My field rating for this event is a solid 66%, up from 62.5% last year.
My Breakdown is 63% from the LPGA Priority List and 69% from the Rolex Rankings.
This is the one tournament where the field rating is not a good indication of how strong the field really is. The reason that it is not higher is that the field is limited to just 60 players thus eliminating a good part of the LPGA Priority List.
Make no mistake about it though, this is one of the strongest fields of the year. The entire top ten from this week's Rolex Rankings will be teeing it up.
The only players that qualified for this event and will not participate are:
Jessica Korda
Inbee Park
Linn Grant
Other notes:
In the race to the CME Globe, where you have to finish in the top 100 to retain your fulltime playing privileges for 2023, the only player to enter the top 100 this week was Morgan Metraux. Morgan's 4th place finish this past weekend saved her from having to go back to the Q-Series as she jumped from 101 to 85. She did it at the expense of Su Oh who fell out of the top 100.
Other familiar names that failed to finish in the top 100 (there are too many to list them all) include:
Gerina Mendoza
Jeongeun Lee5
Amy Olson
Jennifer Song
Sun Hyung Park
Mi Hyang Lee
Brittany Lang
Mel Reid
Pernilla Lindberg
Although not yet mathematically over, it appears that Lydia Ko will win the Vare Trophy.
The Player of the Year is still up for grabs as Lydia Ko has just a one point lead over Minjee Lee. Brooke Henderson and Atthaya Thitikul still have an outside chance if they win this week.
As you all probably know, Atthaya Thitikul has already won the Rookie of the Year award. Her 15 top tens will also be the top mark as she is two ahead of Lydia Ko.
With Nelly Korda winning the Pelican Championship this past weekend, American players have now won 8 tournaments this year. The Republic of Korea is second with four. It has now been a prolonged slump for the Republic of Korea who have now gone 15 tournaments without a win. You would have to go back many many years to find where they had such a slump previously (my records don't go back that far). They have had a number of near misses this year. Don't expect that to continue much longer as there is just too much talent there. Can they finish with a big win this week?
There was plenty of movement in the Rolex Rankings this week:
Nelly Korda regained the Number one ranking moving up from 3 to 1.
Non LPGA member Min Ji Park made a big splash moving from 18-12. Mi Yu Yamashita, another non-LPGA player, jumped up from 31-24.
Gaby Lopez moved from 43-34. Haruka Kawasaki (another non-LPGA player) entered the top 50 by moving 52-46, knocking Jeongeun Lee6 out of the top 50.
Allison Corpuz made the biggest move jumping from 81-54.
Outside the top 100, Maria Fassi made a huge jump from 130-106.
Lilia Vu has now finished in the top 17 in each of her last eight tournaments.
Xiyu Lin missed the cut this past weekend stopping her streak at 30 consecutive cuts made.
