So far, Korean film "Minari" is following the same awards path as "Parasite"...the darling of Sundance and garnering top award nominations from SAG and the Golden Globes.

I've been almost completely out of the loop for this year's awards; it seems weird to even have film awards in a year when movie theaters are shuttered. I just started following things with the Golden Globe noms this week.
Anyways, one of the interesting things about the SAG awards is that Korean actors Steven Yuen and Youn Yuh Jung got individual acting nominations. You'll recall that Parasite was pretty much blanked out of any acting awards despite its strength in most other categories. (The one acting award it won was the group ensemble award at the SAGs).
I notice that Minari is also being distributed by A24, the same company that handled Parasite. It would be really interesting to see if it can get any Oscar love, especially in the acting categories.

The BBC handicaps the contenders for awards season. They think Minari is a shoo-in for an Oscar Best Picture nomination. www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-55954948Film awards 2021: The 21 contenders to watch
What are its Oscar chances? A double winner at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, it's likely to be the second Korean-language film in a row to be nominated for best picture after last year's Parasite. It'll be a stretch, though, for it to also follow Parasite by winning the award.
Its best acting hopes probably lie with Youn Yuh-jung, who gives a touching turn as the family's grandmother, while her on-screen son-in-law, Steven Yeun, might make the shortlist for best actor. Director Lee Isaac Chung could also earn his first best-director nomination.

I watched it last night. It's pretty low key and subtle. Nothing at all like a Bong Joon Ho blockbuster. But then again a very different piece of work, definitely an American film. I would call it groundbreaking in its portrayal of Korean America. The acting is nice. Steven Yeun is likeable on screen but maybe a bit of a lightweight. I would've liked to see some more gravitas in that role, maybe like a Song Kang Ho vibe.

I'm always suspicious of the Oscars when it comes to nominating Asian actors (they almost never do), but there seems to be a sense that Yeun could get nominated for Best Actor and the Grandma Youn Yuh-Jung for Best Supporting Actress. I've also heard a lot of buzz for Ye Ri Han as the wife for Best Actress, although she has been largely passed by so far in most awards. Variety seems to think she has a chance.I sure hope at least one of them gets a nomination to make up for the ridiculous Parasite acting snubs last year!

The NY Times predicts a Golden Globes win for Minari this weekend, in the only category it was nominated in. www.nytimes.com/2021/02/26/movies/golden-globes-predictions.htmlBest Foreign Language Film “Another Round” “La Llorona” “The Life Ahead” “Minari” “Two of Us”
The immigrant story “Minari” couldn’t be more American, but an outdated H.F.P.A. rule shuffles it off to the foreign-film category because its characters often speak in Korean, and an even more pernicious rule decrees that those foreign films then aren’t eligible for a best-drama nomination. Knowing this, the Globes will probably reward “Minari” in an attempt to tamp down all the controversy, but the real win would be scrapping those rules altogether next time.

Sharon Choi's services were not necessary last night. www.nytimes.com/2021/02/28/movies/minari-foreign-language-film.html‘Minari’ wins best foreign-language film, but not without controversy. And because “Minari” was in the foreign-language film category, it could not contend for the either best-picture awards. (Worth noting, the film’s distributor, A24, submitted “Minari” in the foreign-language category.) The cast of “Minari” was eligible for acting nominations but did not receive any.
The classification drew accusations of racism and favoritism — Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” (2009), for example, did not meet the English language requirement either, and yet was nominated for a best-picture prize — and calls for changes to the rules.
“Maybe the positive side of all of this is that we’ve made a film that challenges some of those existing categories, and adds to the idea that an American film might look and sound very differently from what we’re used to,” Chung recently told The New York Times. “It’s hard to say, ‘I demand a seat at a table for best picture.’”

A fairly interesting article about the struggle Asian actors have in getting recognized for awardsSample: [Director Issac Lee Chung] is concerned that one actor isn’t seeing enough appreciation: Yeri Han, who plays Monica, the anxious wife of Steven Yeun’s idealistic Jacob. “In the editing room, she was the one who we were always centering our emotional story around,” Chung said of Han. “It’s her face, it’s her looks, and the way she picks at a bedspread because she’s upset. These little, subtle things that we knew: ‘This is making the film what it is.’ He paused. “And unfortunately, it’s invisible.”

On Monday they announce the nominations for the Oscars. Any guesses on what Minari might snag?
I think it will get a few nominations, probably including Best Film and Best Director. But I'm really wondering about the acting awards. I could see as many as four, but given the poor track record of the Academy when it comes to Asian actors, I'm dreading that there will be none. Even the one I think the most likely, Best Supporting Actress for Yuh Jung Youn, seems like it could be a snub. We could also see Steven Yeun for Best Actor and, less likely but still possible, Alan S Kim for Best Supporting Actor and Yeri Han for Best Actress.
Well, my fingers are crossed and I'm hoping for the best!

Not a bad haul, including Best Picture and two acting noms.
Nomadland has been gathering steam lately. I'd say that's Minari's biggest competition for Best Pic.

Yeun's nomination surprises me. Maybe I'm biased since the subject is familiar, but he was not convincing as an immigrant from Korea. Not trying to judge his acting in general; this is just not an interesting or deep role IMO.
Also, completely unrelated but I am still troubled by the actions of the grandma character and the potential repercussions of introducing non-native flora into ecosystems.
