The 40th edition of this team amateur tournament runs May 9 thru 11. Korea has won 10 of the last 11, but they're in a fight after two rounds at Thana City CC in Thailand.

A translated JGA article says Korea won it for the 5th straight year, although I don't know how, since they had the same score as Thailand. I don't know if there was a tie-breaker or a playoff. Credit for Japan's improving performance is going to the methods of its national team coach, Gareth Jones of Australia, who was hired in 2015. Looks like Birdie Kim is the ROK coach https://www.instagram.com/p/BiooT3tAkXE Lowest score prize https://www.instagram.com/p/BioomR4A1Vt Becky Kay of Oz brought cuteness to Thailand...and the 20th best score https://www.instagram.com/p/Big40XcAMQc Pos Country Total Hole Today 1 Korea -15 18 -6 T1 Thailand -15 18 -6 3 Japan -14 18 -4 4 Philippines -11 18 E 5 Indonesia -4 18 -4 6 India -2 18 -6 7 Australia +2 18 -1 T7 China +2 18 +6 9 Malaysia +8 18 +2 10 Taiwan +9 18 +5 11 New Zealand +11 18 +1 12 Singapore +25 18 +9 13 Myanmar +30 18 +11 14 Hong Kong +36 18 +14 Pos Player Nat To Par Hole Today R1 R2 R3 R4 1 ATTHAYA THITIKUL THA -13 18 -5 71 65 67 203 2 YUNA NISHIMURA JPN -10 18 -2 67 69 70 206 3 YUKA SASO PHI -9 18 E 69 66 72 207 4 YUNJI JEONG KOR -7 18 -2 69 70 70 209 5 A-YEAN CHO KOR -4 18 -4 73 71 68 212 T5 DIKSHA DAGAR IND -4 18 -3 68 75 69 212 T5 AYAKA FURUE JPN -4 18 -2 72 70 70 212 8 HEEJEONG LIM KOR -3 18 E 69 72 72 213 9 HARMIE NICOLE CONSTANTINO PHI -2 18 E 72 70 72 214 T9 GRACE KIM AUS -2 18 E 69 73 72 214

Thailand is going to be a formidable UL International Crown team in 3-4 years, when Atthaya Thitikul and Patty Tavatanakit join the Jutanugarns.

I think this might be a bit of a soft year for the Korean amateurs. They just lost Hye Jin Choi, Eun Jeong Seong doesn't seem to be living up to expectations, and I don't think the new kids have stepped up to take their places just yet. The way these things go, I expect there will be another amateur star or two coming along in the next couple of years.

philknjHowever, it was a painful loss for the Kingdom’s team after a draw with 19-time champion South Korea at 417 each over the three days. The result was decided by the final scores of the teams’ third players … and Natthakritta Vongtaveelap (73) was edged out by Hee Jeong Lim (72), propelling South Korea, also including Yunji Jeong and A-Yean Cho, to their 20th title as Thailand’s hopes were shattered. www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/sports/30345189
