The good news is that they're returning to Columbia Edgewater CC where MHL has never trunk-slammed. So, we are to assume that the players don't have to worry about stray bullets from a neighboring homeless camp anymore ... I hope that's true.
Tournament name history from Wikipedia:
1972: Portland Ladies Classic 1973: Portland Ladies Open 1974–1975: Portland Ladies Classic 1976: Portland Classic 1977: LPGA National Team Championship 1978: Ping Classic Team Championship 1979–1982: Portland Ping Team Championship 1983–1985: Portland Ping Championship 1986–1989: Cellular One-Ping Golf Championship 1990: Ping-Cellular One Golf Championship 1991–1994: Ping-Cellular One LPGA Golf Championship 1995: Ping-AT&T Wireless Services LPGA Golf Championship 1996–2000: Safeway LPGA Golf Championship 2001–2002: Safeway Classic 2003–2008: Safeway Classic Presented by Pepsi 2009–2013: Safeway Classic Presented by Coca-Cola 2014: Portland Classic Presented by Cambia Health Solutions 2015: Cambia Portland Classic 2016–2017: Cambia Portland Classic Presented by JTBC 2018–2021: Cambia Portland Classic 2022: AmazingCre Portland Classic
This mutt of a tournament can't even fill up a field of 135 spots (so far).

Yeah, I noticed that. I also picked up on JTBC dipping its toe into the ice water in 2016 and yanking it out after 2017. Apparently, there are some LPGA events that even they can't save.

My field rating for this event is a very poor 32.5%, down from 40% last year. My breakdown is 39% from the LPGA Priority List and 26% from the Rolex Rankings. The only top ten players teeing it up are Nelly Korda and Brooke Henderson. I will not attempt to list the players skipping the event.
On to other things:
Minjee Lee missed the cut this past week stopping her streak at 21 consecutive cuts made.
Ally Ewing's win was the 6th for a player from the USA this year. The Republic of Korea is next with four.
Atthaya Thitikul's top ten finish at the Kroeger Queen City Championship was her tenth of the year, tying her with Lydia Ko for the LPGA lead. Atthaya also increased her lead over Hye-Jin Choi for Rookie of the Year 1149 to 1083.
In the all important Race to the CME Globe standings (it is imperative to finish in the top 100 to play next year): Maria Fassi wrapped up her 2023 playing privileges leaping from 96 to 67. Sarah Kemp greatly improved her chances by moving from 99 to 88. Morgan Metraux snuck into the top 100 moving from 104 to 96.
Rolex Rankings: Xiyu Lin jumped from 34 to 24. Ally Ewing from 52 to 31 Andrea Lee 87 to 76 Outside the top 100 Maria Fassi rocketed up from 175 to 125.

I'm glad you straightened me out on that ... for some reason, I was thinking top-80 ... I must have been thinking about the old method when the money list was most important. MHL is at #123 with a probable max of five U.S.-based events left to play. She is inching her way up by avoiding trunk slams, but maybe not fast enough ... I wish she would really nail one ... like THIS one against the wannabes and washouts.
*****
What's the record for biggest Rolex advance in one week? I don't know, but Haruka Kawasaki jumped 236 spots to #116. Baba the Giant is #599 on Rolex ... what happens when she wins this week?
*****
It's rough out there ... The Pink One made the cut last week and LOST 25 spots on Rolex ... now at #1247.
*****
BTW, Cyborg still leads Jeeno Jat in CME Points.

philknj The "Rookie of the Year" is a cinch for Cyborg; she needs just a T4 this week to take over the lead. Also, Mi Hyang needs only a T9 or better this week to get inside CME Top-100. What Andrea Lee and Mi Hyang proved this year is that Q-Series is totally unnecessary for LPGA players with priority status of between 101 and 125.

This is the only event anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, and I believe the longest continuous event on tour that isn't a Major. Based on the way it's treated by the LPGA, apparently Ohio deserves more events than all the states up here... I think they should make an effort to put this at a better spot on the calendar and make sure it survives. Or bite the bullet and put an event in Seattle. Or maybe both!

You should make time to hit the home field tournament of U-Wash. at Sahalee CC ... they play against the biggest programs and the best players. Oh wait, I looked up the sked ... they're not playing at home this season.
Meanwhile, I'm stuck with the Ivy League, but Princeton has a pretty good squad and I might see them later this month for the first time in four years. Also, they're competing at Baltusrol in October ... all six Ivy teams, plus Notre Dame, Clemson, Florida St, Miami, North Carolina and NC State.

In other news, it was officially announced that the Toto Japan Classic is going back to its pre-2020 status: Co-sponsored by the LPGA and JLPGA ... no word on the field makeup, but I'm guessing it will be the old split of 43 LPGAers and 35 JLPGAers. Spectators will be allowed for the first time since 2019 ... advance ticket sales start Friday.

JLPGA drives a much harder bargain than KLPGA; BMW Ladies Championship usually has fifty or more LPGA players.

So Yeon Ryu good pairing with Hye Jin Choi and Patty Tavatanakit.
Surprisingly they have a lot of good pairings for a change.

Caddie list is out ... MHL gets Perry Bishop (whoever that is) ... retread Cindy LaCrosse dug up ex-touring pro Lauren Doughtie, who I watched shoot 80-something at the Seaview a few years ago. The most interesting move: The Yangster is off again this week, but her regular bagman since the start of 2021, Jan Meierling, was loaned out to Waitwait Zhang. With six trunk slams in seven starts, Zhang had to do something ... her old loop, babyface goody-goody Yiran Meng, went over to You-Chiang Hou.

I made it to Portland safe and sound. I will be checking out the Pro-Am soon. Not a field to get too excited about. Don't expect many details from me as I am old and can type on my device with only one finger 🤘.

Shibuno Fever played nine holes with Korean actor Lee Jung-jin in the pro-am ... maybe he does acting in the Amazing Cre commercials as he is all decked out with that brand below. More on him here:
She declared that his game is pretty good ... and his bag is funky-monkey ... filled with obscure Japanese brands:
This has been reduced to $207.90 on the Tourspecgolf website ... that's for the club head ONLY.
Emillid Bahama irons ... produced at a secret foundry by Ninjas. The website has a copyright date of 2013:

I just checked the Leader Board and noticed that it's the same setup playing par fives as long par fours. Nelly Korda had birdie and Eagle on the first two. They found a way to give the longer hitters an advantage since most of them are U.S. golfers.
Last week the front par fives wasn't reachable in two, so they shorten them for the Final round. Guess why?

MHL is -1 thru 15 holes ... HOW she accomplishes this will kill me one day. But, this event is still a golden opportunity for her ... almost a FREEBIE. Korda Two and Greeny are the only two maneaters near the top of the scoreboard ... and there's only about five players in the PM wave that would scare the poop out of me. Tied for the lead is Caroline Inglis (one career top-10) ... she is so anonymous that her name was spelled INGLES on her caddie's bib at the Seaview last year.

In other news, Inky will tee it up at Aramco/New York next month ... they have 15 spots unfilled and the LPGA is off that week.
