According to KT, the "National Golfer" referred to in this article is her. Apparently she made some fairly innocuous comments on the support -- or lack thereof -- that golfers receive in Malaysia. National golfer under probe for inappropriate commentswww.nst.com.my/sports/golf/2021/09/728800/national-golfer-under-probe-inappropriate-commentsThe Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) are investigating a national golfer for allegedly making inappropriate comments.
The golfer, who represented Malaysia at the recent Tokyo Olympics, was alleged to have said in a video interview on Facebook that the golfer's interests were not protected in the campaign to represent the nation at the highest level of sports.
As the golfer was seen to have taken a swing at MGA, the National Sports Council (NSC) and Sports Ministry, MGA issued a statement yesterday regarding the matter.
"MGA do not condone nor take lightly when one of our athletes who was representing the nation at the Tokyo Olympics uttered such improper, inappropriate and unwarranted statements during a media session.
"The athlete has brought disrepute to the sport of golf, to the MGA, and to the nation in general. MGA will conduct an internal investigation in respect to the matter and appropriate action will be taken, if necessary," said MGA in the statement.
MGA stated that they do not share the sentiments of the golfer, and recorded their appreciation to the NSC and Sports Ministry for the support rendered.
"The assistance rendered by the above-mentioned parties included but not limited to the provision of financial grants, training facilities, coaching clinics and mentoring support.
"The grants in particular provided for the preparation of our two Tokyo-bound athletes (Gavin Green and Kelly Tan) were substantial in nature.
"However, MGA are hopeful that the quantum of such grants to be reviewed in the future to enable our athletes to have more international exposure and experience as a consequence of the uniqueness of the sport of golf itself."

She criticizes them, and instead of looking into her accusations, they attack her? Nice.

haha - my neighbour Malaysia can't get it's act together politically and in many other ways. Not sure why they're bothering to attack a golfer who really only makes them look good. Perhaps because of her ethnic Chinese background?

The "mystery" comments are on her FB page in the Sept. 1 video of almost two hours. Her negative bashing constructive criticism of the Malaysian Golf/Sports authorities is roughly between the 24 and 37-minute marks ... don't know if there is more dirt because I haven't finished the video yet.

Just watched that 13-minute chunk. She really laid out her Olympic experience in a very detailed way, with no emotional or baseless accusations. The authorities there are acting like a two-bit banana republic. Hopefully, the "investigation" and "appropriate action" will result in better national support for golf, rather than sanctions against patriotic players like Kelly. She already lives in Canada. I hear they support their players pretty well over there. If she gets kicked out Malaysia, she can become the new ECP!

Yeah, she says that they aren't fully supporting their athletes, and their response is... to prove her point. D'Oh!

Maylasia is magnificent place full of dumbasses ruling the country. They'll get their act together in 100 years. They are crybabies and should appreciate Kelly.

The Crusty Grrr story is can't-miss (57-minute thru 65-minute). Other items ... her coach "Gary" (Is that Gary Gilchrist?) charges $300-$400 per hour ... her WITB segment starts at 87-minute ... said junior golfers should not go to IMG Academy because it is more crowded and much more expensive than when she went there.

She told a shorter version of that story in one of the Malsysian golf mags right after it happened at the ANA. Who knew? Crusty is a paper tiger underneath it all. Best quote: "I didn't want to say anything, she would have killed me on the spot!" And her comments on the original Mean Girl Pink Diva..."She didn't like me at first, I guess I rubbed her the wrong way, but we're cool now."

"That's a lot of freakin' money."
So said the EMP starting at 1:26:00 of the video ... at the bottom the screen is a graphic saying 940 million Ringgits were approved for Malyashia's Youth & Sports Ministry. WTH is a Ringgit?! Courtesy of Currency XE, that's $225 million USD. I dunno, maybe her coach Gary Gilchrist wanted a Lamborghini ride to and from the golf course in Japan. As for coaching ability, it's a mixed bag ... he rode the SS Feng to the top, but did nothing for The Old Ko. I haven't kept up with his current roster of players.

