Since the Monday qualifying round was going to be unsuspended on Tuesday at 7 AM, I gave serious thought to getting up at 3 AM and leaving my house no later than 4:30 AM. That thought lasted about five seconds. The revised plan was to hit the Seaview briefly before going to Mays Landing CC for a 3:08 PM tee time.
The shuttle dropped me off at 1:05 PM. My first stop was the pro shop...while there I heard this exchange between Sandra Gal and a pro shop employee:
Gal: I just received some new wedges from Callaway. Can someone check the lofts and lies of them?
Man: I’m sorry, but we don’t have the machine here to do that. I would suggest going to a big box golf retailer.
(Note: I thought about blurting out “Try Galloway National GC”, but I kept my mouth shut. The OEM gear trailers were not here this week. I assume going from Michigan to Atlantic City to Seattle in consecutive weeks was not doable...and not worth it when the AC field was full of scrubs).
Gal (to a person with her): Okay, we’ll do it next week. We’ll play the old wedges this week.
I hit the range first where I spotted a couple of Coates Golf players, Juli Inkster and Sarah Kemp. Inkster was talking with Mr. TaylorMade, who went to work with a wrench on one of her FWs or UTs. Another player hitting was Nannette Hill, who made some interesting iron swings with cut-off finishes.
I walked back to the hotel area and passed the LPGA physio van. The player pictures on the sides of it have been updated...no more Creamer, Miyazato, Tseng...now it includes Winbee, Ryu, and Ko.
I stopped at the big practice green in front of the hotel. Mi Hyang Lee’s bag was there, but she was not. My time was limited, so I chose not to wait around.
I took a stroll to the Bay course where some of the practice rounds were starting or ending. Christine Song exited the 18th green and I wished her luck. Ssu-Chia Cheng and Wei-Ling Hsu teed off at #10 and wore identical CTBC caps.
At the nearby 9th green, the threesome of Brooke Henderson, Mo Martin, and Kelly Shon was wrapping up. Martin threw a ball hard into the junk behing the green to get a realistic lie, then tried to wedge it out...the ball rolled about four feet to the green’s collar. Shon had a familiar face caddying for her, Mike Carrick (Mi Hyang Lee’s ex-loop).
Before crossing the street back to the practice green, Kelly stopped and allowed her mom to apply ointment to areas of her skin, as the bugs had chomped on her. Old Mike continued ahead and stopped in the center of the practice green to watch MHL putt. She had four pairs of tees as alignment aids placed at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock around a hole about four feet away. I couldn’t tell if he said anything to her. When Kelly caught up to them, she exchanged hugs with Mi Hyang.
Took a look at some of the bags around the green...one that got my attention was Benyapa (“Gift”) Niphatsophon. She was a rare blades player, Titleist MB 714s. I think she also had the latest Titleist MB utility iron.
Mi Hyang’s current loop, Andrew Tschudin, was next to the practice green ropes, so I asked him how he got the job. He said he was working in Australia when her manager called him last year. He declined the offer twice before accepting this year. He said she was playing in the Wed. Pro-Am at 1 PM, so I thanked him and said so long. It was 2:05 PM and I didn’t want to make my tee time at the last minute.
Mays Landing CC had a great special on their website, $19.75 (including cart) for Tuesday afternoon after 3 PM. I played there once before, at least ten years ago, so I had no memory of the course. I recall the grille had plaques/photos of future PGAer Jim Dent, who was the club champ in the ‘60s. Old reviews on the Internet blast this course as a dump, but new owners took over last year and totally restored and revamped it. The fairways had grass and the greens were velvety plush...better than any the ladies would play at the Seaview Bay course this week.
