Spoilers for Team Kim/Garlic Girls/South Korea vs. the UK This was a nailbiter! The Sisters had a great chance in the 8th end, but Skip Annie aka Kim Eun Jung made a rare mental error and did not release the rock before crossing the line. But they fought back, and this happened in the next end: linkThey went on to win, and are now 1-1. Hwaiting!!!

Watching the KOR v. ROC curling match. The pre-game festivities inexplicably included a band of Chinese bagpipe players in full Scottish regalia.
Team Kim is leading in the very early going. Let's hope the drug testers don't take a month to come up with the Russian test results like they did with that 15yo figure skater
This broadcast has just one English language announcer...no color analyst.
The Garlic Girls haven't aged a day since the 2018 games. They literally look identical to 4 years ago...even the glasses and hairstyles are the same.
********
EDIT: Team Kim took the lead for good by the 3rd end and finished with a 9-5 win, and a 2-1 record for the games...currently good for solo 3rd for the competition. After the win the Korean players showed off their patriotic fingernails to the camera, ala The Pink Diva at the Solheim.
Next up for Korea: China at 1:05am on Sunday, USA at 8:05pm Sunday, and Japan at 7:05am Monday. All times ET.

SBS Sports is showing men's and women's short track ... it's not live, but I won't spoil myself. Korea's latest hero is a BTS wannabe with pink hair who blew past everyone in the last half-lap of the men's semifinal relay to pull out the win. I'm guessing this broadcast will get to the finals for men and women quite soon.

Isn't it the case that, supposedly, all curling rocks are mined from a small island off the coast of Scotland? I recall them showing that island when the LPGA plays at a course that's on the British or Scottish Open rotation... Anyways, that would explain the bagpipes...

Non-stop blubbering by Min Jeong Choi, which was on the SBS Sports video (they have broadcasters there) ... I don't think NBC showed it ... and this was for WINNING a SILVER medal in 1000m short track.

Did you see the race? I've kinda taken to rooting against the Dutch in the skating events. Choi was coming around on the inside, and Schulting held her arm out and blocked her from passing. It looked pretty shady, but there was no protest. OF COURSE the Korean fans are mad; when aren't they when their fave loses? linkIt's hard to tell if Choi is trying to pull Schulting back, or if Schulting if blocking her out. I'll side with Choi (I admit I'm biased, but that's what it looks like to me), but it's debatable for sure. SkateGate LOL

You're thinking of the Ailsa Craig, which is a wildlife sanctuary just offshore from the Turnberry resort. Given its status special permission is required to even visit the island, much less carry out quarrying operations on it, so stones used in lesser competitions tend to come from elsewhere. It certainly is true though that all the stones used in major international events come from the Ailsa Craig, which mercifully is NOT under the same ownership as Turnberry.Kevin

^^^ CASE CLOSED ^^^
Regardless of any contact, Choi had NO chance to win at the end. She was too far back and her legs were too short ... watching the end from the side, you can see Schulting's skate is WAY ahead at the finish line. Some people on YouTube said Choi pushed Shulting at the corner so she could have a chance at the end.

The google mush related to this video:
The commentary of Lee Sang-hwa relaying the speed skating athlete Min-gyu Cha's match hahahaha
Who does not love this woman after this?

SBS Sports had a replay of ROK winning its heat for the men's short track relay (and had the best time among the two heats). During the warm-up, one of the broadcasters said in English, "pink boy". Here was referring to Yoon Gy Kwak, who save the ROK bacon at the end.
Kwak carried the flag in with women's short tracker A Lang Kim

Ugh, the Garlic Girls got into a tense battle with China in their match today. China is arguably the worst team in the competition, and Korea can't afford to lose the easy ones if they want to advance.
But China hung tough after an early Korea lead, and got a 1 point lead heading into the final end. Team Kim had the hammer, but China somehow prevented them from getting more than one point. They went into a playoff, but China had the hammer and closed it out. Korea falls to 2-2. This is definitely a setback, but hopefully they can dust the US tomorrow and get back on the right track. Hwaiting!
[EDIT]: Although apparently, China beat Sweden as well, so either they are riding a homecourt advantage, or they are being underestimated.