The crack investigative reporter at Malaysia's Star newspaper has uncovered that "it has come to light that the player concerned is indeed Kelly Tan." No shit, Sherlock. The MGA is trying to save face in response to the social media backlash, but they're still acting like royal jerks. www.thestar.com.my/sport/golf/2021/10/03/response-to-social-media-outcryIn the wake of an outcry on social media that followed an announcement that they were investigating a national player for bringing the game into disrepute, TeeUp interviewed the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) via email and have since received a response.
In it, the national association said they wanted to straighten out a few key pointers, particularly those dealing with the financial aspect of things and what might have precipitated the saga.
It has come to light that the player concerned is in indeed Kelly Tan, who for a while now has been a columnist on the TeeUp pages.
Indeed, Kelly did, to some extent, address the matter in her column last weekend.
Following are excerpts of the MGA interview:
Q: With regards to the statement accredited to the MGA on social media, mentioning that an inquiry would be undertaken to look into the remarks from a national player, is this indeed Kelly Tan? And if so, what might these remarks have been and pertaining to what?
A: There were a few remarks made by Kelly Tan in her interview that are not accurate, such as:
1. Financial grant – RM250k was given fully to Kelly in batches in the run-up to the Olympics. A total of RM500k was given to golf as part of the financial support approved by the Government and to be shared equally by the two athletes (the other being Gavin Green). The RM250k was quite a step up compared to the previous Olympics in Rio where only RM40k was given to the golf athletes. The budgets submitted to Government in 2019 were prepared by Gavin and Kelly, but only RM500k was approved.
2. A zoom meeting was held with Kelly and her manager, Dusty (Lattery) on April 19, 2021, which was attended by MGA and Sports & Youth Ministry. Several issues pertaining to the Olympic Games were discussed, including coaches, caddies, attire, financial grants, accommodation, accreditation, traveling arrangements, vaccinations and others. A meeting was held separately with Gary Green, Gavin’s father, to facilitate his participation at the Tokyo Olympics.
3. A zoom meeting was also held by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in connection with the Olympic Games 2020 Playbook Workshop on February 24, 2021 for athletes and managers. Gavin’s parents attended the meeting, but Kelly, who was in Malaysia at that time and aware of the meeting, did not attend due to a golf game. Her manager also did not attend the meeting.
4. MGA in several team managers’ meetings received the request from both athletes for their coaches to accompany them at the Olympics. However, the OCM’s fund allocation is only for a team manager and caddies. MGA also requested for the athletes to stay near the competition venue, but this was not approved due to the strict Covid-19 restrictions protocols in Tokyo.
5. MGA’s team manager (CC Boo) was with the athletes from their arrival until the conclusion of the golf competition. Our team manager was there as a volunteer and he discharged his duties as a team manager diligently and to the best of his abilities, in spite of the Covid-19 restrictions.
Q: Further to this, there has been a huge outcry of support for Kelly on social media, including from established golfers, coaches, administrators and media representatives on the Malaysian scene, and the public in general, what is the MGA’s view of this?
A: The public only heard one side of the story and unsurprisingly supported Kelly. In future, we will strive to do better in disseminating information to the public.
Q: As a rule of thumb, what sort of penalty or sanctioning could come of this inquiry?
A: MGA is working to resolve this issue amicably. Our athletes’ well-being is our primary concern, especially when representing the nation at all golf competitions. We further acknowledge that more can be done for our athletes but funding their expectations has always posed a challenge. In this regard, we trust that the Sports Ministry will consider increasing the annual financial grants for the sport of golf. Also, for now, MGA is working to resolve this issue amicably and does not want it to get any bigger. However, we would like to advise athletes, especially golf athletes, to be more sensitive and careful in issuing statements. MGA is aware that every athlete has the right to express their concerns, but it is best for these athletes to use the right channels or come directly to MGA. This is because if the statement is misinterpreted, then it not only involves the image of MGA, but also involves the Sports Ministry and Olympic Council of Malaysia.
