When the third round finally finished Sunday morning just seven contestants lost points and the Saint remained exactly the same, despite Stacy dropping out of the Table after 54 holes. Most affected was baggerbob, who also lost Yokomine to drop off the podium. Cannlinny and I led with 5 scoring selections apiece.
When the dust settled and Kris Tamulis hoisted her first ever trophy on the LPGA Tour I was left to figure out how the sums added up for all of us. First, it didn't look good for centurion, since Stacy returned to the Table but his sense of patriotism is lacking this week as he deliberately chose players other than those selected for next month's Solheim Cup. Ironically he had Austin Ernst, who wasn't selected and finished T2 with Yani Tseng, as his 2nd alternate, but she wouldn't have helped him escape the bottom half of the Standings. With just two scoring selections, one Korean and the other Paraguayan, he was the runaway recipient of this week's wooden spoon. Sometimes these kind of stunts work, as the week after the 2013 Solheim he picked the entire victorious European team and won, but more often they misfire. If there's a lesson in this we hope he'll find it.
At the other end of the Standings things tightened up considerably. Eight PakPickers gained points in Round Four, including those who finished 3rd-7th. Cannuck and the Saint joined cannlinny and I with five scoring selections apiece. The Saint snubbed Lexi and thus missed the podium. Cannlinny was alone in selecting both Austin and Yani, too much for cannuck to overcome but...
Now here is where things get complicated. Instead of Austin I had Julieta Granada (T9) but otherwise I had the same picks as cannlinny. Given the closeness of the result and the fact that the scorer is directly involved the full scorecards are dissected below in the interest of transparency:
By the smallest of margins I emerge victorious this week and become the third player to retire a virtual trophy this season. My tally book now rests for several weeks until my next turn in the rotation, the KEB/HanaBank in Korea. In a couple of weeks Elf will be back with the season's final major, the Evian. Thanks for playing!
