I debated whether I would post this. It's a link to a really poorly researched and written piece of garbage from a website (magazine? Fish wrapper?) called 'Pro Golf Weekly', talking about the LPGA's 'dirty little secret': Asian dominance. As usual, we have someone blaming the Koreans for all the problems of the LPGA.
LPGA's Dirty Little Secret
Try not to throw up in your mouth while reading it. The moron uses Jan Stephenson as an authority on race relations, and defends Bivens' English language requirement. Just to prepare you in case you read it. But you might enjoy my below evisceration instead. I do the hard work so you don't have to!
His basic argument (as far as I can tell wading through his verbal diarrhea) is that Americans cannot relate to Korean golfers, and hence the ratings have gone down for tournaments.
My first question, of course, is who does he consider an 'American'? Obviously Korean Americans wouldn't count, since THEY would have no problem relating to Koreans I would assume. He kind of tips his hand to his true agenda right there.
Another hint: he mentions that Michelle Wie is OK with fans, so you know it's not a racial thing. But then he goes on to point out that, among winners this year, Aussie-born Minjee Lee and French Celine Boutier are also of Asian extraction. Wait, why does that matter? Minjee is as Aussie as Karrie Webb. Why does he feel the need to point out her ethnicity? Shouldn't she be fine with "Americans" by his argument? Hmmmmm.....
Am I calling him a racist? If the spiked shoe fits...
His pathetic solution is to create quotas for foreign players (sound familiar?). So, basically, if white people can win, allow competition. But if they are not going to win, game the system to allow them to win.
That will improve the ratings on the LPGA? How about the integrity of the league? And he has no clue how that will affect the bottom line of the tour, which has never been healthier thanks to all the Asian companies that sponsor it (and would leave in droves if his idiot suggestion were implemented).
I think that anyone who is a real golf fan would not prefer a league where most of the best players in the world are prevented from playing, period, even if it does allow Bunny McBlonde from Kalamazoo to get more trophies.
He points out that the ratings for the US Women's Open have gone down a lot since the 'Asian invasion'. OK, but he neglects to mention who won the US Women's Open in 2010. Wasn't it Creamer? Yet according to his own chart, her ratings were LOWER than Ji's win the previous year, or Ryu's the next year. Convenient that he didn't mention that, huh?
And he says that the LPGA really needed Lexi to win last week. But Thompson was in contention going into Sunday, in fact in better position than Lucky Six. Why didn't huge mobs of fans tune in to watch the 'fan favorite'? They didn't know she would choke. But they didn't tune in, so maybe his great white hope theory is without merit? Sorry, only facts that support his narrative are allowed!
And of course, the most attended Open in the past two decades was Lancaster, where In Gee won. Ask the people of Lancaster if they can relate to In Gee? They LOVE her there, her charity to that community, her grace and friendliness. So much for the 'Americans can't relate to Koreans' argument.
(my own explanation for the ratings decline is far more nuanced, and thus beyond his understanding. Basically, the media refuses to promote the best players. So when those players win instead of the chosen few, people don't tune in. Americans are an easier sell to other Americans than Koreans, of course, but Koreans and other foreigners CAN be marketed to Americans, just like a woman named Annika was last decade. But the media refuses to promote women's golf at all, and when they do, it's all Henderson, Creamer and Wie).
He says the KLPGA does not allow foreigners to play. Another lie; just last week there were half a dozen non-Koreans in the field, and they frequently invite non-Korean stars to play there. I think Pressel won an event over there once, and I know Inkster did. The KLPGA has stated that they are working to get more foreign born players on tour.
Biven's English language policy, which he seems to love, was an enormous joke; besides being clearly racist, it was also half baked, with no definition of the penalties, the amount of time it should take before kicking in, what constitutes fluency, etc. And by her own admission, it would only affect a small percentage of the Asian players. So why have it at all? Yet this genius thinks it's the way to go. Unironically he says that. No evidence it would work, details as to how it would be implemented, anything. Yeesh.
By the way, Haney was CLEARLY trolling the LPGA. Either he is truly an ignoramus who knows nothing about women's golf, so much so that he openly brags about his lack of knowledge of the biggest event in their schedule; in which case he should be immediately fired from a show where he purports to be an expert on the sport. Or he is purposely saying obnoxious things about women and Koreans to appeal to his semi-literate fan base, in which case he is TRYING to piss LPGA fans and players off. If so, it is a supreme dick move to then pretend to act innocent when people respond and do get angry -- 'oh, you're so *sensitive*'. Up yours, Hank.
The writer likes 'controversial' Hank, but melts like a snowflake when people push back on his controversial statements. What does he think 'controversial' even means? Can't have it both ways, genius.
Oh, and Inbee was clearly joking when she claimed that Koreans had 'dominant blood', but the writer takes her seriously. She also once said that the Koreans were so good because of kimchi. Surprised he didn't mention that, too.
Sorry for the rant. I felt like torching this fool, and boy did it feel good.