Some people on YouTube said Choi pushed Shulting at the corner so she could have a chance at the end. I don't see anything weird happening with Choi on the turn, but I do know there is a group of Korean team haters on twitter and YouTube that seem to see everything Korea does as cheating, so I wouldn't take the mere existence of negative comments as proof of anything. I still think Shulting was trying to hold Choi off and that Choi was impeded, but it's still quite possible that Choi didn't have enough time to make up the difference regardless. I still don't like Shulting.

Tough loss, especially since KOR was leading during the 8th end. There were noticeably more cheering fans (Chinese only, of course) in the stands than there were for the match with Russia. The "world feed" announcer was terrible...he often seemed confused about what was happening. Since the next match is with USA, NBC should have their own announcer on the call, along with a color analyst...not that they'll necessarily be any better.

The NYT just did a story on the Chinese bagpipers. Apparantly there are only 12 of them in all of China. Does anyone actually enjoy bagpipe "music?" I need to train Alexa to recognize it and automatically mute my TV. Curling’s Scottish Soundtrack, Delivered by Bagpipers from Beijing www.nytimes.com/2022/02/12/sports/olympics/curling-bagpipes-china.htmlBEIJING — The curling arena darkened and strobe lights blotted the ice. A band of bagpipers marched in almost like a vision from another time, or at the very least, another continent.
The musicians are self-described amateurs mostly from Beijing. None of them have ever been to Scotland. But they were dressed as though they had just arrived from the Highlands: red plaid kilts adorned with the little pouches with long tufts of horsehair known as sporrans, all part of the uniform they had ordered from abroad.
The steady squeal of “Scotland the Brave” held its own against the din of the arena — the selection a nod, no doubt, to curling’s Scottish roots. But the anthem is also sort of a default tune for the instrument; tutorial videos on how to play it were easy to find online. And the band needed that help since their teacher, the only one they could find in China, had recently left the country.
“We just like bagpipes,” the leader of the pipers, Zhang A Li, said after one of their pregame performances — a staple of curling tournaments whether in China or Chicago, “and we all just came together.”

Does anyone actually enjoy bagpipe "music?" I need to train Alexa to recognize it and automatically mute my TV. LOL. My Dad's family ancestry is Scottish, and he was something of a Scots-phile. When I was a kid, he would take the family to the local Scottish Games every year, which consisted of traditional Scottish sporting events like 'tossing the caber', and of course lots of bagpipers. He also had around ten albums of various bagpipe groups like the Black Watch Guard and would sometimes play them for hours on end. I swear, every bagpipe tune is exactly the same: it starts with two drum rolls, then three minutes of tuneless white noise vaguely reminiscent of a dying cow. I studied for a year at Glasgow University in the 80s. I got a chance to see and hear the real deal in Edinburgh. Yeah, it's pretty much the same.

Now we know why Putin showed up ...
Here We Go Again Department: I am learning that a DQ is not automatic in this case: The IOC has called the case a “legal issue,” reportedly because Valieva is a minor and therefore a “Protected Person” under the World Anti-Doping Code. The Code allows for lesser penalties for minors who violate the code.
Karen Chen took the high road and did not call the ROC cheaters, but bluntly described the situation:
“[They] are doing things that I can only dream of doing,” American Karen Chen, who finished fourth at the 2021 World Championships, said of the Russians' ability to attempt multiple quads in a routine. “I am not capable of doing what they are doing.”
Also, what the heck is a 15-year-old doing competing? I recall that Yuna Kim was stopped from being in Torino because she was only 15 at the time. Suddenly it's OK to be underage I guess? Remember the East German swim team? It was only women that won there, not a single guy.
1.) The ISU age rule from Wikipedia:
To compete internationally on the senior level, skaters must be at least 15 before July 1 of the preceding year.
Yuna Kim DOB - 9/5/1990 Kamila Valieva DOB - 4/26/2006
2.) "Surly Shirley" had some amusing comments about her competition in 1970s in the article below:
