Great weekend for Lydia Ko -9 to finish solo six place.
Kudos: To Nelly Korda for her second place finish. Yui Kawamoto needs to get out of her funk and start playing like she is capable of.

Well that was a crazy ending! Judy made the point that none of the three players that made the playoff were coming off a bad round so all three should have been feeling good about themselves. Nelly lessened her chances by not hitting the fairway with her tee shot.
I can't consider Mirim Lee an underachiever like Amy Yang. She just hadn't had the many opportunities to be in the victory circle in spite of being a four-time winner. Incredible chipping gave her win number five. Congratulations Mirim!

If the ANA isn't embarrassed now they will be if Henderson win this Tournament. I thought that there was a time limit for looking for a lost ball. Did they change that rule and make it a tarp rule. The same rule should apply if your ball goes into a tree. Even if you see it go in the tree, you still have to identify it. Otherwise under the rules, it's a lost ball. If they know it’s under a tarp I think you get all day to actually retrieve it.

Winner's presser "I definitely thought to utilize the backboard. When I had practice rounds, I practiced that shot, so it was definite for me to use the backstop there."

Rose Zhang again gets the best of Gabriele Ruffels with a birdie, birdie finish -8. Gabriela Ruffles was minus nine until bogeys on 16 and 17 dropped her to -7.
I only watched the playoff LIVE, but I'm getting caught up with the rest of the round via a rogue YouTube posting of Japan's TV Wowow broadcast. I know Ruffels made par on #18, but how did she do it? Did she get to the green in two or three shots? If it was two, was she short or long of the hole? I ask this because I just watched Rose Zhang hit her second shot at #18, which hit the center of the green and skipped into the backstop, leaving her a putt or chip down to the hole. She looked disgusted .... WRONG, girl, that's what you're supposed to do! Just slam the ball into the backstop, as there is NO risk at all in doing this ... putts it to 7 or 8 feet and makes birdie to win low am.
Which leads me to the playoff ... Lee deserved to win because her two opponents played dumb or wimpy, I don't know which. Twice, the looper of The Closet Asian says it's 135 to the end of the fairway, so why didn't she pull a club that would get there? Are there players on this tour who routinely hit 135 PW shots out of the rough? Maybe a 9-iron would have gotten her an extra ten yards. She was left with 99 yards for her third, but she had more than ten yards of short grass ahead of her. Wouldn't most pros prefer 89 yards over 99 yards?
As for the ECP, the alleged ex-pro on her bag touts a 185 shot, saying "it's gonna land just on the green." Why would you want to cut it that close? Did any players make good chip and putts from the front of that green? You've got the big blue insurance policy behind the green, just slam the ball into it. Didn't she just see Lee hit the center of the green and watch it roll off the back? Instead, the ECP hit a stinky short shot that was fortunate to stay dry.
In other news, TV Wowow had a course reporter following Shibuno. I don't what happened, but I'll have to watch. She played par golf on the front and got killed on the back. Any lack of proficiency she has in English was probably a benefit as she played with Christina Kim.

Gabriela Ruffels went for the green in two, but came up short in the water. She hit her fourth wedge shot within five or six feet and saved her par.

I scanned through some of the articles on the golf page. There were zero negative articles about the wall until after Mirim Lee won. Judy never mentioned anything negative about it until after the Tournament. She made an excuse that she held off talking about how bad it was. If anyone but Mirim had won the playoff there would still be silence from her.

I think it was rather universally derided but maybe just on twitter instead of in actual articles.

Speaking of golf twitter I noticed my man Shack pooped on this event all week, as he does, and then wrote Jessica korda instead of nelly in his write up.
And he wonders why lpga players have to pay for their own clubs.

Really enjoyed this round especially after the Sophia Popov shocker. I am impressed with all three ladies. Brooke was her usual tenacious self, all day I expected her to win. Nelly is a really good ballstriker and a future great probably. For Mirim destiny called and she was brave enough to pick up. Probably the most remarkable set of chip-in's in any LPGA round ever. And then she collected herself after what had to be a shocking finish and played an excellent playoff. I called Mirim Lee a legend before the round started; she's on a whole another level now.

Here's a surprise: Mirim Lee's coach is none other than Song Hee Kim. Long time fans will recall Kim as a big up and comer about ten years ago who, after a promising start to her LPGA career, completely disappeared. She's out of playing now, but will probably have a few calls on her voicemail from interested players looking for a new coach!

Absolutely unbelievable! LEGENDARY!
I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor. I cannot recall an ending like this in any Major ever... But it's typical for Mirim, who, as I mentioned earlier, seems able to pull unbelievable shots out of her bag just when she needs them for wins. Let's not forget she had a chip-in to save par yesterday (I think on 12). She was playing decently all day Sunday, but she was always playing catch up, and it just didn't seem like the magnitude of the moment was bothering either Henderson or Korda. Mirim made her FIRST chip-in on 6 for her second birdie of the day, but the fireworks really started on 16 when she jarred what must have been a 90-footer to move to within one of Korda. From that moment on, it felt like Korda was playing more tentatively. But when Mirim could not get up and down on 17, it looked like that was it for her. Then, a quick bounce off the Lexi Wall and a perfect chip-in for eagle (her third of the day), and just like that, for the first time in days, she was at the top of the leaderboard. It's times like this I can't stand Judy Rankin. Her blase reaction to this magic really irritated me, and she couldn't stop pointing out how, if the ball had not dropped, it would have gone twelve feet past. You just KNOW if Korda had finished this way on 16 - 18, she would have been going on and on about it. Even more amazingly, Korda could not convert on 17 or 18, so we ended up with the three-way playoff. Mirim didn't need the wall this time (are the cynics noting that?), was the closest to the flag, and put her chip to five feet, drilling the birdie for the biggest win of her life. The jump into the pond was not going to win her any style points, although I do think I heard her say 'SH*T!' very loudly just before going in. See, she spoke English just fine! Other than Mirim, it was a weak effort by the Sisters. Credit to In Gee for a final round 69 to notch 18th. Sei Young and Mi Hyang both doubled en route to fall out of the top ten. Inbee and Sung Hyun did not have good weeks. Nice weekend by Amy Yang to get her own top 20. The wall was stupid, the course was set up way too easy for a Major and way too much to benefit the bombers, why did Henderson not get assessed a lost ball?, and there is more you can say. But forget all about that, because we just witnessed one of the most amazing displays of guts, skill and miraculous luck in Major history. Remember, Birdie Kim only holed out ONCE in her Open win; here we saw THREE of them. If Mirim never again has this chance, she at least made the most of it when it counted. MIRIM LEE FIGHTING!!!

Oh, shut up, Judy:
Yes, they would find a way: they would never try to reach the green in two. If that's what you want, remove the wall/grandstand, which is there every year.
