Ironically, Lydia pulling this reversal has seemed to increase the Twit-rage about her and others playing for the Saudis. I wonder how long it will be before it reaches a boil? Lisa Cornwall posted a scathing comment about it, though not aimed specifically at Lydia. Sura might be pretty busy making excuses before long...

Ok, you baited me ... I just HAD to look it up ... what she said:
I wish Saudi Arabia would stay the hell out of golf until it cleans up its abominable human rights record.
#sportswashing
I thought she had more brains than that. Meanwhile, every big pro golf tour has been hip-deep in CHINA for the last 20+ years ... and the GIC couldn't care less. Neither do I.

Not only does the GIC let it slide, they’ll help rehab your image when you do something way over the top.

The Saudis are wise to target the world of golf. For whatever reason the average American fan is very enthusiastic (and defensive) about Saudi involvement in golf.
I think they are gaining a foothold. There is a massive power void left by Tiger Woods and the sport is ripe for the picking. The tour is very popular currently but nobody is chasing glory or history a la Tiger; I think they are happy to follow the biggest money no matter where it comes from. Rory is the only one among the top players even attempting to entertain the concept of ethics. He can't keep it up for much longer. Sooner or later he'll issue his statement, I was wrong, too severe in my judgment or whatever, we need to grow the game, I'm just a golfer etc.

I'm interested in the possible effect embracing the Saudis might have on a players' career or a tour's bottom line. Any blowback at all on social media is a new wrinkle, and we are starting to see a little bit. The question is whether women's golf will continue to skate under the radar or will there be a reckoning? I suspect this will be something the tour will have to address at some point, but for now it looks like they might get away with it. The reason I think that is that women's golf is just not a big enough deal in the wider culture for them to get worked up about.
But stay tuned!
