US Women's Amateur used to be the pinnacle of amateur career for women golfers; but the advent of Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship adds new intrigue to the equations.
US Amateur match play format produced champions that didn't blossom in their pro careers. The Augusta National is a stroke play event and hopefully will produce champions that endure.
In any event; the current collegiate players find that they have more to play for before turning professionals.
This will be the fourth consecutive year Golf Channel has covered the women’s and men’s championships, now held at the same venue to make it economical for TV.
Regional qualifying for the 72-hole championship played out over four events, with the top six teams at each regional qualifying for the national championship. That means 24 teams of five players qualify for the championship tournament, as well 12 individual players (three from each regional) that placed best among teams that didn't qualify for the championship.
At the 72-hole stroke play national championship, 132 players compete with a cut made after 54 holes to the low 15 teams and low nine individuals on non-qualifying teams. At the end of 72 holes, the eight best teams moving on to match play and an individual national champion is crowned.
Arkansas is making the program’s ninth NCAA team appearance and the Razorbacks are paced by the No. 1 collegiate player in Maria Fassi. Fassi moved into the top spot after leading Arkansas to the program’s first NCAA Regional Championship. She earned medalist honors as well winning her seventh title this year.
The Golf Channel displayed a map of the USA showing where each of the participating teams were located. The UW Huskies looked awful lonesome way up there in the Northwest corner. Go Dawgs!
