It's a little early to start this thread, but an issue has popped up. Chairwoman Mao is facing a possible punishment payment of ¥1,000,000 (or $7,623 USD, chump change for her) for NOT defending her title and playing the LPGA's HSBC WWC the same week. BTW, she qualified for HSBC by winning last year's JLPGA Panasonic event. The deadline for switching events this year is Feb. 10, if she chooses to do so.
For the first time since 2019, there will no upper limit on the number of spectators at this tournament.

Good news ... the AQ Stream site has added additional "BS" versions to its collection of standard Japanese channels (TBS, MBS, TV Tokyo, TV Asahi, etc.), so there will be more TV viewing options (Japan time):
TBS
March 4th (Sat) 15:00-15:54 (LIVE) March 5 (Sun) 15:30-16:54 (Recording)
March 3 (Friday) 18:30-19:30 (recording) Saturday, March 4, 19:00-20:00 (recording) March 5 (Sun) 17:30-18:54 (recording) aqstream.com/jp/tbs/BS-TBS
********
All but one spot of the 108 field is filled ... top-50 plus ties will make the cut. Hori One & Two will be there ... so will two players who have hit the skids in the last few years, Mamiko Higa and Erina Hara.

Kotone Hori had three birdies first four holes, then forgot how to play golf, had six bogeys no birdies after that.
Yuri Kawamoto had two birdies one bogey front nine. However same as last year back nine six bogeys one birdie, finished with four straight bogeys.

The BS-TBS stream worked perfectly, although I got up 15 minutes late.
POS PLAYER SCORE TODAY 1R 2R 3R 4R TOTAL 1 Ayaka Watanabe -9 -3 66 69 135 2 Haruka Morita -6 -5 71 67 138 3T Momoko Ueda -5 -4 71 68 139 3T Mone Inami -5 -6 73 66 139 3T Reika Arakawa -5 -2 69 70 139 6T Miyuu Yamashita -4 -2 70 70 140 6T Mi-Jeong Jeon -4 -3 71 69 140 8T Serena Aoki -3 -3 72 69 141 8T Lala Anai -3 -2 71 70 141 8T Kotoko Uchida -3 -3 72 69 141
The cut was exactly 50 players at +2, which brought in a surprising number of old-timers and alleged washouts ... such as ...
Erina Hara (+2) ...
... and Mamiko Higa (+1) ... pic is from Round One ....
... and Hori One (+2)
... and Ayako Uehara (+2) ... pic is from Round One.
The broadcast showed Mone Iname make an eagle-two on the par-4 17th ... I didn't know she also make an eagle-two on the par par-4 5th. Since the tour started keeping detailed records in 1990, this is only the fourth time that a player made eagles on two par-4 holes in one round.
Kokona Sakurai (MC)
Yui (MC)
The Shinster (-2) and BML (MC)

Whatever reason is causing Yui to have so many bad back nines she really need to fix it. She was four under front nine and seven over the back nine for the two rounds. Maybe Natsuka Hori should give Kotone lessons after making the cut and Kotone missing it. kidding

The Shinster scorched the backside with a 30, topped off with an eagle at #18 ... although it was shortened to 453 yards (listed at 495), she was the only player to make a three there.
POS PLAYER SCORE HOLE TODAY 1R 2R 3R 4R TOTAL 1 Jiyai Shin -9 F -7 73 69 65 207 2 Nanako Ueno -7 F -5 70 72 67 209 3 Ayaka Watanabe -6 F +3 66 69 75 210 4T Momoko Ueda -5 F 0 71 68 72 211 4T Haruka Morita -5 F +1 71 67 73 211 4T Miyuu Abe -5 F -4 73 70 68 211 4T Mone Inami -5 F 0 73 66 72 211 8T Akie Iwai -4 F -3 77 66 69 212 8T Yuri Yoshida -4 F -2 72 70 70 212 8T Lala Anai -4 F -1 71 70 71 212 8T Serena Aoki -4 F -1 72 69 71 212
Nanako Ueno and Mini Ueno ... only her looper is carrying a yardage book and she re-employed a putter from her junior days this week (27 putts on Saturday).
Okay, we get it already ...
... give it a rest, you didn't win, yet.
Back to the locker room, the socks don't match ... Nozomi Uetake (+5) and Kana Mikashima (-2)
Rotten putting by Haruka Morita on the last four holes probably doomed her chances this week.

Mi Jeong Jeon (-2) and the same-looking boat every year.

Erika Hara (-1)
Pei Ying Tsai (+4) ... someone tell her that "clunk" is never a good word.

So, what is left for The Shinster to accomplish in Japan? Well, she never won this event before ... check off that box. She'd like to get the 30-win free ticket for life ... now at 27 (does NOT include two non-member wins in Japan). And a real fluke of math, she has never won the annual money title ... for now, she's on the right track.

Nanako Ueno (right) gagged ... she was never shown on the broadcast until she had a two-foot birdie putt attempt at #18, which she missed.
Yuna Nishimura
The broadcasters were saying "birdie" and "eagle" regarding the shortened par-5 18th, but Momoko Ueda made a mess of it with a six.
Saiki Fujita
Pickachu? Super Mario? No, it's Aya Kinoshita (-1)
The Chie Pet was on-site selling ... ball markers?

Congrats to Jiyai! It is kind of surprising that she has never led the JLPGA, especially considering she HAS led the LPGA in her career. I guess her win at the Vic Open a few weeks ago gave her added confidence going into this season. Anyways, great job!
