female money earner in sports, counting endorsements combined with prizemoney, the provisionally suspended Maria Sharapova fell to #2 as 21-time singles Major winner Serena Williams tops the Forbes 2016 list, measuring money over the last 12 months. Considering that some of her sponsors have at least temporarily abandoned her and she’s not currently playing, it’s possible Masha could fall out of the top 10 altogether next year. That said, she didn’t slip too far this time, dropping to #2. Mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey came in at #3, edging race car driver Danica Patrick who settled for #4. The rest of the top 10, like Serena and Sharapova, are tennis players. #2 MARIA SHARAPOVA (Tennis), $21.9 Million #3 RONDA ROUSEY (Mixed Martial Arts), $14 Million #4 DANICA PATRICK (Auto Racing), $13.9 Million #5 AGNIESZKA RADWANSKA (Tennis), $10.2 Million #6 CAROLINE WOZNIACKI (Tennis), $8 Million #7 GARBINE MUGURUZA (Tennis), $7.6 Million #8 ANA IVANOVIC (Tennis), $7.4 Million #9 VICTORIA AZARENKA (Tennis), $6.6 Million #10 EUGENIE BOUCHARD (Tennis), $6.2 Million

Serena deserves more money. The rest of them deserve less.

Serena deserves more money. The rest of them deserve less. Well, if we're measuring on the court, then yes. But one thing I've tried to point out over the years is how much product Maria Sharapova pushed. That's what sponsors ultimately pay for. For example, while Serena was winning more Majors than Masha, Sharapova had one of Cole Haan's best selling shoes, her Maria Sharapova branded ballet flat. At the time, Cole Haan was a subsidiary of Nike. So if I'm Masha's agent, I say that my client is selling more product for you than any other female athlete, so she deserves a bigger Nike contract. There's being the champ on the court and being the champ at the department store cash register. Despite Serena's popularity, particularly in the States, around the world Sharapova has more fans, many of whom buy her products. I've never bought anything solely branded by Serena...but I've bought Sugarpova candies on multiple occasions. There are other examples of this, but it's 1 in the morning where I am...time for bed...seeya!

I'd rather buy junk from Serena than all those other girls.

This is the list In Gee should shoot for; she's that good! I'd love to see In Gee on this list. We know because of Sharapova that there will be at least one opening in the top 10 next year. Usually, there are at least 1 or 2 LPGA players in the top 10. Annika, Lorena, Creamer and Wie just off the top of my head have made it in the past. A lot of it depends on endorsements. Tennis star Ana Ivanovic has had some up and down years on the court but her fashion line does pretty well around the world. So as I always try to point out, endorsement money isn't a meritocracy about what you do on the course. That helps. It matters how much a company can use you to make fans buy products. Michelle Wie is my 2nd favorite player behind Ariya Jutanugarn but I have to be fair. She made the top 10 a couple of times when she first turned pro before she ever won anything. But companies at that time wanted to be associated with and help generate the hype that surrounded her in those days. Creamer to a lesser degree still made the list last year even though her play isn't what it once was and there were lots of players who outplayed her on the course.

Wow....$6M for Eugenie...who is basically toast.....hmmmm if Paige Spiranac can get golf attention.....if Eugenie became a 7 cap golfer she'd still make $2M/year.
Eugenie is arrogant and cocky...no wonder the Smiling Buddha likes her.

Wow, I sure would not have recognized Caroline Wozniacki. Quite the dress, though.
