It was early ... Hori One finished at 84. The Shinster and Kana Mikashima were DNS.

Kotone Hori got only two birdies and one bogey after the early minus three start. Still three behind and a tie for six place is great.
Yui Kawamoto had a much better first round this time. She had only one birdie but no bogeys .
Natsuka Hori had a rough, rough day at the office at plus twelve. She can just swing away the second round for practice.
It must be fun watching Professional golfers playing a worthy golf course setup. Instead of a course setup for ten handicappers.

Saturday's Serious Baller Award goes to Pei Ying Tsai, (below) gaming the "new" Akira Prototype KS-801 irons ... older pics show her playing them at last fall's JWO, which I assume is when they came out. Per Google mush, the clubhead is "8620 (soft iron)". Further research on Getty indicates she switched to Akira irons in 2019 ... played Bridgestone driver and irons before that, but I don't think she has ever had a club contract ... plays a Ping driver now. Another Taiwenese, Min Lee, had Akira irons at the 2019 Shoprite, which my notes say were Prototype KS-301 (discontinued).
I spotted Tsai with her mom absorbing the mob atmosphere near the practice greens at the 2017 Orange Julius Invitational, which she qualified for, and I hope she qualifies for Lancaster in 2024.

Kotone Hori got off to another fast start with four birdies through six holes. She just picked up another birdie on eleven, tied first place at nine under.
Yui Kawamoto got two birdies front nine to move to minus three. Then she made two bogeys on back nine to drop back near the cut line at minus one. She did make another birdie to finish minus two, which looks like it probably makes the cut.
Natsuka Hori has a lot better score so far today at minus two through eleven holes.

The cut was -1 and 53 players made it. I was pleasantly surprised that the TV Tokyo broadcast ran about ten minutes longer than scheduled.
POS PLAYER SCORE TODAY 1R 2R 3R TOTAL 1 Nozomi Uetake -10 -5 67 67 134 2 Mao Saigo -9 -6 69 66 135 3 Kotone Hori -8 -4 68 68 136 4 Kana Nagai -7 -2 67 70 137 5T Rio Ishii -6 -3 69 69 138 5T Ayaka Watanabe -6 -3 69 69 138 5T Mami Fukuda -6 -3 69 69 138 5T Pei-Ying Tsai -6 -2 68 70 138 5T Ritsuko Ryu -6 0 66 72 138 5T Yukiko Nishiki -6 +1 65 73 138
It's been a LONG time since that first win for Kana Nagai.
They showed almost nothing of Mao Saigo, but that swing of hers is really, really GOOD ... finally got her first win last week and she looks ready to make up for a LOT of lost time.
Hori Two
Erika Hara (-3) ... uhh, I'm not sure what's going on here.
Yui (-2)
Ayaka Matsumori (-4)
The short backswing of Nozomi Uetake will be tested Sunday

Kotone Hori didn't improve on her great front nine, with two birdies two bogeys back nine. Still she is only two shots out of the lead.
Natsuka Hori made a big rebound from the first round, with four birdies one bogey. That showed a lot of pride even thou she is struggling with her game.

"Xi Yu Lin is NOT leading in Thailand, so I think we stuck it to China this week."
FUDGE! I screwed up the alarm with DST on my cellphone ... or just slept through it, not sure which, so I missed it all, including a crazy finish. The leaders didn't play badly, but got bull-rushed from behind. I'll have to settle for the official JLPGA highlight reel (below) that is scheduled to run at 7 AM EST.
POS PLAYER SCORE 1R 2R 3R TOTAL PRIZE 1 Pei-Ying Tsai -13 68 70 65 203 ¥14,400,000 2T Rio Ishii -12 69 69 66 204 ¥5,360,000 2T Kotone Hori -12 68 68 68 204 ¥5,360,000 2T Mao Saigo -12 69 66 69 204 ¥5,360,000 2T Nozomi Uetake -12 67 67 70 204 ¥5,360,000 6 Kana Nagai -9 67 70 70 207 ¥3,200,000 7T Momoko Kishibe -8 71 70 67 208 ¥2,059,200 7T Min-Young Lee -8 72 69 67 208 ¥2,059,200 7T Yuna Nishimura -8 69 71 68 208 ¥2,059,200 7T Shiho Oyama -8 68 71 69 208 ¥2,059,200 7T Rumi Yoshiba -8 70 69 69 208 ¥2,059,200
First win on Japan's big tour
Min Young Lee
Queen Shiho and Rumi Yoshiba
Birdie for the tie at #18 for Mao Saigo came up short
Off the top of my head, I don't think Volvik has any wins on Japan's big tour ... Rio Ishii was one shot short.
Minami Katsu (-4)
Mone Inami (right, -4) saying to Erika Hara (-5), "I thought this was supposed to be MY tour this year."

Kotone Hori missed winning by one but another great Tournament. That different putter grip is still working for her. Thanks for the highlights.
Yui Kawamoto got stuck on minus one for each round. She made the cut and a little pocket money so okay Tournament. Now she has to keep improving every Tournament.

Was watching on GolfTV - disappointed no one could force a playoff. If Rio hadn't gone into that bunker, might have been able to get closer on 18... And what's with that crazy extension upward when Kotone Hori swings? She really stretches her arms to the sky. Love this, haha: "Mone Inami (right, -4) saying to Erika Hara (-5), "I thought this was supposed to be MY tour this year.""

She is playing great with that swing and different putter grip so go far it.

Per Google mush, she is the anti-shovel player:
Putter change from this week. Until now, it was "Truss", but since the green was fast in the practice round, I tried several with soft and hard faces, and finally it became Odyssey's "White Hot OG # 1WCS". "Basically, I'm not very good at putting, and this week's green is a little difficult to touch. If I used a soft center shaft face, I changed it because it rolled straight."
Also, AKIRA is used for irons and wedges. "I don't really like thick (irons). Thinners make it easier to stop the ball, and I use clubs that are easy to operate so that you can hit both fades and draws," he says.
